Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Nelkenblütenöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation der getrockneten und
zerkleinerten Blütenknospen des Gewürznelken-Baumes (Eugenia caryophyllus) gewonnen. Dabei dient
heißer Wasserdampf als Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen organischen Komponenten. Durch die
Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim
Abkühlen eine spontane Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden
kann. Die Ausbeute liegt zwischen 15 und 20%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
The essential clove flower oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the dried and grounded flower buds of
the clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllus). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds.
Due to the non miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and
the essential oil can be easily separated. The yield is between 15 and 20%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des ätherischen Nelkenblütenöls
Der Gewürznelken-Baum (Eugenia caryophyllus, Syzygium
aromaticum) ist eine Pflanze aus der Gattung Syzygium, die zur
Familie der Myrtengewächse (Myrtaceae) in der Ordnung der
Myrtenartigen (Myrtales) gehört. Ursprünglich beheimatet ist
der Gewürznelken-Baum auf den Gewürzinseln (Molukken).
Der Gewürznelken-Baum hat einen pyramidalen Wuchs und
erreicht Wuchshöhen von bis zu 20 Metern. Die Rinde ist glatt
und von gelblich-grauer Farbe. Die ledrigen Blätter stehen
gegenständig an einem ca. 3 cm langen Blattstiel. Die Blätter
sind etwa 8 cm lang und 3 cm breit, länglich elliptisch,
ganzrandig und glänzend grün. Die Blüten sind in
endständigen, dreifach-dreigabeligen Trugdolden angebracht.
Der Blütenboden besitzt eine große Anzahl an Öldrüsen. Aus
den Blüten entwickelt sich eine graubraune Beere, die einen
länglichen Samen enthält.[3]
Botanical origin of essential clove flower oil
The clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllus, Syzygium aromaticum) is a plant of the genus Syzygium, that belongs to
the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) in the order of Myrtales. Originally home of the clove tree is on the Spice Islands
(Moluccas). The clove tree has a pyramidal growth and reaches heights of up to 20 meters. The bark is smooth

and yellowish-gray in color. The leathery leaves are standing opposite on a 3 cm long petiole. The leaves are
about 8 cm long and 3 cm wide, oblong elliptic, entire and shiny green. The flowers are arranged in terminal,
triple three-forked cymes. The base of the flower has a large number of oil glands. From the flowers, a gray-brown
berry, which contains an elongated seed, is developed.[3]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Nelkenblütenöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, farblose bis gelbe Flüssigkeit, die das Licht
stark bricht. Im Laufe der Zeit oder in Kontakt mit eisenhaltigen Stoffen, färbt sich das ätherische
Nelkenblütenöl dunkel. Es besitzt einen charakteristisch würzig-süßen Duft. Das ätherische Öl löst
sich in sehr gut in Alkohol (1:2, 70% Ethanol), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen.
Ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser. Hauptbestandteil mit bis zu 90% ist
Eugenol. In geringeren Konzentrationen sind zusätzlich Eugenol-Derivate wie z. B. Eugenylacetat
oder Methyleugenol enthalten.[2,4]
Characterisation
Essential clove flower oil is a mobile, colourless to yellow coloured liquid, which refracts light strongly. Over
time or in contact with ferrous materials, the essential clove flower oil darkens. It has a characteristic spicysweet scent. The essential oil is good soluble in alcohol (1:2, 70% ethanol), vegetable oils and other essential oils.
Essential clove flower oil is almost insoluble in water. Major compound with content up to 90% is eugenol.
Other eugenol derivatives, like eugenyl acetate or methyl eugenol, are included in lower concentrations.[4]
Verwendung in der Küche
Ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl wird aufgrund seines intensiven Geschmacks und Duftes im
Allgemeinen nicht zur Zubereitung von Speisen und Getränken verwendet. Es dient aber sehr wohl
als Aromastoff bei der Produktion von Backwaren, Pökelfleisch, Büchsenfleisch, Würzmischungen
und Tabakwaren. Sehr bekannt ist die Verwendung von Gewürznelken in Weihnachtsspezialitäten
wie z. B. Glühwein.[2,3]
Use in kitchen
Essential clove flower oil is generally not used for food preparation and beverages due to its intense flavor and
aroma. But it serves very well as a flavoring in the production of baked goods, cured meats, canned meat, mixed
spices and tobacco. Well known is the use of cloves in Christmas specialties, such as mulled wine.[2,3]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Nelkenblütenöls besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Die Verwendung von Gewürznelken zur medizinischen Behandlung ist bereits in der
frühen ayurvedischen und chinesischen Medizin beschrieben. Neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass
ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl eines der stärksten antibakteriell und analgetisch wirksamen ätherischen
Öle ist. Es wirkt antiinfektiös und antibakteriell mit einem sehr breiten Spektrum an möglich

Anwendungen. Zahn- und Zahnfleischinfektionen können durch Einpinseln der betroffenen Stellen
mit ätherischem Nelkenblütenöl gleichzeitig gegen die Infektion und den Schmerz behandelt
werden. Ebenso kann es bei Akne, bakterieller Kolitis, Amöbenenteritis oder sogar Tuberkulose
eingesetzt werden. Hier werden die Einreibung der betroffenen Stellen, des Bauches bzw. des
Brustbereiches empfohlen. Ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl wirkt zusätzlich auch gegen Viren und kann
bei Infektionen der Atemwege (Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Influenza, Tonsillitis) und oder innerer Organe
(Hepatitis, virale Enterokolitiden, virale Nephritis) eingesetzt werden. Zur Anwendung werden die
Inhalation, Einreibungen oder Ölbäder empfohlen. Auch Pilze wie z. B. Candida-Arten werden durch
ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl wirksam bekämpft. Es wirkt zusätzlich auch antiparasitär gegen
Hautparasiten.[4]

Die ätherischen Öle werden im Johanniskrautöl gelöst. Mit dieser Mischung wird der schmerzende
Bereich mehrmals täglich eingerieben.
Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential clove flower oil have a number of health-related properties. The use of cloves for
medical treatment is described in the early Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Recent studies have shown that
essential clove flower oil is one of the most powerful antibacterial and analgesic essential oils. It is antiinfectious and anti-bacterial with a very wide range of possible applications. Tooth and gum infections can be
treated simultaneously against the infection and the pain by brushing essential clove flower oil on the affected
areas. It can also be used for acne, bacterial colitis or even tuberculosis. Here, rubbing of the affected area, the
abdomen or the chest area are recommended for application. Essential clove flower oil also acts against viruses
and can be used for respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, bronchitis, influenza, tonsillitis) and internal organs
infections (hepatitis, viral enterocolitis, viral nephritis). For application, inhalation, ointments or oil baths are
recommended. Also fungi such as Candida species are effectively controlled by essential clove flower oil. It also
has an additional antiparasitic effect against skin parasites.[4]

Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie gilt ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl als starkes Stimulanz und kann bei physischer
und psychischer Schwäche (Asthenie) und starker Müdigkeit zur Anregung des gesamt Organismus
und zur Konzentrationssteigerung eingesetzt werden. Als Anwendung für ätherisches
Nelkenblütenöl werden Ölbäder, Einreibungen, Massagen oder der Einsatz in der Duftlampe
empfohlen.[4,5]
Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential clove flower oil is considered a potent stimulant and can be used in physical and
mental weakness (asthenia), and increased fatigue to excite the whole organism and to increase concentration. As
applications for essential clove flower oil, oil baths, ointments, massages, or the use of fragrance lamp is
recommended.[4,5]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
In der Kosmetik wird das ätherische Nelkenblütenöl aufgrund seines süß-würzigen Duftes vielseitig
für blumige Phantasie-Noten, orientalische Düfte und Herren-Parfums eingesetzt. Ätherisches
Nelkenblütenöl eignet sich sehr gut für Mischungen mit Bergamotte, Lavandin, Lavendel,
Lemongras, Lorbeer, Mandarine, Muskatellersalbei, Rose, Rosengeranie, Rosmarin, Vanille, YlangYlang und Zitrone.[2,4]
Use in Cosmetic
In cosmetics, essential clove flower oil is used very versatile for floral fantasy notes, oriental fragrances and
men's fragrances, due to its sweet-spicy fragrance. Essential clove flower oil is ideal for blending with
bergamot, lavandin, lavender, lemon grass, bay leaf, mandarin, clary sage, rose, geranium, rosemary, vanilla,
ylang-ylang and lemon.[2,4]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Nelkenblütenöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich
einzustufen. Ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl kann bei empfindlichen Personen Haut- und
Schleimhautreizungen sowie Dermatitis verursachen. Eugenol ist bei oraler Zufuhr giftig und wirkt
im Tierversuch hautreizend, karzinogen und mutagen. Eugenol besitzt ein allergenes Potential.
Ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl eignet sich nicht für die innere und äußere Anwendung bei Babys,
Kleinkindern und in der Schwangerschaft. Ätherisches Nelkenblütenöl soll nicht bei
Blutgerinnungsstörungen sowie der Gabe von Heparin und Aspirin angewandt werden. Beachten Sie

Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential clove flower oil are classified as hazardous to health. Essential clove
flower oil can cause skin and mucous membrane irritation and dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Eugenol is
toxic by oral intake, is skin irritant and shows carcinogenic and mutagenic effects in animal testing. Eugenol has
an allergenic potential. Essential clove flower oil is not suitable for internal and external use in babies, young
children and during pregnancy. Essential clove flower oil should not be used in blood clotting disorders as
well as during the intake of heparin and aspirin. Also note the reference in the material safety data sheet and the
product specification.[4]
