Cage
Eggs from factory-farmed birds that are typically enclosed in battery cages.
Barn
Barn eggs come from hens kept inside in
large barns within which they can roam
freely. Hens must be provided with nest
boxes. Adequate perches, providing 15
centimetres of perch per hen, must also be
provided. Litter must be provided,
accounting for one-third of the ground
surface - this is used for scratching and
dust bathing.
Free Range
Free-range eggs are eggs produced using birds that are permitted to
roam freely within a farmyard, a shed or a chicken coop.
Bio/Organic
BIO eggs means chickens are raised without hormones or antibiotics and
are fed an organic diet. During the daylight hours the hens are free to roam
outside on organic pasture.
