Hillcrest High School Hamilton, New Zealand International Student
There were a huge range of performances, from traditional musical instruments, traditional and modern dance, singing and the Grand Finale, the Cultural Captains leading the audience in the New Zealand National Anthem. Hillcrest High School Hamilton, New Zealand International Student Newsletter August 2014 Congratulations to the many students who took part in the International Concert in Term Two. The Food Stalls were very popular before the show and our Cultural Captains kept the Concert flowing. Some of our International and ESOL students also enjoyed the Mystery Creek Agricultural Fieldays, a very popular national agricultural event. Fieldays is known as the biggest agricultural trade show in the southern hemisphere. Students were able to see animal displays, heavy machinery in action and sample the many food stalls. We were very proud of our Korean Fan Dance group who represented Hillcrest High School at St Paul’s Collegiate, another school in Hamilton. We also visted a UNESCO World Heritage Garden in Suzhou with Wei Wang. Visit to China, Vietnam and Thailand During the Term Two holidays the Principal Mr Whiting, Mrs Whiting and the International Dirctor Raelyne Selby visited Shanghai, China, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Bangkok, Thailand. We were very fortunate to meet up with the parents of some of our students and very appreciative of their kindness and hospitality. It was also very pleasing to meet alumni from the University of Waikato such as Felix Fang, shown below with Pei Jin. This was our first major visit to China, Vietnam and Thailand and was an opportunity to become more familiar with the wonderful culture and the different environment of many of our students. We also enjoyed the opportunity of meeting Education Recruitment Agents in each city and hope to make contact with more Agents in the future. The Shanghai skyline is very different to Hamilton! In Ho Chi Minh City we met Tony Martin, the New Zealand Trade Commissioner and Consul General. We were also delighted to meet Selia and her family. Selia will be joining us next year in Year 11 . Teosakul. All three students are attending University in Bangkok although Mae is currently studying in the Netherlands for three months. Our visit was a good opportunately to meet with family and friends of students Opera House in HoChi Minh City In Bangkok we gave a presentation to parents interested in sending their sons or daughters to Hamilton in the future. We appreciated the assistance given to us by Ray Subhabhundu in organizing the guests and the venue for the presentation. We also met up with Palm Siritip, a past Cultual Captain at Hillcrest High School. Palm, pictured above with his mother Ray, is currently studying for three months in Norway. Kelley Jin and Teresa Dong recently represented the school at a meeting of the Hamilton Branch of the NZ Chinese Friendship Society. We were very fortunate to have the assistance of past Hillcrest High School pupils Mae Teosakul and Phum Siritip (pictured above) along with Min With the start of Term Three we welcomed new students from China, Germany, Thailand and Chile. We hope they will enjoy their experiences in New Zealand and have a rewarding and successful time at Hillcrest High School. Stephen has joined the Table Tennis team and is currently playing after school three times a week. We are always pleased to see ex-pupils visiting Hillcrest High School. Recently visitors were Kyung Min Kim (above) and Justine Cheang (below with International and ESOL staff) Joining a team or interest group is a great way of meeting other students and getting involved in the school and local community.
