Baluyut CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday’s launching of the National Year of Rice 2013 in Central Luzon disclosed that one of the factors for the country to achieve rice selfsufficiency this year is for Filipinos “to eat more vegetable, less rice.” Region 3 is rich in vegetable production wherein its products are being exported to Metro Manila. “Vegetables can be filler so our consumption on rice would be lessen. In the Asian region, Philippines has the lowest intake of veggies with 190 kilos per capita per year compared to other neighboring countries,” DA Regional Director Andrew Villacorta said. Recommended intake of vegetables and fruits per day is 400 grams. One serving requires one cup raw leafy vegetables or approximately 25 grams; ½ cup raw non-leafy veggies (40 grams), and VEGGIES Page 9 4Ps won’t be used in politics--DSWD CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 3 (DSWD-3) assured the public that their Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) or most commonly known as the Conditional Cash Transfer program won’t be used for political campaigning this election period. DSWD Regional Director Adelina Apostol said that the program is catered primarily to the indigents in able to help them uplift their living condition. “Only the DSWD can delist a beneficiary from the program if our agency has tracked that she is already well-off,” she said. “No politician or any government official can delist any donee from Pantawid Pamilya, only DSWD has that power considering it’s a national government project,” Apostol explained. Among the participating public schools, Francisco G. Nepomuceno Memorial High School (FGNMHS) was conferred as the most outstanding school for 2012 after showing exemplary performance in fostering vegetable gardening. EPZA Elementary School (EES) and Angeles City National High School (ACNHS) ranked second and third respectively. “Gulayaan sa Paaralan” (vegetable gardening in the school) was launched last year by the City Agriculture Office (CAO) in cooperation with the Division of City Schools, encouraging all public schools to plant agricultural crops within their area as one way of addressing the problem with hunger and malnutrition. The program aims to encourage public schools to utilize vacant areas in their schools for planting of various crops and to raise the public’s awareness on the nutritional value of vegetables to child’s development and learning process. As counterpart to the project, CAO provided each school with vegetable seedlings during the duration of the program implementation. Schools were tasked to plant vegetables in vacant lots to have an alternative source of food for the school’s feeding program. For his part, Pamintuan expressed elation over the overwhelming response of the participating schools to the city’s greening advocacy. “Since the start of our administration, we have been staunchly advocating for a cleaner and greener city; this urban greening program which has started in schools is just a first step to make Angeles the most environmentally friendly city in the country,” Pamintuan said. He also acknowledged this project as an effort to fight hunger and malnutrition, ensuring that “in five to ten years, no Angeleño in the city will ever be hungry.” Erlinda Cangco, this city’s Agriculture Officer, explained that the program design of this UNA senate bet opens seniors’ building in Minalin By Froilan E. Magtoto MINALIN, Pampanga--Mayor Arturo “Katoy” Naguit and senatorial candidate Nancy Binay on Saturday led local officials here in the inauguration ceremony of the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) building of the town. Aside from Binay and Naguit the ceremony was also attended by the senior citizen, led by their president Sotero Fabian, Mayor Jerry Pelayo of Candaba, Mayor Peter Flores of Masantol and local residents here. The OSCA building was donated by Vice President Jejomar Binay in the amount of P500,000. Binay did not make it to the affair due to prior commitments in Manila, it was learned. He was however represented by his daughter, Nancy. The younger Binay said the vice president has promised to visit the town in the near future. Nancy also said, “my father‘s heart is with you as he promised to bring medical equipment to Minalin to benefit poor townsfolks.” In San Simon town, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) candidate also led the groundbreaking ceremony of a covered court in Barangay San Jose with Mayor Leonora Wong. ● project centers on the planting of different fruit-bearing trees, and leafy vegetables in cooperation with the Task Force: 1 Million Trees. “We would want to extend our deepest thanks to Mayor EdPam for supporting and allowing us to pursue the program,” Cangco said. Celina Vega, principal of FGNMHS, expressed optimism towards the city government’s greening initiative. “Gulayan sa Paaralan is a great opportunity for us to continue and promote agricultural practices in our school,” said Vega. To date, FGNMHS has been active in implementing their “Luntiang Paaralan” program aiming to preserve and uphold ecological sustainability through which every student is encouraged to take part. The school established its own Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and vermi-composting section which generates additional income for the school. The school also led the use of “receptacle planting” which utilizes plastic bottles as pots; gulayan Page 9 HAU to honor former La Salle administrator ANGELES CITY--The University of Holy Angel (HAU) will confer the Order of St. Michael the Archangel for outstanding contribution to lay catholic education to Chancellor Emeritus of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Dr. Carmelita Quebengco on March 8. The order of St. Michael the Archangel is given annually to laypersons who have played a significant role in Catholic evangelization through education. It was instituted by the HAU two years ago. In a statement read during the launching of the National Year of Rice and the National Commitment ceremonies held at the DA regional office here, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said that in 2011 the country’s rice production is 16.68 million metric tons and it went up to 18.03 million metric tons in 2012. Alcala’s message was read by Regional executive director Andrew Villacorta. Alcala said in his message, the 8% increase is the highest ever achieved in the country’s history of rice production. “The reason why we have good harvest is because we have more harvested areas because of good irrigation, quality seeds, mechanization, procurement of equipment and other interven- tions in our Food Staples Sufficiency Program,” Alcala said. In Central Luzon, Villacorta said, the DA is “more successful because we are more open in our communication to other sectors especially to the farmers. Our programs were more timely and applicable. And because we became closer to the farmers, the cooperation in our programs were easy to implement,” Villacorta said. Early planting season were observed to avoid destructive typhoons, he explained. During the ceremony a logo depicting the success in achieving self sufficiency in rice production was also unveiled and the “Panatang Makapalay (Pledge of Rice)” was recited by the DA employees. President Benigno Simeon Aquino III proclaimed the 2013 as the national Year of Rice with the theme “Sapat Na Bigas, Kaya ng Pinas” through Proclamation No. 494. ●--Froilan Magtoto FIRST BITE. Enrique “Tet” Garcia hit political rivals on what he tagged as black propaganda against him in connection with reports that he is not physically fit to function as governor of the province. In a released statement, the governor said “no amount of black propaganda will ever stop him from giv- ing excellent service to the people of Bataan.” The last term governor is running for congressman of the Second District, a post he already held in the past. “My political rivals are engaging in black propaganda,” the governor was quoted saying in the recent signing of the agreement between the Bataan provincial government and Aeta communities here. He said his opponents are busy engaging in dirty tricks while they in the provincial government are not wasting a single minute to serve the people of Bataan. “It is not yet campaign season. Let’s continue working. We have many things to finish for our people,” the governor was quoted saying. The Garcias have been staunch supporters of the Aquino administration. ● CA junks Kalikasan plea vs. RP Energy FLIGHT SCHEDULE Clark International Airport MONDAY OPERATOR AIR ASIA PQ7456 JIN AIR LJ003/LJ004 SEAIR DG 7933 SEAIR DG 7213 CEBU PACIFIC 5J371 AIR ASIA PQ7491 SEAIR DG 7792 CEBU PACIFIC 5J150 AIRPHIL 2P 769 AIR ASIA PQ7305 DRAGONAIR KA 375/KA 376 CEBU PACIFIC 5J149/5J537 AIR ASIA PQ7306/ PQ7357 AIR ASIA PQ7492/ PQ7023 AIRPHIL 2P 770 SEAIR DG 7793/DG 7402 AIR ASIA AK1502 / AK1503 AIR ASIA PQ7358 / PQ7455 AIRPHIL 2P779 SEAIR DG 7403/ DG 7212 AIR ASIA PQ7024 / PQ7005 CEBU PACIFIC 5J608/5J370 SEAIR DG7932 CEBU PACIFIC 5J538/5J609 AIRPHIL 2P780 AIR ASIA PQ7006 ZESTAIR Z2 969 / Z2 968 CEBU PACIFIC 5J371 ASIANA OZ707/OZ708 AIR ASIA JIN AIR SEAIR SEAIR AIR ASIA CEBU PACIFIC AIR ASIA SEAIR SEAIR DRAGONAIR AIRPHIL CEBU PACIFIC AIR ASIA SEAIR AIR ASIA SEAIR AIR ASIA AIR ASIA AIR ASIA SEAIR AIRPHIL SEAIR CEBU PACIFIC SEAIR DG7213 AIR ASIA ZESTAIR ASIANA FLIGHT NO. 180 180 150 150 150 180 150 150 180 180 168 150 180 180 180 150 180 180 180 150 180 150 150 150 180 180 180 150 177 0040H * 0050H 0140H 0050H * 0110H * 0120H * * 0610H * 0630H * 0705H * 0705H * 0720H 1010H 1105H 1135H 1210H 1140H 1205H 1340H 1405H 1355H * 1400H 1440H 1545H 1600H 1620H 1645H * 1800H 1740H 1835H 1810H 1850H 1820H 1900H * 2030H 1955H 2045H 2230H * 2305H * 2305H 0010H 2330H * 2345H 0050H ROUTE TYPE OF A/C SITING CAPACITY ETA ETD PQ 7456 KUL-CRK A-320 LJ003/LJ004 ICN-CRK-ICN B-737-800 DG 7933 HKG-CRK A-319 DG 7213 BKK-CRK A319 PQ7491 CRK-SIN A-320 5J150 CRK-HKG A319 PQ7305 CRK-HKG A-320 DG 7924 CRK-HKG A319 DG 7792 CRK-SIN A319 KA375/KA376 HKG-CRK-HKG A320 2P775 CRK-PPS A-320 5J149/5J537 HKG-CRK-SIN A319 PQ7306 HKG-CRK A-320 DG 7925/DG7312 HKG-CRK-BKI A319 PQ7492/ PQ7001 SIN-CRK-KLO A-320 DG 7793/ DG7212 SIN-CRK-BKK A319 AK1502 / AK1503 BKI-CRK-BKI A-320 PQ7455 CRK-KUL A-320 PQ7002 / PQ7298 KLO-CRK-HKG A-320 DG 7313 BKI-CRK A-319 2P776/2P737 PPS-CRK-SIN A-320 DG 7932 CRK-HKG A319 5J538/5J941 SIN-CRK-BKK A319 BKK-CRK A-319 150 PQ7299 HKG-CRK A-320 Z2 969 / Z2 968 ICN-CRK-ICN A-320 OZ707/OZ708 ICN-CRK-ICN A-321 FLIGHT NO. Mayor Jesse Concepcion said economic activities in this industrial town had improved since the inception of the FAB three years ago. The mayor said proof of the improved economic activity brought by the Freeport was that stall holders at the Mariveles public market are now able to pay their stall rentals promptly, unlike before when payments were delayed for months due to slow business. Local officials credit the FAB’s success to Gov. Enrique Garcia Jr. and his son Bataan Second District Rep. Albert Garcia who are continuously inviting investors to generate employment for residents. The court, however, said that the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) in 2008, 2010, and 2011 that was issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were invalid. The ruling also invalidated the lease and development agreement signed in 2010 by the coal plant proponent, Redondo Peninsula Energy (RP Energy), with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). In the decision, the Court denied the petition on the grounds that the petitioners failed to prove that their right to a balanced and healthful ecology was violated or threatened with violation and that any damage would affect the lives of locals in two or more cities or provinces. The court said that “petitioners failed to prove their allegations that the construction and operation of RP Energy’s power plant using the CFB [circulating fluidized bed] technology will cause environmental damage of such magnitude as will adversely affect the residents of the provinces of Bataan and Zambales.” The dismissal of the environment case removes one of the two remaining humps for Meralco-led company to construct the US1.28-billion, 600-MW power plant project. Records showed that there are actually 71 approved enterprises inside the Freeport but the 20 firms are just to start operation. Many fresh graduates of Bataan’s educational institutions, like Bataan Peninsula State University, are employed in well-paying jobs inside the FAB, the statement said. Congressman Garcia authored the bill converting the then deteriorating BEZ into FAB. Investors are entitled to tax holidays and can buy land and other property for expansion and tourism-related ventures under FAB’s charter. ● --Butch Gunio Orani mayor’s inaction on piggery complaint ORANI, Bataan---Residents slammed Orani Mayor Benjie Serrano for alleged inaction on their complaint against a piggery emitting obnoxious odor and being hazardous to their health. The annoyed complaining residents of Northville Subdivision trooped to the piggery in Barangay Tugatog last week to dramatize their protest and show disgust over the mayor’s failure to act on their complaint. Local media men were invited to cover the protest. Here many of our politicians would do anything and everything to win in the election even if they are not the people’s real choice. There are politicians who would use guns, gold and goons to gain advantage during the campaign, actual polling and even in the counting. Others would resort to violence to advance their self-vested interest. Others, however, are still kind enough to just focus on black propaganda. But this does not mean they are actually doing us a huge favor. Many elections have passed in the country since time immemorial but the trend of elections being “dirty” did not change. There was no change in our political landscape except that it has become “modern” with technology. Mudslinging is not only experienced on stage. Various media, like the Internet and telecommunications, are now used to spread lies against rival camps. Social networking sites are a trend to discredit an opponent before thousands, or millions, of netizens. The reach of mudslinging has become wider and more “viral.” Though smear campaigns are more acceptable than outright violence, this should also be worth being checked to ensure that we all have a peaceful election. Sometimes, a fist fight starts with a mere word war. When ill things are said against a person, he sometimes forgets civility and turns to his more aggressive self to deal with a threat to his reputation. Then, the real problem begins. (045) 435-0938 Iron-clad fist at CDC Words are abuzz that the newly-installed president and Chief Executive Officer of the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) is drastically imposing his management style in the state-owned firm. According to some reports, Arthur Tugade, who has been appointed by President Aquino to lead CDC, has been introducing changes in the way the firm is run but using a technique that is receiving more flak than praises. Tugade, a logistics industry executive, wants to dramatically” improve the services of the CDC” starting with its people. However, there are already many incidents when Tugade’s kind of leadership is taken with contempt. A story goes that Tugade ordered the CDC people--from the top officials to the rank-and-file employees--to keep smiling especially when they are approached by their clients. There was nothing wrong with that. There was nothing wrong, too, when he discouraged the CDC workers from accepting gifts, even if it were voluntarily given especially by people transacting business with the firm. Even dinners with clients do not sit well with the new president. There was, definitely, nothing wrong either when he asked the employees to be punctual in reporting for work. He was just encouraging the state workers to do what their duties call for. I would like to believe that Tugade means well with the way he enforces proper government employees’ decorum. What he wants them to do, anyway, are inherent in the sworn obligation of each state worker. What we are not in favor, however, is with how he wants to overturn a culture he met in practically overnight. His iron-clad management style that he used to propel his family business with he wants to replicate at CDC. During his first week, Tugade reportedly blurted cuss words against an employee who only Ambet Lacanlale missed to answer a telephone in just two rings and another who was not wearing a company ID. While he is encouraging the employees to stay in the office longer than the designated workhours, he allegedly orders that air-conditioning units be switched-off after office hours. Several officers are reportedly tendering their resignations because they could no longer stand the “heat” radiating from the new chief. Even oldtimers who had been with CDC since its birth are reportedly planning to opt for early retirement. In our recent meet-up with Tugade, he was pretty determined to “correct” all the wrongs that he perceives are saddling the CDC. The “Tuwid an Daan”, no doubt, is the same road that Tugade wants the employees to tread on. He thinks he could change the culture of corruption, if any, immediately as he would in their family business. Like the birds, people come yearly to witness the festival aimed at promoting the town of Candaba. *** Candaba is known for its migratory birds, delicacies such as salted duck eggs, balut, buro (fermented fish in rice). It is also famous for its fishponds producing tilapias, hitos and other fish varieties. It is also the home of the sweet melon and the wild duck or itik. *** For years now, the festival has drawn tourists from all over the country who witnessed the town’s approach on development that is focused on agricultural productivity with environmental responsibility. Meanwhile, members of wildlife, bird-watching and photography societies regularly visit the Candaba swamp where more than 60 species of migratory birds from China and Siberia flock and seek refuge in this marshy area of town. *** The fact foreign birds visit and briefly stay in Candaba means that the town has a balanced eco-system that is conducive for birds which, in their migration, travel thousands of miles away to the Philippines as they let winter and cold season in their home countries pass. *** The Ibon-Ebon Festival, one of the major programs of Mayor Jerry Pelayo, has put Candaba town in the map of the Philippines and of the world, too. The once sleepy town is now at the brink of being one of the major tourist destinations in the Central Luzon region as the festival attracts local and foreign tourists yearly. Children from public schools actively participate in the street dance showcase that attracts tourist with the vibrant display of costumes and synchronized dance steps. *** Last Saturday, I was there to witness the mass demonstration of the different “bird tribes” of Candaba and joined the parade after. A provisional government was established in his place, ending 267 years of Manchu rule in China and 2,000 years of imperial rule. The former emperor, only six years old, was allowed to keep up his residence in Beijing’s Forbidden City, and he took the name of Henry Pu Yi. Pu Yi was enthroned as emperor in 1908 after his uncle, the Kuang-hsu emperor, died. He reigned under a regency and underwent training to prepare him for his coming rule. However, in October 1911, his dynasty fell to Sun Yat-sen’s revolution, and four months later he abdicated. The new Chinese government granted him a large government pension and permitted him to live in the imperial palace until 1924, when he was forced into exile. After 1925, he lived in Japanese-occupied Tianjin, and in 1932 Japan created the puppet state of Manchukuo in Manchuria under his rule. In 1934, Henry Pu Yi was enthroned as K’ang Te, emperor of Manchukuo. Despite guerrilla resistance against his puppet regime, he held the emperor’s title until 1945, when he was captured by Soviet troops. In 1946, Pu Yi testified before the Tokyo war crimes tribunal that he had been an unwilling tool of the Japanese and not, as they claimed, an instrument of Manchurian self-determination. Manchuria and the Rehe province were returned to China, and in 1950 Pu Yi was handed over to the Chinese communists. He was imprisoned at Shenyang until 1959, when Chinese leader Mao Zedong granted him amnesty. After his release, he worked in a mechanical repair shop in Peking. 6 Headline Gitnang Luzon FEBRUARY 12, 2013 TEAM AGYU TAMU. SORAI is owned by Ronald Christian Arrozal Infante, the eldest son of Flor Arrozal, who owns The Coffee Academy which is located right beside the sweet shop. According to Arrozal, Ron’s love for baking pastries paved the way for SORAI’s opening. Arrozal said it was Ron who designed the store, painting it with pastel colors and making the am- bience look relaxing. Ron said with SORAI “life is made even sweeter” as they offer different kinds of desserts and also steaks, pasta and salad which are not available at the Coffee Acad. Most of the cakes and pastries being sold at the SORAI were personally baked by Ron using Belgian Choco. SORAI also offers cakes and pastries being sold at five star hotels. Ron is 19 and currently a Business Management student at the Angeles University Foundation (AUF). The opening of SORAI coincides with the 5th anniversary of the Coffee Acad. SORAI also accepts birthday and different kinds of party packages for function activities. ● Subic cargo cost cheaper than Manila By Butch Gunio OLONGAPO CITY--The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) belittled reports that claim shipping costs will rise if the government diverts cargo traffic from Manila to Subic Bay. “Figures say otherwise,” Garcia said in an interview, stressing that their services are as competitive as Manila. Last week, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said that the government will encourage cargo shippers to use Subic Bay and Batangas ports in an effort to decongest Metro Manila. According to a recent study, the utilization rate of Subic Bay and Batangas are 5% and 4% respectively. SBMA has been aggressively promoting its cargo and container port as a Central and Northern Luzon alternative to the ports in Manila. “We have set out rates and incentives to be more competitive than Manila,” the Freeport chief explained. But Christian Gonzalez, general manager of MICT and regional head of ICTSI, told reporters last week that the move will “make trade more costly.” The suggestion (of using Subic and Batangas) goes against market dynamics, he claimed and “the way to keep costs down in this port environment is to let the consumers decide.” But SBMA insists that the plan will be market friendly. “(Our new rates are meant) to attract shippers to use Subic,” Garcia stressed. Even as ICTSI opposes the plan, it controls Subic’s containerized cargo, operating all of Subic’s three gantry cranes. Gonzalez said that there is no need to divert some of the traffic from Manila to Batangas and Subic because the economy is growing faster than their container traffic. Instead of diverting traffic, the government should create a proper road master plan for cargo to ensure that all ports are functioning properly, Gonzalez added. ● GUGU DIKE REPAIR from Page 1 SWEET SPOT. The DPWH said that of the total amount, P29.20 million is intended for the closure of the breached section and repair of slip sections while the remaining P34 million will be used for the construction of the 20-meter pilot relief channel from Gugu Creek extending towards Labuan Channel and outfall including the outlet of San Francisco River. The DPWH executives said they have an on-going rehabilitation efforts jointly undertaken by the department and the LGUs. They said that the excavation of the pilot relief channel from Gugu Creek towards Labuan Channel is being undertaken to redirect the flow away from the breached sections of the tail dike. They hauled excavation spoils and dumped it to fill depressed section and heighten the existing adjoining dikes. While waiting for the release of calamity funds, the DPWH has mobilized fleet of equipment using meagre and available resources, such as 3 units of bulldozers; 3 units backhoe; 1 unit barge from DPWH; 1 unit backhoe on barge from the provincial government; 4 unit backhoe on barge from the local government of Minalin. They have also undertaken bamboo cribbing with net along the bent section of the riverbank to prevent bank collapse and sand bagging of breached sections for temporary closure. They have also briefed the governor on the proposed widening of the pilot channel to about 60 meters to be considered for funding under the P5-billion priority flood control projects drawn from the Flood Control Master Plan Roadmap approved by the National Economic Development Administration. ● DSWD from Page 1 As of February data, the regional director said that about 240,000 of the 286,000 target beneficiaries will benefit from the said program in Central Luzon. For this year, “Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program is three times bigger compared to the previous year, focusing on sustainable livelihood with the theme ‘Gathering with partners’,” she added. We wanted to collaborate with our partners making the relationship of the different sectors stronger so that our beneficiaries, the poorest of the poor will see the development in their living condition, she concluded. ● Headline Gitnang Luzon FEBRUARY 12, 2013 SHOWBIZ 7 Lovi Poe suwerte sa career; malas sa pag-ibig Central Buzz Noel Montes Sa edad na 24--yes, Lovi Poe has just turned this age, noong February 11--marami raw blessings na dapat ipagpasalamat ang anak ni FPJ. “I have so much to be thankful for,” sabi niya. “Since I joined showbiz in 2006 after my dad passed, blessing after blessing ang dumating sa’kin. Hindi ako nawawalan ng projects at nanalo na ako ng acting awards both in the best actress and supporting categories. Naka-gold record din ako sa debut album ko. Last year, I did several films like ‘Guniguni,’ ‘Tiktik,’ ‘Thy Womb’ with Nora Aunor and ‘Shake Rattle 14.’ Now, patapos ko na ang first movie ko for this year, ‘The Bride & the Lover.’ And I have a hit soap on GMA7, ‘Yesterday’s Bride.’ I really can’t complain.” She’s lucky in her career, but how about her lovelife? “Ay, hindi ko na iniisip ‘yun. It’s not a priority. That can wait. Samantalahin muna ang magagandang opportunities na dumarating sa’kin.” Her gift to herself is a new house. “Patapos na ang finishing and I might transfer to it soon.” LOVI POE Sir Chief nabawasan ang sex life dahil sa sobrang trabaho Off and on cam, ang lakas talaga ng dating ni Richard “Sir Chief” Yap sa mga kababaihan. Sa thanksgiving and advance Chinese New Year niya for the entertainment press last Thursday, halos lahat yata ng female reporters na naroroon ay kinikilig sa kanya. And one good thing about him, ina-acknowledge niya at pinagpapasalamat ang lahat ng tulong na naibigay ng entertainment press sa kanya. Kaya nga raw naisip niya na magdaos ng thanksgiving presscon para pasalamatan ang press people who from the start ay nagsusulat na raw ng mga positibo tungkol sa kanya. “I know that I haven’t been able to meet you personally pero nababasa ko ’yung mga nasusulat n’yo. Kung wala ako nu’ng newspaper sometimes, pino-forward sa akin ng fans. So, salamat po talaga for being supportive and for all the good writeups,” sabi niya. “Siguro, if there was that feeling that you’re falling in love with, why not? If she was also single and I’m still single. I think anything is possible, yes.” Ang gusto raw niya kay Jodi ay ang pagiging funny nito. “She has a sense of humor also,” sabi ng aktor. Sobrang pinag-usapan ang first hug scene nila ni Jodi sa BCWMH kaya naman natanong si Sir Chief kung may kissing scene bang makikita in the future. “Iyon ang dapat nilang abangan. Hindi pa (nakukunan). I think it would be a tender shot, hindi naman puwede kaagad tor- RICHARD YAP rid sa amin. It would be in a tender way, I think. And maybe it could be an accident. I don’t know. It depends on the director. Tingnan natin kung paano niya gagawin,” say niya. When asked kung sinu-sino pang aktres ang gusto niyang makatrabaho, he mentioned three names -- Anne Curtis, Dawn Zulueta and Vilma Santos. “Kasi hindi na rin ako nakakapasok sa work, and I felt that it was unfair also to them. And for them naman, mahirap din to maintain me na hindi naman ako pumapasok.” Working with partners in an open, honest environment can only bring good fortune to you. This is a time when you, your friends and loved ones will experience tremendous, yet positive life changes. This time of year may be your favorite time and you are helpful to others because of your insight and wisdom. Financial transactions or investments are favored now. Escape the rigors of the daily grind with a good fantasy or romance novel later today. This evening is a good time to just rest and reflect. CANCER (JUN 22- JUL 22) It is a favorable aspect for financial dealings all day long. Your mind is clear and alert and anyone should understand just what you mean. Professional matters take your full concentration all morning-in the afternoon, you may feel a bit tired of all the work issues. You tend to enjoy friendly conversations with co-workers during the working hours . . . try to save conversations for break times. After work you can enjoy the appreciation you have of art, nature and music--perhaps through a shopping mall. Life may seem richer, more satisfying and more fun--you feel a special bond with your friends and loved ones. Go out on a date with your special someone or invite friends over for the evening. You will make them all feel good! LEO (JUL 23 - AUG. 23) You have the motivation to tackle any problem or project that you want to work on today. However, being told to do something just now, may not sit very well with you. You may have some serious or contemplative moments; however, you will tackle most any situation quite well--just take a deep breath and move forward. You find yourself in a very practical mood and working with, instead of against, yourself this afternoon. You have good discipline and you are pleased with the results of your efforts. Any excuse for a get-together with friends later today will be welcome. You feel especially close to your loved ones and your desire to nurture and protect them is strong. Tonight, you may enjoy reminiscing over a few old family pictures. LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 23) You may feel there is something missing from your professional life these days--regardless of how well you have been progressing. It may be time to reassess the balance between your professional and personal goals and the progress you are making with each one. This must be the balance that is right for you--there are no correct answers--but neither side should monopolize your life at the expense of the other. Be attentive to your own work today--there is a tendency to gloss over anything that needs special attention. This may include your own personal business dealings or purchases that may cause you to go in debt. You should work hard to make time for your family today. You will particularly enjoy the interactions with loved ones this evening. SCORPIO (OCT. 24- NOV. 21) Teaching, public speaking and writing can be enjoyed throughout the rest of this month. Communication comes easily. You make all details clear. No one should misunderstand anything you say. There may also be an opportunity to catch-up on paying bills, cleaning up paperwork, writing letters and perhaps, making phone calls. Your phone will probably be ringing anyway. There is an air of seriousness to all your dealings with partners. Also, you are concerned about the future of business and romantic associates. You may experience many situations when a new relationship begins, particularly one of a physical, loving nature. Additionally, this is a time when your powers of creativity are great. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21) Whatever feelings underscore your life will be felt strongly now. If you are going through a particularly trying time, this period could produce low energy levels. If this is the case, take it easy for a while-otherwise, you should have a burst of energy that will keep you going all month! Technologies that change the way people live--not just one person, but many--are soon to be a major new focus in your life. This could involve testing new inventions or putting the final change on some new communication systems. Finding better ways to be creative without creating any negative results is a plus as far as you are concerned. Today you may discover ways to help others see some of the nonsensical destructions we humans do to the environment. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN 19) You are supersensitive today and this can be rewarding or damaging, depending on how you handle it. If you focus on others, your understanding will enable you to fit into any group. This ability is helpful in any job. If, however, you are caught up in your own feelings, you are likely to see only what you want to see. In any event, save the decisions that require clear logic for another day. Emotional problems at home may seriously interfere with your career. Concentrate on the job at hand first! You show a great deal of interest in all family matters this evening, particularly about the general living environment. Further, you may wish to strengthen ties with your parents. A healing comes with a new understanding. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18) Self-discipline and a sense of self-worth become important issues. A fear of asserting yourself can hold you back--as can coming on too strong. The trick is learning to make the most of your personal talents and abilities, working within your limitations instead of feeling hemmed in by them. This should be a very successful day. You feel good about your friends, your love relationship or about finding a new love relationship. The only things you do not feel good about are perhaps the work and self-discipline you must maintain. If you channel your energy well, you may decide that work and self-discipline have a place in your life. Only complain three times and then . . . no more. Tonight is a great time to get to know someone better. PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20) This is a great day to get things accomplished. Powerful energies spill into your life, in unpredictable ways. The decisions and actions that you take now will have long lasting effects. State your agenda logically and even those who may disagree will respect you. It is best to keep this interest in check today and avoid entering into any business transaction or relationship heedlessly just now. There is time for imagination and creativity when it comes to ideas and thinking. Strong-minded people are attracted to you and you to them. You enjoy the opportunity to stretch your thinking abilities. You may want to break that routine and try something new or different this evening. Weather permitting, get outside for a while this afternoon. It is like a police car trying to stop a getaway vehicle by slamming against it head on. The car could be stopped, yes, but either or both of the parties could be hurt or killed in the process. Nothing will be lost if Tugade tried to win the hearts of his subordinates first by going slowly on them, then easily veering them away from their improper practices. This is like the same police car running along with the runaway vehicle and slowly ditching it until it stopped. It’s less risky, but as effective nonetheless.• BALITANG TODA MAX from Page 4 roon ng “construction boom” sa Metro Manila na halos sabay-sabay na itinatayo ang mga hotel at condominium. You can just call me an animator. But not an artist,” he even stressed. Kong Jess understands art as a means to communicate in a more subtle and more indirect method through the use of a conventional method like painting and sculpture. His plan is to start doing 3-dimensional works/sculptures. He believes that he can only be called an artist if he will render these orthodox method where he was originally trained. Animation in the US is the same industry as its film industry. According to Kong Jess, the competition is very tight as the market is technology-driven, convincing the motion pictures company to look for fresh ideas coming from younger generations who can cope with the demands and technicality of the new softwares. Every now and then, softwares are being invented to make the work flow efficient, leaving behind what was used before, therefore giving opportunity to those who are up-to-date and consistent with the abrupt changes. For Kong Jess, his main competitor are the new ones since he can no longer have the knack to compete in the battleground of computer-technical skills. “There’s no assurance that I will last longer than I expect here in my job as animator. I am all prepared if ever that time comes,” said Kong Jess when asked about his contract with 20th Century Fox Studios. We ended our day at Angie Hizon’s house after the family served us a luscious dinner and a good conversation. It was past midnight when we drove back to Lubao. As I was reminding Kong Jess about our meet-up with the other artists for the coming weeks, he mentioned that he wanted to teach the new generations of children in Pampanga, who have artistic endeavors, for free. He remembers that when he was still a kid, he never had a drawing paper to put what he has in mind and never had a teacher to teach the rudiments of art. He only had to collect used cigarette foils so he can practice drawing. This is Kong Jess’ last word to me before I left: “I want to give back the things that had been given to me to poor kids who wish to become artists someday. I know how hard it is to grow in an environment that lacks everything. But this is the way I can help them. Bart Simpson, a kid that I animated, is a typical American kid who has almost everything. But the kids in my plan are noBart Simpsons. I cannot give them an animated life full of wealth and unlimited resources. What I can give to them is teach them how to animate their dreams and make them come true.” ● VOLUME I • NO. 108 • FEBRUARY 12, 2013 • TUESDAY It was the 2nd day of May 2012 when I received a text from an unregistered international number saying this: “Ruston, datang kung May 3, 11am ku kuldas eruplanu. Mikit kata karas ku Lubao (Ruston, I will be arriving in May 3 there in the Philippines at 11a.m. Let’s meet when I get to Lubao).” n a g n a p m a p a K e h T : a l y c o a ñ g a e p l s s E i s h d Jes n a r e n n i w d r a w A y Emm There was a sense of urgency in the request—from a person who wishes a company the soonest he arrives in his hometown. I was actually expecting the message. And it will be an honor to be given the trust and be the first in mind by an individual who gained worldwide success and one of the most important persons in the animation industry--Mr. Jess Española. Kong Jess, as he preferred to be called, spent almost 20 years of his life in California. He is a native of Baluyut, Lubao and is the assistant director of the hit primetime cartoon T.V. series “The Simpsons.” Only a few Filipinos knew that he is the First Filipino/Kapampangan Emmy Award winner. On the day of his arrival, as the scorching heat of the sun panned across the Kapampangan landscapes, I drove to the address Kong Jess specified; passed through narrow streets of Concepcion roofed by the embracing leaves of mahogany trees where the newly-grown pale seemingly swayed to the path where I was heading. It is with this kind of atmosphere that I began to rationalize and think of the factors of Kong Jess’ early beginnings. I arrived at his house almost an hour after I left Betis. The house is a typical house that doesn’t flaunt wealth. Although “The Simpsons” cartoon propelled Española to fame. concrete, some parts of it are still unfinished. But the unfinished house is fulfilled and embellished by the warm welcoming of the relatives and neighbors of Kong Jess who came towards me one at a time, shaking my hand. Kong Jess was very proud in introducing his Ima to me--greater than the EMMY Trophy which was at that time placed on the one corner of the terrace. I was given by Inang Minda, the name of his Ima, an iced tea served in a used Chiz Whiz bottle, impeding my thirst and smiling at me in gestures that bid acceptance. I just found a traditional courteous family in the “small” house of a Hollywood “giant”. It’s a wonder on how a native Filipino who grew up as a poor boy in a secluded area of this upper end of Pampanga beyond the confines of modern technology made it big in Hollywood--something any person in the four corners of the globe can only dream about. “My mother is a labandera. She tried so hard to meet both ends of our daily living. I remember growing up skipping meals everyday because there was nothing to eat on the dining table,” Kong Jess recalled. Jess Española started out in the animation industry after he graduated top of his class in the UP College of Fine Arts where he majored in Painting. His first gig was in Fil-Cartoons, a subsidiary of Hanna Barbera in Pasig where he served as lead animator and supervisor. His exceptional talent was immediately noticed by the company, giving him the opportunity to work in Los Angeles. Jess Española and his family has since moved to the States in 1994 where he was given a resident visa. “Pa gas ke ing saken mu ne. Balu ku mal ing gas keni. Sana tanggapan me (I’ll load your car a gas. I know how expensive gas here in the Philippines. I hope you will accept my gratitude).” This is what Kong Jess, a socially-aware individual, said to me while we left their house and drove him to San Fernando. My intention for the drive was actually a joy-ride of conversation. We were immediately invited by the Hizon’s of Pampanga the soonest they knew that he’s already in Pampanga. In fact, the Hizon’s are only one of the many Kapampangans who wish to meet the legendary Kong Jess. Early months of this year, I already have contacts from several artists and politicians in Pampanga who wish to meet Kong Jess in person. And I wasted no time to get the Emmy Awardee to people who wanted to see him who relatively makes every Kapampangan proud to become a Kapampangan. A conversation with Kong Jess revealed so much about his struggles, conflicting issues in life, the dilemma of being a Filipino and a Kapampangan, the discrimination, the triumph and success of breaking and making it to HOLLYWOOD, the prestigious AWARD, the reason why he doesn’t call himself an artist despite his cosmic success and the condition of being all too human. As we passed the whole stretch of Golangco and tiptoed the heavy traffic along Lazatin Boulevard in San Fernando, the human Kong Jess, who already had a friendly conversation with Jennifer Love Hewitt on a dinner party, a sharing of jokes with Macgyver’s Richard Dean Anderson or even a red carpet march along with top Hollywood actors and actresses, revealed himself as a typical unassuming person; that he is just an ordinary Kapampangan who is craving to eat tocino after all.
