JAMAICA, BETLEHEM HOME FOR DISABLE ORPHANTS!
Dear Friends in Christ,
This year, we, the dedicated group of lay volunteers and friends in Chicago and
Illinois who are suppor ng the works of the Missionaries of the Poor under the
patronage of St. Ferdinand parish, invite you to rejoice with us in a very special
way! For on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on of Mary, December 8 last year, our Holy Father, Pope Francis and the
Va can, elevated the Missionaries of the Poor (MOP) as a Religious Insitute of Pon fical Right – the highest status possible for a
religious community in the Catholic Church today!
We thank God for this great honor, blessing, encouragement and recogni on
of the MOP ministries by the Holy Father and the Va can – as Pope Francis
personally upli s the beau ful works, witness and ministry of the MOP
community, and also encourages all of us MOP supporters in our efforts to
serve!
We, the lay Supporters of the Missionaries of the Poor here in Chicago and
throughout Illinois joyfully con nue to unite in support of the growing works
of the MOP, as we seek to organize a container food drive for the children
and orphans in the Bethlehem and Mount Tabor Centers in Kingston,
Jamaica. Filled with the love of Jesus in their hearts, the Brothers serve over
300 mentally and physically–challenged abandoned and homeless children,
who are very much in need of our help for food, medicine, and other mission
supplies.
Thank you for your generous support of the poor in the previous years. In the midst of great suffering you help us to bring so
much comfort, joy and hope into the lives of God’s li le ones. You will be greatly blessed! We kindly ask you to con nue your
loving support this year as we are preparing a container of urgently needed food and medical supplies for the MOP missions in
Jamaica.
The following items are the most needed. Please consider dona ng them:
Food: rice, baby cereal, canned goods (tuna and any meat –badly needed, fruits, vegetables, tomato sauce), pasta, peanut
bu er, cooking oil, sugar, flour, powder milk, jam.
Supplies: diapers (sizes 5 to adult), bar soap, shampoo, toilet paper, baby powder, pain medicine, vitamins (for kids and
adults), first aid items (bandages, gauze, ointments, etc), toothbrushes and toothpaste.
You can bring above items to the church before and a er each mass on Saturday and
Sunday October 17/18.
Cash dona ons to purchase the above items are accepted and checks can be made out to:
Missionaries of the Poor and mailed to P.O. Box 34095, Chicago IL 60634. Contribu ons are

may ask a priest to offer a Mass for

graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit

8-go grudnia 2014 roku, w uroczystość Niepokalanego Poczęcia NMP, Ojciec
Święty Franciszek podniósł rangę Zgromadzenia Misjonarzy Ubogich do
Instytutu na prawie papieskim, które jest najwyższym statusem zgromadzenia
zakonnego w kościele Katolickim. Radujmy się z powodu tego wspaniałego wyróżnienia oraz błogosławieństwa jakie Ojciec
Święty Franciszek przekazuje nieocenionej pracy apostolskiej Misjonarzy Ubogich. Ojciec Święty osobiście wspiera piękne
świadectwo braci Misjonarzy Ubogich oraz ich posługę wśród najuboższych.
Jesteśmy grupą osób działających na rzecz Misjonarzy Ubogich w Chicago oraz na terenie stanu Illinois. Radośnie łączymy się z
ludźmi dobrej woli, aby wspierać rosnące dzieło Braci. W tym roku organizujemy zbiórkę żywności dla dzieci i sierot z ośrodka
Betlejem oraz Mount Tabor w Kingston na Jamajce. Bracia Misjonarze, napełnieni miłością Chrystusa, służą na Jamajce ponad
300 porzuconym oraz osieroconym, chorym fizycznie i umysłowo
dzieciom, które oczekują na żywność, lekarstwa oraz artykuły
pierwszej pomocy.
Z całego serca dziękujemy za Państwa hojność. Dzięki waszej pomocy,

ON MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, POETRY

No brag, just fact (to quote Walter Brennan from The Guns
of Will Sonne ): I’m a published poet. Of course, for every poem I
have in print, I have twenty-five that aren’t. But that’s OK. I’m not in
it for the dough. Actually, I didn’t choose to be in it at all. God put
the rhymes in my head, and from as far back as I can recall, I’ve
been using them. Perhaps more correctly, God put writerly skills
into my folks, who then passed them on to me. Prose came from
Mom. Poetry, from Pop. If he wrote more than two lines ever, I
don’t know, but he wrote two lines in an anniversary card to Mom
forever ago that s ll speak to me: “So in the end, I love you, honey/
And it sure beats paying alimony.”In a related vein, today’s Gospel
begins with the Pharisees asking Jesus, “Is it lawful for a husband to
divorce his wife?” Certainly they are tes ng him, but per usual
when they try to put Jesus on the spot, he doesn’t give them what
they want. “What did Moses command you?” he asks, and when
they say that Moses permi ed the ac on, Jesus responds, “Because
of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment,”
he says. “But from the beginning of crea on, God made them male
and female. For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one
flesh...therefore what God has joined together, no human being
must separate.”
And yet, according to an assessment of marriage in America posited
by the American Psychological Associa on on their website, “…
about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States di-
vorce.” I don’t know who the American Psychological Associa on is,
but based on numbers I’ve heard tossed about over the years, 40 to
50 percent sounds about right. Well, I don’t mean to be flippant,
but, huh? First, “Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” Then, “…about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce.” There’s a word I hear a
lot in the corporate world when results don’t meet expecta ons.
Disconnect. Exactly. No brag, just fact: my wife and I will celebrate
our 34th anniversary next month. I thank my folks for this as well.
Per an (unpublished) poem I wrote for Dad years ago, “In a way I do
not fully understand/ I love my wife because he cherished my mother.” Which is not to say that my parents didn’t have their share of
disagreements. Which is also not to say that Gail and I haven’t had
our share, too. S ll, we are blessed to have each other, and per a
(published) poem I wrote for her in 1981, “Hold me. Love me. Lay
beside me. Teach me. Touch me. Mys fy me. How I love the
thought of growing old with you.” At the same me, I have good
friends--good people--who have gone through divorce. Are they,
therefore, not blessed? That’s not how I see it. Not for a heartbeat.
Some marriages dissolve. Even so, Christ’s words should encourage
all married couples to do whatever they can to keep the good love
going. Yes, it sure beats paying alimony, but more so, married love
is the stuff of poetry. And be it published or unpublished, it’s Godinspired, beau ful verse.

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday
each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at
773/622-5900.
For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM. Please call Stan
