group of bikers, who spearheaded their second 50-kilometer bike caravan par-

cyclists all over the province.
Mike Carlos, one of the organizers of Friends of Delta,
said Pineda, at his young age,
has been promoting sports
like biking and basketball
and has supported players
who are known in the basketball arena today.
“We can see that Delta’s
plans and programs will be
beneficial to Kapampangans
and the youth athletes,” Carlos added.
Pineda himself joined the
group during their caravan,
as he believes that promotion
of sports in the province will
be an effective tool for devel-
opment and peace.

Group opposes JBL privatization

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO-A group of farmers has expressed opposition to the proposed privatization of a regional
hospital here.
Farmers from the Anakpawis Party-list in Central Luzon have opposed the move to
privatize the Jose B. Lingad
Memorial Regional Hospital
(JBLMRH).
Joseph Canlas, regional coordinator of the farmer’s partylist, said JBLMRH is among the
26 public hospitals in the coun-
try targeted to be “corporatized”
through the Public-Private
Partnership (PPP) program of
the Aquino administration.
The privatization of regional
hospitals is being pushed in the
Congress under House Bill 6069
or “An Act Creating National
Government Hospital Corporations.” The bill was filed by Bacolod City Representative Anthony Rolando Golez, Jr., also
chairman of the house committee on health.
“If you are to look at these
hospitals, these are where we,
poor people, run into in times of
emergencies as we do not have
the budget for private hospitals.
If these were privatized, it is the
same as the government saying
to us ‘let poor people die,’” Canlas said.
“The people of Central Luzon should strongly oppose this
plan to privatize JBLMRH, as it
puts us all in grave risk. We call
on all sectors to act against the
plan and demand for improved
health service,” he added.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO --The Department of Tourism (DOT)
regional office here sees a
steady tourism growth in
Central Luzon this year.
DOT regional director Ronaldo Tiotuico said
they expect tourist arrivals
to continuously increase as
marked with the good performance in the first three
months of the year.
“The first three months
of the year showed a good
start in the local tourism
industry and we expect a
steady increase to continue
throughout the year for both
local and foreign tourists,”
Tiotuico said.
DOT data showed that
local and foreign tourists
that visited the region in
January reached to 71,131.
In February and March,
tourist arrivals were registered at 61,215 and 65,325,
respectively.
With this summer season, the DOT official said
more tourists are visiting
the region’s top destinations.

OFW dependents urged to avail OWWA scholarship

of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW)
in Central Luzon to avail of their
scholarships.
“We are accepting applications
under our Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP).
The scholarship shall be in the form of
financial assistance worth P60,000
per school year to be paid directly
to the school as tuition fees,” said
OWWA Regional Director Socorro
Castro.
“The grant is open to all children
of active OWWA members or siblings
of unmarried ones aged 21 years old
and below who belong to the upper 20
percent of the graduating high school
class as certified by the
principal,” Castro added.

Angara urges DFA to augment
Saudi staff for stranded OFWs
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO-Team Pnoy senatorial candidate
Edgardo “Sonny” Angara today
urged the Department of Foreign
Affairs (DFA) to deploy additional
staff to the Philippine Consulate
General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
to facilitate the documentation
and swift repatriation of Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs) who have
indicated their intention to come
home.
Angara said the number of
stranded Filipinos encamped beside the Philippine Consulate building in Jeddah has surged to more
than 3,000 based on reports from
Saudi Arabia.
The DFA sent Jesus Yabes of
the Office of Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs and Assistant
Secretary for the Office of Middle
East and African Affairs Petronila
Garcia to Saudi Arabia last week to
help address the problems of OFWs.
“The OFWs should be repatriated immediately before the expiration of the three month reprieve
granted by the Saudi government
to undocumented foreign nationals
including Filipinos,” Angara said.
Last week, the embassy provided a air-conditioned temporary
shelter for the stranded OFWs
congesting in the tent city beside
the consulate but only less than 20
women with their children opted to
transfer there.
Diplomatic officials have also
appealed to the stranded OFWs
for understanding and cooperation
with embassy personnel so they can
facilitate their repatriation which
will take time due to the exit clearance requirement.
“I understand that before the
OFWs can be repatriated, they
should first secure an exit permit
from the Saudi government while
those considered overstaying will
have to pay fines before they are
allowed to leave the Kingdom,” Angara said.
Embassy personnel are faced
with the challenge of securing a
“no objection certificate” from the
employers of Filipino workers who
ran away from their sponsors. The
certificate is necessary to be able to
secure an exit permit.
Aside from the OFWs who have
desired to be repatriated, the embassy is also assisting thousand
others with expired iqama (residence permit) .
Earlier, the DFA requested the
Saudi Foreign Ministry to waive
the iqama fees for OFWs to legalize
their stay in Saudi Arabia. ●

City bares infrastructure projects

ANGELES CITY--The
City Engineering Office
(CEO) has disclosed all
completed and ongoing
infrastructure projects
and developments in the
city during the flag raising rites at the city hall
on Monday.
In a report given by
CEO Head Engineer Don
Dizon, the city was able
to deliver projects that
have benefited the 33 barangays and thousands
of Angeleños in just one
year.
According to the CEO
report, over 10 kilometers of road construction
which include concreting and asphalting were
completed around the
city.
The construction and
repair of major drainages in Villa Teresa Subdivision in Barangay Sto.
Rosario with estimated
total length of 4.9 kilometers were also accomplished.
Rip-rapping
projects were also made in
barangays Sapang Bato
and Sapa Libutad and
areas near Abacan river
and Sapang Balen creek
with estimated length of
2.1 km.
The engineering office also mentioned the
improvements
made
at the Pampang Public
Market and Ospital Ning
Angeles (ONA), as well
as the completion of the
city’s legislative build-
ing.
Out of the city’s 33
villages, 11 barangay
halls were constructed
and renovated and five
more are expected to be
finished this year.
In line with this,
ground breaking ceremonies are continuously
being held this month
with Barangays Cutud
and Anunas conducted
last week and Lourdes
Sur and San Nicolas to
be held this week.
Dizon
also
announced the ongoing
priority project which is
the expansion of ONA
for its coronary care and
cancer treatment center.
Meanwhile, the City
College of Angeles main
campus in Barangay
Pampang is expected to
be operational in time
with the opening of
classes this June.
Dizon finally noted
the ongoing P30 million projects of the city
for the remaining, road
and drainage constructions plus multi-purpose buildings in several barangays.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said that the
city is doing everything
to give to all the citizens
of Angeles what is due
to them.
“We have a contract
with the Angeleños and
we will deliver to them
concrete results and
outputs. This is where

has been accused of slapping a councilor during a
wedding reception they
both attended over the
weekend.
Police authorities in
the town, however, are
puzzled over the conflicting versions of report
involving
Mayor Jose
Francis Stevens “Boyito”
Dizon and Felix Diosdado
Lumang, a candidate for
councilor, in the alleged
brawl.
Dizon went to the police station around 3:10
p.m. and reported the incident first to authorities.
Dizon told police that
he was in a wedding reception at the Gallardo’s
residence in Barangay
Cawayang Bugtong of the
same town at about 2:30
p.m., when a companion
told him that he heard
Lumang saying, “Sasampalin ko ng pera ang mayor na ‘yan (I will slap that
mayor with money).”
Dizon was one the
sponsors in the wedding.
According to Dizon in
his report to the police, he
immediately confronted
Lumang when he learned
about the latter’s remarks
and a heated argument
ensued.
But cooler heads prevailed and the two politicians were pacified.
Police said that after
the incident, they were
able to talk to Lumang
who was quoted saying:
“Hayaan na natin yan. Di
naman ako pumapatol sa
bata.”
But around 7:15 p.m.,
Lumang’s wife, Rebecca,
went to the police station
to report the incident.
According to her version of the incident, she
and her husband were
also invited at the wedding reception.
Rebecca said the mayor slapped her husband
while saying, “Namumuro
ka na sa akin (You are
starting to irritate me).”
“One of the mayor’s
companion then punched
and kicked my husband
causing him to fall down
on the ground,” Rebecca
also said.

While the Philippine Constitution is enumerating many reasons to disqualify a candidate in an
election, it does not say anything about being a
member of a “political dynasty” as among these.
This was one of the assertions of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division in
junking the petition to disqualify several candidates in various positions in the May 13 elections,
including Pampanga vice gubernatorial candidate Dennis “Delta” Pineda.
The petitioners said the candidacy of the respondents are “clear cases of political dynasties”
in the country and, thus, they should not be allowed to participate as candidates for any elective
positions.
But, the Comelec candidly told the petitioners
that there are no enabling laws that would help the
poll body to resolve cases of “political dynasty.”
Even the Constitution, the penultimate law of the
land, is silent on the issue. It did not clearly listed
“political dynasty” however it is being defined as
among the bases for disqualification.
“Political dynasty” is a complex subject matter that requires extensive studies and debates.
There should be, first, clear delineating line that
would determine which falls under political dynasty and what does not.
Mere perception that one is tantamount to
political dynasty will not suffice to deny one the
freedom to participate in an election. Nobody can
stop a qualified and free individual from filing his
certificate of candidacy without infringing on the
inherent right of that person to run for any position
for which minimum qualifications he already met.
But, provided that we have a law that prohibits
political dynasty, wouldn’t that deprive the citizens
of capable and willing public servants regardless
if they are members of one family?
Sometimes, the passion to serve the people is
passed on from one family member to another. It
just so happened that many of our former leaders did not have immediate relatives to pass the
baton of service to and only after many decades
does one rise from the family to continue the legacy of their forebears.
Is it a fault then for those who have family members who have come to embrace the culture of
service they grew up with? At the end of the day,
family members or not, the people still have the
power to choose their leaders. Who needs a law
against political dynasty, then?

It was indeed a meaningful Saturday.
Amidst the summer heat, together with my
batch mates in elementary, we spent the day
with passion and enthusiasm. It was a much
awaited get together of SVES Batch 85. After multiple meetings and planning we finally
made it.
Our apprehensions were totally obliterated.
We never expected it to be successful since our
communication was only by text messages and
minimal personal invitations. It was an event
full of nostalgic memories and fun. Seeing my
batch mates again after 28 years made me realize how time flies rapidly.
The only problem I have encountered was
I could not recall their faces and names anymore. Some remained in my memory, others
were strangers. I kept asking one of my batch
mates who was who. Gladly, everyone was very
accommodating when I humbly asked them
their names. Funny thing was, as I was talking
to one of them, I kept on seeing his face during
our elementary years. I could still vividly recall
how he used to be the class wallflower. He never
talked much. He rarely opened his mouth and
was forced to stand in one corner as a punishment for not making his assignments.
To my surprise, he gamely participated in
commentary
all our discussions and activities. Change is really inevitable. Reunions are tools of rekindling
our childhood mnemonics. They could also be
a source of information with regards to one’s
personal life. News of success stories from our
batch mates make us feel elated and proud. Yet,
the fangs of jealousy instil a mark in our hearts
and minds when we compare what we achieved
in our lives to theirs. Some batch mates are
trapped in a burdensome situation wherein the
lack of financial capacity hinders them to pursue their hopes and dreams thus affecting their
outlook in life.
We could not help but to feel melancholic
upon learning some of our batch mates’ departure in our physical world. Reunions are basically entertaining. Our laughter describes the
good old days.
What we had last Saturday was extra ordinary. Aside from the merry making and the
lively discussions, we extended some assistance to our destitute batch mates. What I have
seen in their faces was priceless. Gratitude was
magnified by their overwhelming sense of euphoria. Enlightened by their presence, I could
not wait for another year just to see them again
and have a tete-a-tete with my old friends and
classmates. ●
Social blackout
ded, not saying a single thing until we
left the clinic. I was then scheduled for
a major operation. I always asked my
mom if it’s going to hurt, and of course
she’d always say no. That was my way
of keeping myself calm from anxiety. I
had to always know that it was never
going to hurt.
Weeks passed and the operation
has finally come. The nurse had instructed me to bathe in Betadine, gargle with the prescribed mouthwash,
and strictly stressed that I couldn’t eat
and drink anymore after 10 o’clock. I
obeyed the nurse’s order and after doing all what I had to do, I lied on the
bed but could barely sleep.
When I opened my eyes, the nurse
has entered and confirmed if the operation was going to be executed and
when we reckoned, minutes later,
I had to be transferred in another
bed and was brought to the operating room. The room was packed and
was very busy. All I remember was
they noticed my shoulders which were
shaking conspicuously, they asked if I
was cold, I shook my head, but they got
me a blanket anyway. That was when I
felt so sleepy in an instant. I fluttered
my eyes very slowly, got blurry, and I
was knocked out.
I woke up and I found myself confined in a white room, I tried shifting
my position on a certain angle, but I
realized I couldn’t move my right leg. I
carefully looked from right to left, because the back of my head was aching
and it was very hard to turn it. I felt
the dryness in my throat, so I had to
swallow. I was surprised by an agonizing sensation just when I did the latter. I tried to cease myself from doing
it because it causes me pain and it was
very irritating, but I couldn’t help it.
Such hardships have I ever experienced in the hospital. Being injected a couple of times, the chills, the
nebulizer, the pain from the removal
of tubes, and the meds that I’m very
much obliged to take daily. I very
much despise being confined in a hospital.
But little did I know, that there
were things that are about to change
after a social blackout. I didn’t keep
my peers posted on about how was the
surgery done and it was finally over. I
just told them before that I was bound
on having an operation before, and I
didn’t text them till then. I just didn’t
want them to visit me in the hospital,
because I thought of them frowning at
me, and I’d find that as if it’s an indication of pity, and I didn’t want that. I
never wanted to be pitied.
I spent my recovery process in
the province, and weeks passed, as I
started to feel better, there wasn’t even
a single text coming from a friend asking if I’m okay. Like, if I told them I
was dying, would they even show me
more concern?
Oh, how I wished it couldn’t have
had happened to me. At first I was
at pain physically, and eventually I
started to feel mentally hurt as well..
because, I felt like, I was never such
an important person to my so-called
friends. ●

Wouldn’t have they ever thought
of me as though I was someone who
once made an impact in their lives?
This was the question I asked myself
when I unexpectedly found myself
spending the most-seemingly long
days in the hospital.
I had a cyst in my left mandibular
body, and the doctor said its growth
was very rapid so it had to be removed
immediately. I wasn’t really feeling
nervous at all, back when I’ve only
been undergoing certain tests for
blood and stuff. I thought it was just
something more of like having a tooth
extraction. That’s until when they told
me that my jaw was so sensitive that
even when I’ve just tripped and it hit
on the floor, it could be broken.
Basically because the cyst itself
was literally eating my jaw, henceforth, it’s not just going to be as simple
as if you pulled a plant from its pot.
I learned that the procedure was
very complex as I never thought it
was, they said they were going to collect some skin to cover the ruined
parts of my neck, remove the smaller
bone of my leg with some muscles on
it, and once it had been obtained, it
will very soon be molded and will later on serve as a replacement of my old
fragile jaw. After hearing such a procedure, I nearly stumbled and asked
the lord why it had to be me, or, have I
ever done something quite unfathomable to deserve this?
Moments after that, I got back to
my senses when the doctor kept on
insisting it has to be done. I just nod-

Adolf Hitler commits suicide
April 30, 1945
On this day in 1945, holed up in a bunker under his headquarters in
Berlin, Adolf Hitler commits suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule
and shooting himself in the head. Soon after, Germany unconditionally
surrendered to the Allied forces, ending Hitler’s dreams of a “1,000year” Reich.
Since at least 1943, it was becoming increasingly clear that Germany
would fold under the pressure of the Allied forces. In February of that
year, the German 6th Army, lured deep into the Soviet Union, was annihilated at the Battle of Stalingrad, and German hopes for a sustained
offensive on both fronts evaporated. Then, in June 1944, the Western
Allied armies landed at Normandy, France, and began systematically to
push the Germans back toward Berlin. By July 1944, several German
military commanders acknowledged their imminent defeat and plotted
to remove Hitler from power so as to negotiate a more favorable peace.
Their attempts to assassinate Hitler failed, however, and in his reprisals,
Hitler executed over 4,000 fellow countrymen.
In January 1945, facing a siege of Berlin by the Soviets, Hitler withdrew
to his bunker to live out his final days. Located 55 feet under the chancellery, the shelter contained 18 rooms and was fully self-sufficient, with
its own water and electrical supply. Though he was growing increasingly mad, Hitler continued to give orders and meet with such close
subordinates as Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler and Josef
Goebbels. He also married his long-time mistress Eva Braun just two
days before his suicide.
In his last will and testament, Hitler appointed Admiral Karl Donitz as
head of state and Goebbels as chancellor. He then retired to his private
quarters with Braun, where he and Braun poisoned themselves and
their dogs, before Hitler then also shot himself with his service pistol.
Hitler and Braun’s bodies were hastily cremated in the chancellery
garden, as Soviet forces closed in on the building. When the Soviets
reached the chancellery, they removed Hitler’s ashes, continually
changing their location so as to prevent Hitler devotees from creating
a memorial at his final resting place. Only eight days later, on May 8,
1945, the German forces issued an unconditional surrender, leaving
Germany to be carved up by the four Allied powers.--HISTORY

through the assistance of the Provincial
Manpower Training Center (PMTC).
After the training and orientation,
participants who want to engage in livelihood projects are given start-up capital through Negosyo King Panyulung
Program of the Provincial Cooperative
and Development Office (PCEDO).
“Gov. Pineda is very determined in
addressing the problem of unemployment in the province. She mobilized
all departments assigned in public employments to assist the Kapampangans

Record from PESO shows that
under Pineda administration’s public
employment programs 14,156 cabalen
were locally employed while 2,929 were
given overseas employment contracts.
Thirty-one jobs fair were conducted in the province benefitting 14,392
jobseekers from different municipalities and cities. There are also career
counseling, facilitated in 67 schools that
helped 12,697 students in choosing college courses that meet the manpower
demands globally.
Vergara also noted the establishment of Barangay PESO coordinators
that serve as arms of the provincial government to saturate every Kapampangan who look job opportunities down to
the grassroots level.
She added, one of the notable programs of the province in employment
is the creation of the Pampanga Skills
Registry System (PSRS), which is first
in Central Luzon.
“This new program gives a clear view
of the manpower supply and demand in
the province making it easy to match the
requirement of locators vis-à-vis with the
qualification of workers and job seekers
in the province,” she explained.
Pampanga PESO has been a competitive service employment provider
for domestic and manpower needs as
well as for overseas placement of contract workers in the province making it
hall fame or Best PESO in the regional
and national levels for three consecutive years. ●

ng ABS-CBN ng solo presscon si Shaina Magdayao
para sa kanyang
pagpasok sa seryeng Juan dela Cruz
na pinagbibidahan
ni Coco Martin. Sa
panayam sa kanya
ng entertainment
press, mukha namang masaya ang
young actress at
mukhang
nakamove-on na talaga
sa breakup nila ni John
Lloyd Cruz.
Siyempre, natanong sa
kanya ang tungkol sa pagkaka-link nila ngayon ni
Piolo Pascual at pareho naman sila ng sagot ng aktor
nang makausap din namin
recently na magkaibigan
lang daw sila.
Ayon kay Shaina ay
matagal na silang magkaibigan ni Piolo. Nagkatrabaho
raw kasi sila before pa sa
Lobo at sa Alyanna. Gumawa rin sila ng Maalaala Mo
Kaya episode.
Say pa ng dalaga,
bagama’t wala raw siyang
boyfriend ngayon, hindi naman daw siya nagmamadali

Ako’y Iiwan Mo ay ngayon lang siya ulit mapapanood sa isang serye.
Medyo nakaapekto rin
kasi sa kanya ang breakup
nila ni Lloydie that time.

Popoy Caritativo.. She is now managed by
Tony Tuviera’s Triple A (All Access to Artists) and she’ll be their biggest star.
Would this mean na kahit paano,
gaganda na ang image ni Marian Rivera
knowing kung paano naging pangit ang
dating nito sa press people.
May pagka-grouchy na parang maldita si Marian sa mahabang panahong nasa
poder siya ng manager na di marunong
makisama sa press.
“Yes, I’m no longer with Popoy,” pagmamalaki pa ni Marian. “Hindi po ito biglaang decision. Matagal ko itong pinagisipan at iniyakan. Iisa lang po ang sinabi
ni Popoy: He will respect kung anuman
ang decision ko. Tumatanaw pa rin po
ako ng utang na loob sa kanya at magkaibigan pa rin kami.”
Pera ba ang dahilan?
“Basta pagdating sa pera o kontrata,
ayokong pag-usapan ‘yan. Magiging unfair din for him kasi wala siya rito. Sabihin na lang nating hindi na productive
ang relationship namin as manager and
talent. Basta nais ko lang maging mas
malaya sa anumang gusto kong gawin.
Walang samaan ng loob.”
Marami na raw silang di pinagkakasunduan ni Popoy pero ayon kay Marian
ayaw na niyang magbigay pa ng detalye.
Has Dingdong Dantes anything to do
with her decision?
“Wala siyang kinalaman dito. Hindi
niya ako inimpluwensiyahan. Basta sabi
niya, kung anuman ang decision ko, susuportahan niya ako.”
Pakikisama raw kay Mr. Tuviera kaya
siya dito lumipat, bukod dun sa maraming trabahong breaks na ibinigay sa
kanya nito noong araw. Parang sinasabi
rin ni Marian na may kinalaman si Mr.
Tuviera kaya siya kinuha noon ng GMA
7 para sa Marimar. After
that, GMA7 got her to do
supporting roles in their
own shows until she was
launched to full stardom
in “Marimar.” Her contract with GMA7 expires
in August. Does this mean
she’ll move to another channel? “Hintayin nyo na lang.”
She won’t say anything else. But
most writers feel it’d be a real big
loss for GMA7 if she’d really choose
to leave them. Her last show with
them is the hit “Temptation of Wife.”
She still has a pending movie with
GMA Films, “My Lady Boss,” which is
said to be shown in June yet. She’s now
filming “Kung Fu Divas”, a co-production
with Ai Ai de las Alas and Reality Entertainment, that will be an entry in the annual Metro-Manila Filmfest.
