Dear Friends:
I wrote last week about Communication. This big issue is a challenge in any church
community. It will take every member of St. Mark’s to be involved in communication –
we need to read what others write, talk with one another in person, deeply listen to
one another, read Face Book and other communications platforms if possible, and in
all things, talk in love, honesty, and truth with one another.
The next step in becoming better communicators will lie with our Vestry. Remember
that almost every Vestry meeting is open to visitors. The Vestry meets on the second
Tuesday of every month beginning at 6:45pm. If you want to come and observe and
listen for the whole meeting or just part of a meeting, you are welcome. The Vestry is
hard at work with many things. They are working on next steps after the Holy Cow
survey meeting at the same time that they continue the work that they have
committed to by their election to be spiritual leaders at St. Mark’s, to manage the
financial aspects of the community, and to build in areas of formation, parish life,
buildings and grounds, pastoral care, etc. One of their goals is to be transparent in
their work. They are beginning to write job descriptions for their own roles and invite
more people to be on their committees. The overall goal is for every Vestry position to
come complete with a notebook full of a job description, committee notes, pertinent
information, pictures, a calendar, goals and expectations. When a new Vestry member
is elected at the Annual Parish meeting (now scheduled for May 7, 2017), he or she
will be mentored by veteran Vestry members and presented with the notebook for
Page 2
their area. We will have a parish finance meeting on January 22, 2017, and the
Annual Parish Meeting has been moved to the spring to allow for better transition for
everyone. Instead of a new vestry member coming in the middle of a program year,
they will be able to have the summer to go on retreat and begin to learn about their
commitment and do goal setting for the program year ahead.
Beginning next week, and twice a month, a Vestry person will be writing this “Dear
Friends” letter to you all. Sally Little, who oversees pastoral care, will write the first
letter. They will be telling you about their role, their committees, inviting you to be a
part of the work we do here, describing goals and projects, hopes and passions, and
all in all, doing more to keep everyone informed of what is happening at St. Mark’s
and how everyone can be involved. Furthermore, starting this coming Sunday, the
written reports that every Vestry member does before every Vestry meeting will be
available for you to read. They are already pinned, along with the approved Vestry
Minutes, to a bulletin board in the gathering and office space in the Parish House, but
now you will be able to pick them up in the Narthex, and soon we hope to have the
reports linked to our website. The Vestry heard, loud and clear, in discussions in the
past few weeks, “We want to know what is going on!” This is our church, together:
the congregation, the Vestry, the staff. We will move forward together, and
Communication is key to a productive and healthy conversation.
These are our Vestry members and their areas of responsibility:
Cindy Michaels – Senior Warden and Mission
Beth Bennett – Junior Warden and Parish Life
Chris Stearns – Stewardship
Jaime Beckler – Children and Youth Formation
Sally Little – Pastoral Care
Mike Andersen – Buildings and Grounds

Jim Halverson – Finance

Seek them out, ask questions, give ideas, come and be a part of the work that they do.
Every person is needed, every voice important.

ST. MARK’S PRESCHOOL
On Wednesday, Sept. 7 , the 3 and 4 year old class traveled to the church sacristy for
Blessing of the Backpacks. The children were mesmerized at the scenery and listened
attentively to Rev. Beth. It was a wonderful experience for all.
A big thank you to Brian Beckler and Becklers Carpet for the donation of new rugs for
the classroom.

THIS SUNDAY
In our worship services today we are focusing in our prayers and sermon on giving thanks for
the long history of Recovery Groups at St. Mark’s. Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and
Overeaters Anonymous have been our neighbors in the St. Mark’s Parish Hall and other
rooms for many years. The almost-daily meetings held here have blessed St. Mark’s over the
years, creating sacred space with the yearning and hopes of people seeking recovery, even
when we don’t even know the exact nature of the thousands of stories that have been told
here. We will continue this focus with today’s Announcing God’s Good Work Luncheon
following the 10:30 service.

FIRST AMONG EQUALS
A 20 minute gathering that will cover a huge array of topics. This week’s topic will be
intentional discipleship.
EPISCOPAL 101
Today we will talk about “Our Episcopal Identity.” In the recent discussions generated by the
Holy Cow survey, some folks have said that one of the things they love about St. Mark’s is
that this is the place for the “Episcopal identity” in our community. We are the only Episcopal
Church in three counties. What does this phrase mean? Does it matter to you that you attend
an Episcopal Church specifically? What do people seek when they come into a faith
community? All are invited to attend this forum. Questions and comments are welcomed.

OUTREACH AND NEIGHBORING
JOIN US THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, please join us for worship and potluck lunch following the service. Reverend
Beth and the Outreach Committee have put together a day designed to give us more insight
and understanding into 12 Step recovery groups. Whether alcoholism or another form of
addiction, there is a spiritual component necessary to achieve long-term recovery. Much of
that work is achieved in group meetings and work with others who have years of recovery.
Sunday we will celebrate our efforts in outreach over the years and that of the 12 Step groups
that call St. Mark’s home. Current 12 Step groups meeting at St. Mark’s are AA, Al-Anon,
and Overeaters Anonymous.
