Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Baldrianwurzelöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation der Wurzeln des echten
Baldrian (Valeriana officinalis) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer Wasserdampf als Trägerstoff für die leicht
flüchtigen organischen Bestandteile der Wurzel. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen
Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim Abkühlen eine spontane
Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann.[1]
Manufacturing method
The essential valerian root oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the root of common valerian (Valeriana
officinalis). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the root. Due to the non
miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and the essential oil
can be easily separated. [1]
Botanischer Ursprung des Baldrianwurzelöls
Die Art „echter Baldrian“ gehört zur Gattung der Baldriane
(Valeriana)
in
der
Unterfamilie
Baldriangewächse
(Valerianoideae) der Familie Geißblattgewächse (Caprifolicaeae),
die zur Ordnung Kardenartige (Dipsacales) gehört. Im Volksmund hat der echte Baldrian vielerlei Synonyme wie z. B.
Katzenkraut, Hexenkraut, Augenwurzel, Stinkwurz oder
Mondwurz. Der echte Baldrian kommt im gesamten europäischen Bereich (wobei Portugal eine Ausnahme bildet) und
Westasien vor. Baldrian ist bezüglich der Bodenbeschaffenheit recht anspruchslos und wird als mehrjährige
Pflanze bis zu 1.50 m hoch. Die Blätter werden bis zu 20 cm
lang, oval bis lanzettförmig, unpaarig gefiedert und
gegenständig angeordnet. Der Stängel ist hohl, unverzweigt
und gerippt. Von Juli bis August öffnen sich weiße bis
hellrosa Blüten, die an einer Trugdolde stehen. Der
Wurzelstock ist recht kurz, mit vielen dünnen, hellbraunen
Wurzeln.[2]

The species common valerian belongs to the genus Valeriana in the
subfamily Valerianoideae in the family Valerianaceae, which belongs to the order Dipsacales. Other names are

garden valerian, garden heliotrope and all-heal. Common valerian is native to the entire European area except
Portugal and to West Asia. Valerian is undemanding to soil conditions und grows as a perennial plant up to
1.50 m in height. The leaves are up to 20 cm in length, oval to narrow-leaved, unpaired pinnate and arrange
opposite to each other. The caulis is cupped, not branched and ripped. From July to August the plant carries
white to light pink blossoms, which stands in an umbel. The root stock is almost short with a lot of small, light
brown roots.[2]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Baldrianwurzelöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, gelb bis braune Flüssigkeit. Es besitzt
einen charakteristischen Duft, mit schweißartigen und an Moschus erinnernden Noten. Der
schweißartige Geruch ist auf das Vorkommen von Isovaleriansäure zurückzuführen. Das ätherische
Öl löst sich leicht in Alkohol (Ethanol, 1:0.5-2.5), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist
nahezu unlöslich in Wasser. Hauptbestandteile sind Camphen, Pinene und Bornylacetat. In Kontakt
mit Luftsauerstoff erhöht sich im Laufe der Zeit die Viskosität.[3]
Characterisation
The essential valerian root oil is an easily movable, yellow to brown liquid. It has a characteristic odour with
sweaty and musk like notes. The sweaty odour is due to the appearance of isovalerianic acid. The essential oil is
easily soluble in alcohol (ethanol, 1:0.5-2.5)), vegetable oils and other essential oils. It is almost not soluble in
water. Main compounds are camphene, pinenes and bornylacetate. In contact with oxygen, the viscosity is
increasing in time.[3]
Verwendung in der Küche
Das ätherische Baldrianwurzelöl kann zur Aromatisierung von Gebäck oder auch Speiseeis eingesetzt
werden. In geringer Konzentration kann ein Apfelgeschmack erzeugt werden. Das junge Grün und
die Blüten des Baldrians können wie Salat gegessen werden.[2]
Use in kitchen
Essential valerian root oil can be used to aromatize pastries or ice-cream. An apple flavour can be created using
low concentrations. The young leaves and the blossoms can be used like salad.[2]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Ätherisches Baldrianwurzelöl besitzt eine sedierende Wirkung auf den Organismus und wird daher
für eine Reihe von pflanzlich basierten Beruhigungsmitteln verwendet. Anwendungsgebiete sind
Unruhezustände und nervös bedingte Einschlafstörungen. Baldrianwurzelöl wirkt zudem
entkrampfend im Magen-Darmbereich und soll auch bei Migräne lindernd wirken. Homöopathische
Zubereitungen werden bei Erkrankungen des Zentralnervensystems, des Herzens und des MagenDarmtraktes eingesetzt.[5]
Medical use, phytotherapy
Essential valerian root oil has a sedative effect on the organism and is therefore used for a great amount of plant
based depressants. Fields of application are agitated melancholia and nervous based sleep disorders. Valerian root
oil acts anticonvulsant to the gastrointestinal tract and is palliative at migraine. Homeopathic formulations are
used at diseases of the central nervous system, the heart and gastrointestinal tract. [5]

Aromatherapie

Angstgefühlen eingesetzt, da es wie kaum ein anderes ätherisches Öl beruhigend wirkt. Beliebt ist
auch die Anwendung vor aufregenden Ereignissen wie z. B. Prüfungen. [4,5]
Aromatherapy
The essential valerian root oil is used to treat nervous situations like sleeping disorders or feelings of fear,
because it acts calming like almost no other essential oil. It can be used in advance of exciting occasions like
exams as well.[4,5]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
Ätherisches Baldrianwurzelöl wird trotz seines eher unangenehmen Geruchs in geringen
Konzentrationen für die Zusammenstellung von Parfümen als moschusartige, holzig-balsamische
Note verwendet. Es wird auch zur Parfümierung von Seifen und Badezusätzen eingesetzt. Letztere
haben dann auch gleich einen beruhigenden Effekt.[3]
Use in Cosmetic
Essential valerian root is used in low concentrations in perfumes to provide musk-like, woody-balsamic notes
despite of its unpleasant odour. Further applications are to fragrance soaps and bathing water additions. The
latter have a calmative effect.[3]

Das ätherische Baldrianwurzelöl kann allergische Hautreaktionen hervorrufen. Der Inhaltsstoff
Limonen besitzt ein allergenes Potential. Pinene können bei innerlicher Anwendung zu
Nierenreizungen führen. Bei Dauergebrauch kann es zu Gewöhnungseffekten und Abhängigkeiten
kommen. Ebenso sind das Auftreten von Lähmungserscheinungen, Seh- und Gehörstörungen
bekannt. Es gelten weiterhin die Hinweise des Sicherheitsdatenblattes.[2,3]
Application and warning notes, side effects
The essential valerian root oil can lead to allergic skin reactions. The compound limonene does have an allergic
potential. Pinenes can lead to kidney irritation if applied internal. If used regularly, addiction and obedience are
possible side effects. Paralysis, sight and auditory defects may occur as well. Please consider the safety notes of
