im Grandhotel Pupp spürt man nach einem Jahr wieder die aufgeregte Atmosphäre der
Erwartung. Man bereitet sich auf die elitäre Vorführung der Weltkinematografie - das
Internationale Filmfestival. Wie wird der 45. Jahrgang dieser Prestigeveranstaltung, die
man zu den Festivals von Berlin, Cannes und Venedig reiht? Welche Stars der

Bál Harmonie
Ples zdravotně postižených uzavírá karlovarskou
plesovou sezónu. Setkání se vyznačuje bezprostředností a dobrou náladou všech zúčastněných.
Taneční parket je obsazen, jen zazní první tóny. Se
svými průvodci tančí i vozíčkáři, slepci nebo lidé
mentálně postižení. Taneční vystoupení obyvatel
sociálních ústavů má vždy velký úspěch. Oblíbená

je i bohatá tombola, kterou dotují významní sponzoři. Účastníci si oblíbili moderátora plesu, karlovarského rodáka, herce Petra Rychlého. Hosty
letošního bálu byli senátor Jan Horník, exsenátor
Vladimír Kulhánek a zástupci sponzorů.
Významnými partnery bálu Harmonie je každoročně časopis Promenáda a Grandhotel Pupp.

Der Ball der körperlich Behinderten beendet die
Karlsbader Ballsaison. Das Treffen zeichnet sich
mit Unmittelbarkeit und guter Laune aller
Anwesenden aus. Das Tanzparkett ist gleich voll,
wenn die ersten Töne erklingen. Mit ihren
Begleitern tanzen auch die Rollstuhlfahrer, die
Blinden oder geistig Behinderte. Der Tanzauftritt
der Bewohner der Sozialanstalten hat immer einen
großen Erfolg. Beliebt ist auch die reiche Tombola,
die bedeutende Sponsoren dotieren. Die Teilnehmer
gewannen den Moderator des Balles, den
Karlsbader Landsmann, den Schauspieler Petr
Rychlý lieb. Die Gäste des diesjährigen Balls waren
der Senator Jan Horník, der Ex-Senator Vladimír
Kulhánek und die Vertreter der Sponsoren.
Bedeutende Partner vom Ball Harmonie sind auch
die Zeitschrift Promenáda und Grandhotel Pupp.
Ball Harmonie
The ball of handicapped people closes the ball
season in Karlovy Vary. The meeting distinguishes
itself by naturalness and a good mood of all taking part in it. The dance floor is full immediately
after you can hear the first sounds of music.
Wheelchair users, the blind as well as mentally
handicapped people dance here with their friends.
A raffle backed by important sponsors is popular
too. The visitors to the ball also like its emcee, the
native of Karlovy Vary, the actor Petr Rychlý. The
guests of this year’s ball were the senator Jan
Horník, the ex-senator Vladimír Kulhánek and the
representatives of sponsors. Important partners of
the ball Harmonie are also the magazine
Promenáda and the Grandhotel Pupp.
Dny Evropské šlechty
Dámy a pánové s modrou krví z celé Evropy se
opět po roce sešli v Karlových Varech. Slavnostně
zahájili karlovarskou dostihovou sezónu s magickým číslem 111 šesti rovinovými dostihy a tradiční přehlídkou klobouků. Setkání šlechticů mělo
na programu také maškarní bál v Císařských lázních a Jarní ples ve Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu
Pupp. Karlovy Vary a Grandhotel Pupp se tak
opět na několik dní staly místem s největší koncentrací aristokratů na zeměkouli.

Nach einem Jahr trafen sich wieder in Karlsbad die
Damen und Herren des blauen Blutes aus ganz
Europa. Sie eröffneten feierlich die Karlsbader
Pferderennensaison mit der magischen Zahl 111 mit
sechs Flachrennen und der traditionellen Hüteschau.
Das Frühjahrstreffen der Adeligen hatte auch einen
Maskenball im Kaiserbad und Frühjahrsball im Fest­
saal von Grandhotel Pupp am Programm. Karlsbad
und Grandhotel Pupp wurde so wieder auf ein paar
Tage zum Ort mit der höchsten Zusam­men­ballung
der Aristokraten auf der Welt.

Ladies and gentlemen with blue blood met in
Karlovy Vary again after a year. They started the
Karlovy Vary horse racing season with a magic
number 111 with six flat races and a traditional

the Grandhotel Pupp were also on the programme
of the noblemen’s spring meeting. Karlovy Vary
and the Grandhotel Pupp became places with the
highest concentration of aristocrats on earth for
a few days again.

v Grandhotelu Pupp
Zahájení lázeňské sezóny
Počátkem května se v Karlových Varech uskutečnilo
dvoudenní jednání skupiny evropských lidovců
(The Group of the European People‘s Party - EPP
Group) v čele s šéfem evropského parlamentu
Unie Jerzy Buzkem. Předmětem jednání bylo
zejména vytváření pracovních míst, boj proti
hazardním hrám a organizovanému zločinu. Jedním
z cílů rovněž bylo seznámit se s tradičním odvětvím
regionu - sklářstvím, a jeho současnými problémy.
Grandhotel Pupp se tak zapsal na prestižní mapu
míst jednání Evropského parlamentu.
Velmistr řádu křižovníků s červenou hvězdou Jiří
Kopejsko slavnostně vysvětil karlovarské léčivé
prameny. Zahájil tak spolu s králem Karlem IV.
a jeho družinou letošní karlovarskou lázeňskou
sezónu. Vše za doprovodu trhů a jarmarků, koncertů a dalších kulturních vystoupení. „Doufám,
že letošní lázeňská sezóna bude úspěšná a opět do
Karlových Varů přiláká návštěvníky, kteří se sem
budou rádi vracet a objevovat všechny krásy našeho města,“ přál si primátor Karlových Varů
Werner Hauptmann. Součástí víkendových slavností byl také Food Festival pořádaný Grand­ho­te­

Die Kursaisoneröffnung
Der Großmeister des Kreuzritterordens mit dem
Roten Stern Jiří Kopejsko segnete feierlich die
Karlsbader Heilquellen. Er eröffnete so zusammen
mit dem König Karl IV. und seinem Gefolge die
diesjährige Karlsbader Kursaison. Alles begleitet
von Märkten und Jahrmärkten, Konzerten und
weiteren Kulturauftritten. „Ich hoffe, dass die
diesjährige Kursaison erfolgreich wird und wieder
nach Karlsbad die Besucher lockt, die hierher
gern zurückkehren werden und alle Schönheiten
unserer Stadt entdecken werden,“ wünschte sich
der Oberbürgermeister von Karlsbad Werner
Hauptmann. Im Rahmen der Wochen­end­feier­lich­
keiten war auch das von Grandhotel Pupp veranstaltete Food Festival. (Mehr auf Seite 14.)

The Grand Master of the Knights of the Red Cross
Jiří Kopejsko consecrated the curative springs of
Karlovy Vary. In this way he started this year’s spa
season in Karlovy Vary together with King Charles
IV and his suite. Everything was accompanied by
markets and fairs, concerts and other cultural performances. „I hope that this year’s spa season will
be successful and will attract visitors to Karlovy
Vary again who will keep returning to discover all
beauties of our town“, the Mayor of Karlovy Vary

with gambling. One of its goals was also making
acquainted with the traditional branch of industry
of the region - glass-making and its present problems. The Grandhotel Pupp obtained its place on
the prestigious map of places where European
Parliament has met in this way.
Show Dance Gala 2010
V druhé polovině května se ve Slavnostním sále
uskutečnil již 12. ročník soutěže O krále figurálního valčíku Grandhotelu Pupp a o rok mladší pohárové soutěže párů a skupin Show Dance.
Hlavní cenou pro vítěze byl v letošním roce víkendový pobyt v Grandhotelu Pupp.

Anfang Mai fand in Karlsbad eine zweitägige
Tagung der Gruppe der Europäischen Volksparteien
(The Group of the European People‘s Party - EPP
Group) angeführt von dem Vorsitzenden des
Europäischen Parlaments Jerzy Buzek statt. Der
Ver­handlungsgegenstand war vor allem die Schaf­
fung von neuen Arbeitsplätzen, die Be­kämpfung
des Glückspiels und des organisierten Verbrechens.
Einer der Ziele war gleichfalls sich mit dem
traditionellen Produktionszweig der Region - der
Glasherstellung, und seinen heutigen Problemen
bekannt zu machen. Das Grandhotel Pupp schrieb
sich somit in die Prestigekarte der Verhandlungsorte
des Europäischen Parlaments ein.
In der zweiten Maihälfte fand im Festsaal bereits
der 12. Jahrgang des Wettbewerbs Um den König
des Figurenwalzers von Grandhotel Pupp und der
um ein Jahr jüngere Pokalwettbewerb der Paare
und Gruppen Show Dance statt. Der Hauptpreis
für den Gewinner war in diesem Jahr ein
Wochenendaufenthalt im Grandhotel Pupp.

and groups Show Dance were held in the Festive
Hall in the second half of May. The main prize
was a weekend stay in the Grandhotel Pupp.

President of European Parliament of the Union
Jerzy Buzek was held in Karlovy Vary in early
May. The subject of the talks was especially the
creation of working opportunities and the fight

Nové informační centrum otevřelo u příležitosti zahájení letošní lázeňské sezóny Carlsbad Convention Bureau
(CCB) na pěší zóně v budově hotelu Thermal. Jde
o první regionální informační centrum pro prezentaci
Karlových Varů a Karlovarského kraje jako prestižní
lázeňské, turistické a kongresové destinace. Informační
centrum slavnostně otevřela generální ředitelka Grand­
hotelu Pupp a zároveň předsedkyně správní rady CCB
Ing. Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová společně s generálním ředitelem hotelu Thermal JUDr. Josefem Pavlem. Zaklá­
dajícím a dosud nejaktivnějším členem CCB je
Grandhotel Pupp. Jde o projekt, kde významné karlovarské hotely místo soupeření naopak spojují síly, aby
představily město a celý region v tom nejlepším světle
s akcentem na kongresovou turistiku. Carlsbad Regional
Point však poskytuje plnohodnotný informační servis
o městě i kraji sedm dní v týdnu všem, kteří do něj zavítají. Je tak významným příspěvkem ke zvýšení standardu služeb v této oblasti pro všechny hosty a návštěvníky Karlových Varů a kraje.

Ein neues Infozentrum setzte das Carlsbad Convention
Bureau (CCB) anlässlich der Eröffnung der neuen
Kursaison auf der Fußgängerzone im Hotel Thermal in
Betrieb. Es handelt sich um das erste regionale Info­
zentrum für die Vorstellung von Karlsbad und des Karls­
bader Kreises als eine bedeutende Kur-, Tourismus- und
Kongressdestination. Das Infozentrum wurde feierlich
von der Grandhotel Pupp General­direktorin und zugleich
der Vorsitzenden des CCB Verwaltungsrates Frau Ing.
Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová zusammen mit dem General­
direktor von Hotel Thermal Herrn JUDr. Josef Pavel
eröffnet. Das Gründungs- und bisher das aktivste Mitglied
von CCB ist das Grandhotel Pupp. Es handelt sich um ein
Projekt, wo die bedeutenden Karlsbader Hotels anstatt
sich einander zu konkurrieren ihre Kräfte einigen, um die
Stadt und die ganze Region im möglichst besten Licht
vorzustellen, mit Akzent auf die Kongresstouristik. Der
Carlsbad Regional Point bietet allen, die hierher kommen, einen vollwertigen Infoservice sieben Tage in der
Woche. Er trägt somit bedeutend zur Erhöhung des
Dienstleistungsniveaus in dieser Region für alle Gäste
und Besucher von Karlsbad und des Kreises bei.
The Carlsbad Convention Bureau (CCB) has

Hotel on the pedestrian zone on the occasion of
the opening of the new spa season. It is the first
regional information centre to present Karlovy
Vary and the Karlovy Vary region as prestigious
spa, tourist and congress destinations. The information centre was opened by the general director of the Grandhotel Pupp Ing. Andrea PfefferFerklová, who is also the head of the CCB board,
and JUDr. Josef Pavel, the general director of the
Thermal Hotel. It is a project where prestigious
spa hotels of Karlovy Vary unite their strengths
instead of competing with the aim to show the
best of Karlovy Vary and the whole region and
to stress the importance of congress tourism. The
Carlsbad Regional Point provides full information service seven days a week to everyone who
visits it. It represents an important contribution
to the increase in the standard of services in this
field for all guests and visitors to Karlovy Vary
and the region.

„vynalezl“ puky na kalhotech?
Při své návštěvě Grandhotelu
Pupp (1907) se šel před slavnostní večeří projít do lesa a roztrhl si kalhoty. V obchodě s oblečením si ze sloupce složených kalhot vybral
nové. Se slovy „Není času nazbyt“ odmítl vyžehlení, převlékl se a pronesl projev. Karlovarští
žasli, jaké to má panovník na kalhotech podivné
čáry a rýhy. Druhý den uspořádal starosta
v Puppu na počest krále snídani. A hle - všichni
pánové se objevili s lépe či hůře nažehlenými
puky na kalhotech. Nechtěli zaostat za posledním výkřikem anglické módy, který jim včera
Jeho Veličenstvo předvedlo.

Přicestoval v létě roku 1948 a jeho návštěva
vzbudila u lázeňských hostů i u Karlovarských

… der englische König Edward VII. in Karlsbad durch
Versehen „die Bügelfalten an der Hose erfand“?
Während seines Grandhotel Pupp Besuchs (1907)
ging er vor dem Festabendessen in den Wald spazieren
und er zerriss sich seine Hose. Im Bekleidungs­geschäft
nahm er vom Stand eine neue Hose. Mit den Worten
„es gibt keine Zeit zu verlieren“ lehnte er das Bügeln
ab, er zog sich um und hielt seine Rede. Die Karls­ba­
der staunten, welche merkwürdige Striche und Rillen
der Herrscher an seiner Hose hat. Am zweiten Tag
veranstaltete der Bürgermeister im Pupp zu Ehren des
Königs ein Frühstück. Und siehe - alle Herren erschienen mit besser oder schlechter gebügelten Bügelfalten
an der Hose. Sie wollten nicht hinter dem letzten
Schrei der englischen Mode zurückbleiben.

Vary? He ripped his trousers when he went for
a walk before a gala dinner during his stay in the
Grandhotel Pupp (1907).He chose new ones
from a pile of trousers in a clothes shop. He refused ironing with the words ”I have no time to
spare”, changed them and made a speech. The
inhabitants of Karlovy Vary were astonished to
see the king’s trousers with strange lines and creases. Next day the mayor gave a gala breakfast in
the Pupp in king’s honour. And guess what - all
gentlemen appeared with better or worse creases
on their trousers. They did not want to lag behind
the latest English fashion which His Majesty had
shown them the day before.

Yes, it was located in Březová by Karlovy Vary and
every month it supplied flowers worth 40,000 CZK

Food Festival Karlsbad 2010
Velmi populární festival přivítalo v průběhu prvomájového odpoledne prostranství před hotelem
Thermal. V letošním roce již podruhé prezentovaly
své gastronomické speciality hotelové i nezávislé
restaurace karlovarského regionu. Ve stánku
Grandhotelu Pupp mohli návštěvníci ochutnat
dezerty a kávy z nabídky Café Pupp, za koktejlovým barem míchali barmani Becher´s Baru desítky koktejlů a kuchaři přímo před očima hostů připravovali šťavnaté tortilly. Studenti střediska praktického vyučování při Grandhotelu Pupp se rozhodli představit tradiční českou svíčkovou omáčku v pojetí „Není svíčková jako svíčková“.
Všechny nabízené speciality se setkaly s velkým
zájmem hostů, o čemž svědčí téměř 3 000 prodaných degustačních porcí. Speciální akcí letošního
ročníku Food Festivalu Karlovy Vary bylo národní finále Czech Food Cupu 2010 - soutěže pro
restaurace sdružené v projektu Czech Specials.
Pro finálové kolo byla vybrána jako soutěžní
chod rajská omáčka. V souboji chutí, vůní a kulinářských fines zvítězila ta z Orea Hotelu Bílý
Hořec v Harrachově. Podle výroku porotců vaří
nejlepší rajskou omáčku v České republice právě
v Krkonoších. Vrcholem festivalu byl pokus o zápis do české edice Guinessovy knihy rekordů
s největším počtem číšníků na jednom místě a následně již tradiční běh inspirovaný známým českým filmem „Vrchní, prchni“. Číšníků se sešlo na
čtyři desítky. Pokud jste si nechali letošní ročník
Food Festivalu Karlovy Vary ujít, rozhodně si nezapomeňte poznamenat datum 1. května 2011,
kdy se bude konat jeho třetí ročník.

Unter den Besuchern sehr beliebtes Festival begrüßte während des ersten Mainachmittags der
Platz vor dem Hotel Thermal. In diesem Jahr
stellten bereits zum zweiten Mal ihre gastronomi­
schen Spezialitäten die Hotelrestaurants sowie die
selbstständigen Restaurants der Karlsbader Region
vor. Im Stand von Grandhotel Pupp konnten die
Besucher Desserts und Kaffees aus dem Angebot
vom Café Pupp probieren, hinter der Cocktailbar
mischten die Barkeeper der Becher´s Bar
Dutzende Cocktails und die Köche bereiteten direkt vor den Augen der Gäste saftige Tortillas. Die
Studenten des Zentrums für den praktischen
Unterricht im Grandhotel Pupp entschlossen sich
die traditionelle tschechische Lendenbratensoße
in der Auffassung „Es ist nicht Lendenbraten wie
Lendenbraten“ vorzustellen. Alle angebotenen
Spezialitäten trafen auf großes Interesse der Gäste,
worüber fast 3.000 verkaufte Degustations­por­
tionen zeugen. Eine Sonderveranstaltung des
dies­jährigen Jahrgangs des Food Festivals Karlsbad
war das nationale Finale vom Czech Food Cup
2010 – eines Wettbewerbs für die Restaurants, die
im Projekt Czech Specials tätig sind. Für die
Finalrunde wurde als das Wettbewerbsgericht die
Tomatensoße ausgewählt. Im Wettkampf der
Geschmäcke, Düfte und kulinarischen Finessen
gewann die aus dem Orea Hotel Bílý Hořec in
Harrachov. Laut der Aussage der Jury kocht man
die beste Tomatensoße in der Tschechischen
Republik gerade im Riesengebirge. Der Höhepunkt
des Festivals war Versuch um den Eintrag ins
­tschechische Guiness Buch der Rekorde mit der
höchsten Anzahl der Kellner auf einer Stelle und
danach der bereits traditionelle Lauf inspiriert
durch den bekannten tschechischen Film „Vrchní,
prchni“ („Lauf Ober lauf!“). Die Kellner kamen
an die vierzig zusammen. Falls Sie sich den dies­
jährigen Jahrgang des Food Festivals Karlsbad
entgehen ließen, vergessen Sie sich bestimmt
nicht das Datum 1. Mai 2011 zu notieren, wann
sein dritter Jahrgang stattfinden wird.

Food Festival Karlovy Vary 2010
The space in front of the Thermal Hotel welcomed the popular festival on the first May afternoon. Hotel and independent restaurants of the
Karlovy Vary region have already presented their
gastronomic specialties for the second time this
year. Visitors could taste desserts and coffee from
the offer of the Café Pupp here, barmen of the
Becher´s Bar mixed tens of cocktails and cooks
prepared delicious tortillas before the guests´very
eyes. Students from the centre of practical training
of the Grandhotel Pupp decided to present the
traditional Czech cream sauce in the style ”There
is a cream sauce and a cream sauce”. Guests
showed a lot of interest in all offered specialties
and almost 3,000 sold tasting portions proved it.
A special event of this year’s Food Festival Karlovy
Vary was the national finals of the Czech Food
Cup 2010 – a competition associated in the project Czech Specials. Tomato sauce was chosen as
a competition course in the final round. The
competition of tastes, smells and culinary tricks
was won by the sauce cooked in the Orea Hotel
Bílý Hořec in Harrachov. The best tomato sauce
is cooked just in the Giant Mountains by the verdict of the jury. The top of the festival was an attempt at an entry in the Czech edition of the
Guinness Book of Records with the highest number of waiters in one place and a traditional run
inspired by the famous Czech film ”Run Away,
Waiter”. Almost forty waiters met here. If you
missed this year’s Food Festival Karlovy Vary, do
not definitely forget to write down the date of 1st
May 2011 where its third year will be held.

Držitelka Oscara a představitelka Bridget Jonesové přijela do Karlových Varů na pozvání Mezinárodního filmového festivalu v roce 2007. Mezi fanoušky a fotografy vzbudila slavná americká herečka velkou pozornost
hned v úvodu filmové přehlídky. Její návštěvu totiž
provázela drobná komplikace - zavazadla filmové hvězdy se opozdila. Nabídku prezidenta festivalu Jiřího
Bartošky, že jí zakoupí v luxusním obchodě nové šaty,
s díky odmítla. Renée Zellweger uvedla v civilních šatech životopisný snímek o autorce dětských knížek Miss
Potter (2006), v němž strhujícím způsobem ztvárnila
titulní hrdinku, autorku oblíbených knih pro děti z přelomu 19. a 20. století. Rovněž cenu za mimořádný
umělecký přínos světové kinematografii předala legendě českého animovaného filmu Břetislavu Pojarovi
v tričku a džínách. Nic to neubralo na jejím půvabu.
V Grandhotelu Pupp se dlouho nezdržela, ale
v Císařském apartmá přijala nabídku na odpočinek
a občerstvení. „Slavnou herečku jsme s kolegou potkali
ve služební části hotelu, kde bloudila mezi kancelářemi.
Na dotaz, jak jí můžeme pomoci, nám pošeptala, že
hledá východ. Pochopili jsme, že se chce vyhnout fotografům a ukázali jí východ pro zaměstnance,“ vzpomíná
Květa Koubková. Celosvětovou popularitu zajistila
Renée Zellweger role zakomplexované slečny v komedii Deník Bridget Jonesové včetně volného pokračování. Šíři svého hereckého talentu prokázala např. v romantickém velkofilmu z doby americké občanské války
Návrat do Cold Mountain. Za roli svérázné Ruby získala nejen svůj třetí Zlatý glóbus, ale především svého
prvního Oscara. Mimořádně úspěšné role si zahrála
i ve filmech Jerry Maguire (1996), Sestřička Betty
(1999) a v muzikálu Chicago (2002).

Die Oscarpreisträgerin und die Darstellerin von

Internationalen Filmfestival im Jahre 2007 eingeladen. Unter den Fans und den Fotografen weckte die
berühmte amerikanische Schauspielerin großes
Aufsehen gleich zu Beginn der Filmschau. Ihren
Besuch begleitete nämlich eine kleine Komplikation

- das Gepäck der Filmstar verspätete sich. Das
Angebot vom Festivalpräsidenten Jiří Bartoška, ihr
im Luxusgeschäft ein neues Kleid zu kaufen, lehnte
sie mit Dank ab. Renée Zellweger führte in
Zivilkleidung den biografischen Film über die
Kinderbuchautorin Miss Potter (2006) an, in dem
sie mit hinreisender Art die Hauptrolle darstellte, die
Autorin der beliebten Kinderbücher um die Wende
des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Ebenso den Preis für
den außergewöhnlichen künstlerischen Beitrag der
Weltkinematografie übergab sie der Legende des tschechischen animierten Films Břetislav Pojar im TShirt und Jeans. Trotzdem nahm es nichts an ihrer
Attraktivität. Im Grandhotel Pupp hielt sie sich nicht
lange auf, aber im kaiserlichen Appartement nahm
sie das Angebot an Erholung und Erfrischung an.
„Die berühmte Schauspielerin traf ich mit meinem
Kollegen im Betriebsteil des Hotels, wo sie zwischen
den Büros irrte. Auf die Frage, wie man ihr helfen
kann, flüsterte sie uns zu, dass sie den Ausgang
sucht. Uns wurde klar, dass sie den Fotografen entgehen wollte und wir zeigten ihr den Ausgang für die
Angestellten,“ erinnert sich Květa Koubková.
Weltweite Popularität sicherte Renée Zellweger die
Rolle eines kleinmütigen Fräuleins in der Komödie
Schokolade zum Frühstück (Bridget Jones´s Diary)
und der freien Fortsetzung. Die Breite ihres schauspielerischen Talents bewies sie z. B. in dem romantischen Blockbuster aus der Zeit des amerikanischen
Bürger­krieges Unterwegs nach Cold Mountain. Für
die Rolle der eigenartigen Ruby erhielt sie nicht nur
ihren dritten Goldenen Globus, sondern vor allem
ihren ersten Oscar. Außergewöhnlich erfolgreiche
Rollen spielte sie auch in den Filmen Jerry Maguire
- Spiel des Lebens (1996), Nurse Betty (1999) und
im Musical Chicago (2002).

The Oscar winner and actress Bridget Jones came to
Karlovy Vary by invitation of the International Film
Festival in 2007. She arose much attention among fans
and photographers right at the beginning of the festival.
Her visit was accompanied by a little complication - the
luggage of the film star got delayed. However, she refused the offer of the president of the festival to buy her
a new dress in a luxury shop. Renée Zellweger presented the biographical film about the authoress of books
for children Miss Potter (2006) in civilian. She played
the main part in the film - the writer of popular books
for children from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - in a breathtaking way. And she also presented
a prize for an exceptional contribution to the world of
cinematography to the legend of Czech animated film
Břetislav Pojar - in a T-shirt and jeans. It did not reduce
her beauty. She did not stay in the Grandhotel Pupp for
a long time but she accepted the offer of refreshment
and some rest in the Imperial Suite. ”I and my colleague met the famous actress in the hotel operation part
where she was trying to find her way among offices.
Being asked how we could help her, she whispered she
was looking for an exit. We understood she wanted to
avoid photographers and we showed her the exit for the
staff,” Květa Koubková reminisces. Renée Zellweger
gained worldwide fame thanks to the part of a young
lady full of complexes in the comedy Bridget Jones’s
Diary including its free continuation. She proved the
scope of her talent in films like the romantic big-budget
film from the time of the American Civil War the Return
to Cold Mountain. She was not only awarded her third
Golden Globe for the part of peculiar Ruby, but she also
obtained her first Oscar for it. She also played exceptionally successful parts in the films Jerry Maguire (1996),
Sister Betty (1999) and the musical Chicago (2002).

Nicolo Paganini
a éra slavných koncertů
Saský sál zažil nejslavnější koncert své bezmála
dvousetleté historie 18. srpna 1828, kdy zde své
houslové mistrovství nadšenému publiku předvedl
sám „Bůh violy“, Ital z Janova, rytíř Nicolo
Paganini (1782-1840), jenž prodléval v Karlových
Varech na léčení. Mistr odehrál koncert, i když jej
trápily velmi silné bolesti zubů. Vstupenka na

tých a čtyřicátých letech 19. století v Puppovské
aleji provozovali bratři Tadeáš a Leopold Platzerovi,
místní nožíři, litografové a kartografové, populární
podívanou, jež se jmenovala Cosmorama. Každý
týden ve speciální dřevěné budově ukazovali za
mírné vstupné rozličné, jimi namalované a komentované velkoplošné výjevy významných dobových
událostí a osobností. Jednalo se o jakési ilustrované zprávy ze světa prezentované za pomoci optické
techniky zvané Camera obscura. Tu lze s nadsázkou označit za předchůdce promítání diapozitivů.
S ještě větší nadsázkou můžeme Cosmoramu považovat za předchůdce kina.

Großes Hochwasser im Jahre 1821
Ganz Karlsbad, somit auch der Puppsche Saal,
wurde im Jahre 1821 von einem schrecklichen
Hochwasser sehr verwüstet. Die Gesamtschäden
wurden auf 224 000 Gulden festgelegt. In der
Nacht von dem 9. auf den 10. September 1821 trat
das Flüsschen Tepl stark über sein Ufer. Die größte
Stadtverwüstung erfolgte bis Mitternacht. Neun
Verkaufboutiquen in der Puppschen Allee wurden
vom Wasser niedergerissen und völlig zerstört. Der
Böhmische Saal wurde von Wasser bis in die Höhe
der oberen Arkaden überschwemmt, das gesamte
Erdgeschoss wurde gänzlich zerstört. Es hoben sich
hier alle Fußböden, die Fenster wurden ausgeschlagen, vernichtet wurden auch alle Sessel, Stühle,
Tische, Kanapees, Lüster, Billardtische und Spiegel.
Große Schäden hatten Josef Pupp und der Konditor
Zörkendörfer auch an Zucker-, Schokolade- und
Vanillevorräten, an Besteck, Geschirr, Gläser und
Wäsche. Ähnlich sah es im Sächsischen Saal aus.
Überall schwammen im trüben Wasser Tische,
Stühle, Sessel und Sofas. Im Hause Auge Gottes
reichte das Wasser bis über den oberen Bogen der
Eingangstür. Die Puppsche Allee war nicht zugänglich, völlig überschwemmt, voll von Schlamm und
angeschwemmtem Holz. Die Linden, die über
100 Jahre Stolz des Parks waren, wurden stark
beschädigt, die alten Bäume begannen langsam
abzusterben. In den Jahren 1825- 1826, wie bereits
erwähnt, wurden sie gefällt und von jungen
Bäumen ersetzt. Alle Narben nach dem Hochwasser
wurden mit eifriger Arbeit der Führung und des
Personals von dem Böhmischen und Sächsischen
Saal nach und nach verheilt.

Saal am 18. August 1828, als hier seine
Geigenkunst, dem begeisterten Publikum, selbst
der „Geigengott“ vorstellte, der Italiener aus
Genua, Ritter Nicolo Paganini (1782 - 1840), der
in Karlsbad zur Kur weilte. Der Meister konzertier­
te, obwohl ihn sehr starke Zahnschmerzen plagten. Die Eintrittskarte ins Konzert kostete viel
Geld, ganze 4 Gulden. Der gesamte finanzielle
Gewinn des famosen Abends betrug 1 017 Gul­
den, was beinahe der Durch­schnitts­jahres­gewinn
vom Böhmischen Saal war. Die Reaktion auf das
Konzert war riesig, mit Bewunderung schrieben
darüber, sowohl der Karlsbader Chronist und
Bürgermeister Josef Johann Lenhart, als auch die
Zeitungen in ganz Böhmen. Im Jahre 1829 feierten die Karlsbader im Puppschen Saal den
Geburts­tag von Kaiser Franz mit einem Benefiz­
konzert zu Gunsten der Armen. Im gleichen Jahr
konzertierte im Böhmischen Saal der Musik liebende Karlsbader Bürgermeister Josef Johann
Lenhart mit Johann Nepomuk Hummel (17781837), einem vorderen Komponisten und Klavier­
spieler seiner Zeit, den letzten Schüler des genialen Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Seine Klavierkunst
bewunderte auch Goethe, dessen manche Ge­
dich­te von Hummel vertont wurden.
Im Jahre 1840 erlebte der Böhmische und der
Sächsische Saal eine äußerst große Reihe von
Konzerten, was zeitgenössische Plakaten belegen.
Am 9. Juli 1840 spielte im Böhmischen Saal der
Geigenvirtuose W. Hilf. Auf seine Vorstellung lud
das Publikum ein Sonderartikel im Karlsbader
Anzei­geblatt von dem bekannten Prager Musik­
komponisten Václav Jan Tomášek (1774-1850),
dem Freund von Persönlichkeiten der tschechischen nationalen Wiedergeburt und von Goethe,

graphen, ein populäres Spektakel, das Cos­mo­rama
hieß, betrieben. Jede Woche zeigten sie in einem
besonderen Holzgebäude für kleinen Eintritt verschiedene, von ihnen gemalte und kommentierte,
großflächige Szenen, von bedeutenden damaligen
Ereignissen und Persönlichkeiten. Es handelte sich
um gewisse illustrierte Nachrichten aus der Welt,
präsentiert mit Hilfe von optischer Technik, genannt Camera obscura. Diese kann man übertrieben als Vorgänger der Projektions­diapositive bezeichnen. Mit noch größerer Über­trei­bung kann
man Cosmorama für einen Kino­vorgänger halten.

GRANDHOTEL PUPP A JEHO OKOLÍ
Grandhotel Pupp patří ke Karlovým Varům jako
šlehačka k vídeňské kávě. Legendární hotel dosud
vyzařuje fluidum zlatého věku habsburské říše.
Jeho kořeny sahají až do let 1701 a 1728, kdy
byli při ohybu Teplé, na konci Nové louky postaveni jeho přímí předchůdci: Saský a Český sál.
V díle průkopníka slávy hotelu, Johanna Georga
Puppa, pokračovalo několik generací potomků.
Po demolici sálů byl postaven nový Grandhotel
Pupp. Na počátku 20. století se na velké modernizaci komplexu podíleli slavní vídenští stavitelé
Fellner a Helmer. Obrázky z ohbí řeky dělí časový
odstup 150 let. Na staré vedutě Eduarda Gurka je
vpravo vidět puppovská alej a památný dům Boží
oko, k němuž přiléhá Český sál. V pozadí na levém břehu stojí altán pivovarské studny. Barokní
budova starého pivovaru je na akvarelu Antona
Drumma z roku 1890. V pozadí je vidět evangelický kostel z roku 1856. Pivovar, dokončený
v roce 1732, ustoupil po 160 letech existence expanzi lázeňství. 6. května 1895 byla na jeho místě
otevřena majestátní budova Císařských lázní, postavená opět podle plánů Fellnera a Helmera.
Hlavními atrakcemi lázní byl Zanderův sál se cvičebními přístroji a luxusní koupelové apartmá pro
císaře Františka Josefa I. V současnosti čekají
Císařské lázně na rekonstrukci.

Das Grandhotel Pupp gehört zu Karlsbad wie die
Sahne zum Wiener Kaffee. Das legendäre Hotel
strahlt bis heute die Atmosphäre des Goldenen
Zeitalters der Habsburger Monarchie aus. Seine
Wurzeln reichen bis in die Jahre 1701 und 1728, als
am Flussbogen der Tepl, am Ende der Neuen Wiese
seine direkte Vorfahren gebaut wurden: der
Sächsische und der Böhmische Saal. Das Werk des

setzten einige Generationen von Nach­kommen fort.
Nach dem Abbruch der Säle wurde ein neues
Grandhotel Pupp erbaut. Am Anfang des 20. Jahr­
hunderts beteiligten sich an der umfangreichen
Modernisierung des Gebäude­komplexes die berühmten Wiener Baumeister Fellner und Helmer. Die
Bilder vom Flussbogen sind voneinander 150 Jahre
entfernt. An der alten Vedute von Eduard Gurk sieht
man rechts die Puppsche Allee und das denkwürdige Haus Auge Gottes, wozu der Böhmische Saal
anliegt. Im Hintergrund am linken Flussufer steht
der Altan des Brauereibrunnens. Das barocke
Gebäude der alten Brauerei ist am Aquarell von
Anton Drumm aus dem Jahre 1890. Im Hintergrund
kann man die evangelische Kirche aus dem Jahre
1856 sehen. Die Brauerei, im Jahre 1732 errichtet,
wich nach 160 Jahren seines Bestehens der
Ausdehnung des Kurwesens. Am 6. Mai 1895 wurde an ihrer Stelle das majestätische Kaiser­
badgebäude eröffnet, erbaut wieder nach Plänen
von Fellner und Helmer. Der Hauptanziehungspunkt
von diesem Bad war der Zander Saal mit Turn­

Kaiserbad auf eine Rekonstruktion.

Grandhotel Pupp
and its Surroundings
The Grandhotel Pupp belongs to Karlovy Vary as
whipped cream belongs to coffee. The legendary
hotel still radiates an aura of the Golden Age of
the Hapsburg Empire. Its roots go back to the
­years 1701 - 1728, when there were built its direct
predecessors Saxon and Czech Halls by the bend
of River Teplá at the end of New Meadow.
Several generations of offspring of Johann Georg
Pupp, the pioneer of the hotel fame, continued in
his work. After the halls demolition, there was
built a new Grandhotel Pupp. At the beginning of
the 20th century, famous Vienne builders Fellner
and Helmer participated at large modernisation of
the complex. Pictures from the river bend split
the time interval of 150 years. On the right side
of the old scenery view of Eduard Gurk we can
see Pupp´s alley and memorable house God´s
Eye with adjacent Czech Hall. In the background,
on the left bank, there stands an arbour of
a brewing well. Baroque building of the old
brewery is on the aquarelle by Anton Drumm
from the year 1890. In the background, we can
see Evangelical Church from the year 1856. After
160 years of its existence, the brewery, completed
in the year 1732, gave place to the spa expansion.
On 6th May 1895, there was opened a majestic
building of Imperial Spa, on the brewery´s place,
built also according to plans of Fellner and
Helmer. Main attraction of the Spa was a Zander
Hall with exercise equipment and luxury apartment for the Emperor Franz Josef I. Nowadays,
the Imperial Spa is waiting for its reconstruction.

kolová, vítkův vrch, andělská hora
Od Grandhotelu Pupp se kolem Císařských lázní
vypravíme proti proudu Teplé na výlet, kde nás sice
může pozlobit stoupání, ale odměnou nám budou
krásné výhledy téměř po celých 24 km. Mineme
Poštovní dvůr, za ním přejedeme most přes Teplou
a dáme se vpravo, kde začíná silnička, která nás od
Beethovenova altánu delším, ale nikoli příkrým
stoupáním vyvede lesem z karlovarského údolí na náhorní plošinu. Rybník Kolovák po pravé straně
oznamuje konec jízdy do kopce. Toto přírodní koupaliště je ideálním místem k osvěžení a odpočinku. Odsud
se napojíme doleva na místní silnici a po chvíli se
vpravo otevře výhled na karlovarské letiště, Andělskou
horu a Doupovské vrchy. Pár set metrů před námi vlevo je Vítkův vrch s vyhlídkovou restaurací - dalším
místem k možné regeneraci a potěšení krajinným panoramatem. Pokračujeme po silnici kolem letiště až do
Olšových Vrat a odsud z náměstíčka vlevo k hlavní
pražské silnici. Tu přejedeme a podél areálu Golf
Resort a přes luka doputujeme až na Andělskou
Horu. Stejnou cestou se vydáme zpět ke golfovému
areálu, kde se lze občerstvit v Golfrestaurantu a pak
pokračovat zpět do Olšových Vrat. Za obcí u nádrže
Krach, odbočíme doprava na Hůrky. Odsud nás čeká
dlouhý sjezd do údolí, který nabídne jeden z nejkrásnějších výhledů na Karlovy Vary. Sjedeme až k ulici Na
Vyhlídce, po ní se dáme vpravo a asi po 200 m zahneme doleva, do klesající Moravské ulice, která nás kolem
chrámu sv. Máří Magdalény přivede zpět k Teplé, na
dohled Grandhotelu Pupp. Doporučejeme vzít s sebou
jasné počasí a dalekohled. Šťastnou cestu.

Hundert Meter vor uns links ist der Hügel Vítkův
vrch mit einem Aussichtsrestaurant - einem weiteren
Ort zur möglichen Erholung und Vergnügen am
Landschaftspanorama. Wir fahren weiter die Straße am
Flugplatz vorbei bis nach Olšova Vrata (Espentor)
und von hier aus vom Marktplatz links zur Prager
Straße. Diese überqueren wir und entlang des Golf
Resort Geländes und über die Wiesen kommen wir bis
nach Andělská Hora (Engelhaus). Den gleichen
Weg begeben wir uns zurück zum Golfgelände, wo
man sich im Golfrestaurant erfrischen kann und dann
weiter zurück nach Olšova Vrata. Hinter der Gemeinde
am Stausee Krach, biegt man nach rechts ab nach
Hůrky (Berghäuseln). Von hier aus erwartet uns eine lange Abfahrt ins Tal, die eine der schönsten
Aussichten auf Karlsbad bietet. Man fährt bis zur Straße
Na Vyhlídce, man fährt auf ihr nach rechts und etwa
nach 200 m biegen wir nach links ab, in die Moravská
Straße, die uns an der Maria Magdalena Kirche
vorbei zurück zur Tepl führt, nicht weit vom Grandhotel
Pupp. Wir empfehlen klares Wetter und ein Fernglas
mitzunehmen. Gute Reise.

Kolová, Hill Vítkův vrch, Angel Mt.
From the Grandhotel Pupp past Imperial Spa we
set out for a trip upstream the river Teplá, where we can
fight with climb, but our reward is be beautiful views
throughout the whole 24 kilometres. We pass Postal
Courtyard then we cross the bridge over the river
Teplá and turn right, where small road begins and takes
us from Beethoven´s Pavilion out of Carlsbad Valley
to plateau by longer but not a steep climb. Lake
Kolovák on the right side signals the end of the ride
up the hill. This natural lido is an ideal place for refresh­
ment and rest. Here we turn left to the local road and
after a while, on the right side, we could enjoy the view
to Karlovy Vary Airport, Andělská hora (Angel Mt.) and
Doupovské vrchy (Doupov Hills). Few hundred meters
ahead on the left there is a hill Vítkův vrch with
a view restaurant - another place for possible regeneration and pleasure of scenic panorama. We continue on
a road past the airport to Olšová Vrata and thence
from square left towards main Prague road. We cross
the Prague road and past the areal Golf Resort and
across meadows we get to Andělská Hora.
We go the way back towards the golf coursel, where we
could refresh in Golfrestaurant and then continue
back to Olšová Vrata. Past the village by the reservoir
Krach we turn right to Hůrky. From here we can enjoy
a long ride down the valley with one of the most beautiful views to Karlovy Vary. We ride down to the road
Na Vyhlídce, on which we ride right and after about
200 metres we turn left to decreasing Moravská street,
which takes us past the St. Mary Magdalene Church
back to the river Teplá in sight of the Grandhotel Pupp.

Kolová (Kohlhau), Vítkův vrch,
Andělská Hora (Engelhaus)
Vom Grandhotel Pupp am Kaiserbad vorbei begeben wir uns flussaufwärts der Tepl auf einen Ausflug,
wo uns zwar eine Steigung ärgern kann, aber zur
Belohnung werden uns schöne Aussichten fast die gesamten 24 km. Wir fahren am Posthof vorbei, dahinter
überqueren wir die Tepl über eine Brücke und dann
fahren wir nach rechts, wo am Beethovens Altan eine
längere, keineswegs aber steile Steigung beginnt. Dieser
Weg durch den Wald führt uns aus dem Karlsbader Tal
auf eine Hochebene. Der Teich Kolovák auf der
rechten Seite teilt uns das Ende der Bergauffahrt mit.
Dieses Freibad ist ein idealer Ort zur Erfrischung und
Erholung. Von hier aus fahren wir nach links auf die
hiesige Straße und nach einer Weile eröffnet sich rechts
die Aussicht auf den Karlsbader Flugplatz, die
Engelsburg und das Duppauer Gebirge. Ein paar
