Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Manukaöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation aus den Blättern und Zweigen der
Südseemyrte (Manuka, Leptospermum scoparium) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer Wasserdampf als
Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen organischen Komponenten der Pflanzenteile. Durch die NichtMischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim
Abkühlen eine spontane Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden
kann.[1]
Manufacturing method
The essential manuka oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the leaves and twigs of manuka
(Leptospermum scoparium). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the parts
of the plant. Due to the non miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon
cooling and the essential oil can be easily separated.[1]
Botanischer Ursprung des Manukaöls
Die Art Südseemyrte (Leptospermum scoparium) gehört zur Gattung
Leptospermum in der Unterfamilie Leptospermoideae, welche in der
Familie der Myrtengewächse (Myrtaceae) in der Ordnung Myrtenartige
(Myrtales) steht. Beheimatet ist die Südseemyrte in den bergigen
Regionen von Neuseeland und dem südöstlichen Australien. Sie
wächst als immergrüner Strauch oder Baum und wird bis zu 4 m hoch.
Zweige und Blätter sind von feinen Haaren umhüllt und die Borke löst
sich leicht vom Stamm. Die Blätter haben entweder eine schmallanzettliche Form oder sind eiförmig. Sie werden zwischen 4 und 12
mm lang und zwischen 1 und 4 mm breit. Die Blätter sind sehr fest und
spitz zulaufend. Die Blüten sitzen in den Blattachseln und können weiß
oder rot-violett gefärbt sein. Die Südseemyrte entwickelt kleine holzige
Kapselfrüchte.[2]
Botanical origin of essential manuka oil
The species manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) belongs to the genus
Leptospermum in the subfamily Leptospermoideae which is in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), a member in the
order of Myrtales. The originally home of manuka is in the mountainous regions of New Zealand and
southeastern Australia. It grows as an evergreen shrub or tree and grows up to 4 m. Branches and leaves are

covered with fine hairs and the bark comes off easily from the stem. The leaves have either a narrow-lanceolate or
ovate shape. They are between 4 and 12 mm long and between 1 and 4 mm wide. The leaves are very firm and
pointed. The flowers grow in the leaf axils, and may be colored white or red-purple. Manuka develops small
woody seed capsules.[2]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Manukaöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, hellgelbe bis bräunliche Flüssigkeit. Es besitzt
einen süßlichen, würzig-erdigen Duft. Das ätherische Öl löst sich gut in Alkohol (Ethanol),
Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Ätherisches Manukaöl ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser.
Hauptbestandteile mit bis zu 50% sind Carbonsäureester mit einer durchschnittlichen Kohlenstoffanzahl von 10 Atomen. In geringerer Konzentration sind Sesquiterpene wie z. B. α- und β-Cadinen
sowie Limonen und Linalool enthalten.[3]
Characterisation
Essential manuka oil is a mobile, light yellow to brownish colored liquid. It has a characteristic sweet and
spicy-earthy scent. The essential oil is good soluble in alcohol (ethanol), vegetable oils and other essential oils.
Essential manuka oil is almost insoluble in water. Major compounds are carbon acid esters with an average
number of carbon atoms of 10. In lower concentrations are also included sesquiterpenes like α- und β-cadinene
as well as limonene and linalool.[3]
Verwendung in der Küche
Ätherisches Manukaöl wird im Allgemeinen nicht zur Zubereitung von Speisen und Getränken
verwendet. Bekannt ist der aus den Blüten gewonnene, wohlschmeckende Manukahonig, der in
verschiedenen Studien eine antibakterielle Wirkungen zeigt.[3]
Use in kitchen
Essential manuka oil is not generally used in the preparation of food and beverages. Known is the delicious
honey, derived from the flowers, which showed antibacterial effects in various studies.[3]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Manukaöl besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Die Maori benutzen Pflanzenteile von Manuka seit langer Zeit zur Behandlung von
Magen-Darm-Erkrankungen und Wunden. Neuere Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass ätherisches
Manukaöl eine starke Wirkung gegen Keime und Vieren besitzt. Es wirkt antibakteriell und
entzündungshemmend bei Infektionen der Haut und Stomatitis (Mundfäule). Zur Anwendung haben
sich Auftragungen des Öles auf die betroffenen Stellen, gurgeln und Ölbäder bewährt. Gegen
Candida albicans zeigt ätherisches Manukaöl eine ebenfalls starke anti-mykotische Wirkung, wenn es

als Auftragung oder Ölbad angewandt wird. Ätherisches Manukaöl wirkt auch hautregenerierend bei
Akne, Psoriasis (Schuppenflechte), Ekzemen, Ulzerationen und Dekubitus. Auch hier werden
Auftragungen und Ölbäder zur Anwendung empfohlen. Als weitere Einsatzgebiete sind allergischer
Juckreiz (Pruritus) und allergisch bedingter Heuschnupfen (Pollitis) bekannt. Durch Massagen und
Bäder mit ätherischem Manukaöl werden die antiallergischen (anti-histaminischen) Eigenschaften
genutzt.[3]
Ölmischung zur Schleimhautregeneration:
3 Tr. Palmarosaöl
3 Tr. Zedernholzöl
1 Tr. Manukaöl
50 mL Johanniskrautöl
Die ätherischen Öle werden im Johanniskrautöl gelöst. Die Schleimhäute im Analbereich werden nach
jedem Toilettengang mit dieser Mischung eingerieben.
Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential manuka oil have a number of health-related properties. The Maori uses plant parts
of manuka for a long time to treat gastrointestinal disorders and wounds. Recent studies have shown that
essential manuka oil has a strong effect against bacteria and viruses. It acts antibacterial and antiinflammatory in skin infections and stomatitis (mouth rot). To apply, ointment of the oil on the affected areas,
gargle, and oil baths have proven to be effective. Against Candida albicans, essential manuka oil shows a
likewise strong anti-fungal effect, if it is applied as an ointment or oil bath. Essential manuka oil also acts skin
regenerating for acne, psoriasis, eczema, ulcers and bedsores. Here, ointments and oil baths are recommended for
use as well. As further fields of application, allergic pruritus (itching) and allergic rhinitis-related disorders are
known. Through massages and baths with essential manuka oil, hypoallergenic (anti-histaminic) properties are
used.[3]

The essential oils are dissolved in the St. John's Wort oil. The mucous membranes in the anal area can be rubbed
after each toilet with this mixture.
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird ätherisches Manukaöl zur Beruhigung des Zentral-Nerven-Systems
eingesetzt. Es wirkt stark stabilisierend bei allgemeiner Nervosität, Übererregbarkeit, Reizüberflutung
und Unruhe. Als Anwendung werden Ölbäder, Massagen oder Einreibungen empfohlen.[3,4]

Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential manuka oil is used to calm the central nervous system. It has a strong stabilizing
effect on general nervousness, irritability, restlessness and overstimulation. As applications, oil baths, massages
or ointments are recommended.[3,4]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
In der Kosmetik wird das ätherische Manukaöl aufgrund seines stark krautigen Geruchs nur
gelegentlich für Kräuterkompositionen eingesetzt. Zudem ist es recht selten und daher entsprechend
teuer. Ätherisches Manukaöl eignet sich sehr gut für Mischungen mit Sandelholz, Rosenholz,
Bergamotte, Jasmin, Lavendel, Muskatellersalbei, Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Zedernholz und Zitrone.[1,3]
Use in Cosmetic
Due to its strong herbaceous smell, essential manuka oil only occasionally used in cosmetics for herbal
compositions. Moreover, it is quite rare and therefore expensive. Essential manuka oil is ideal for blending with
sandalwood, rosewood, bergamot, jasmine, lavender, clary sage, rose, ylang-ylang, cedar and lemon.[1,3]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Manukaöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich einzustufen.
Die Inhaltsstoffe Linalool und Limonen besitzen ein allergenes Potential. Ätherisches Manukaöl
eignet sich nicht für die Anwendung bei Babys, Kleinkindern und in der Schwangerschaft. Beachten
Sie auch die Hinweise im Sicherheitsdatenblatt und der Produktspezifikation.[3]
Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential manuka oil are classified as hazardous to health. Limonene and linalool
have an allergenic potential. Essential manuka oil is not suitable for use in babies, young children and during
pregnancy. Also note the reference in the material safety data sheet and the product specification.[3]
