Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Krauseminzöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation des frischen oder leicht
getrockneten, blühenden Krautes der Krauseminze (Mentha spicata) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer
Wasserdampf als Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen organischen Komponenten der Pflanze. Durch
die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet
beim Abkühlen eine spontane Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden
werden kann. Die Ausbeute beträgt bis zu 0.7%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
The essential spearmint oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the fresh or dried, flowering herb of
spearmint (Mentha spicata). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the plant.
Due to the non miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and
the essential oil can be easily separated. The yield is up to 0.7%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des Krauseminzöl
Die Art Krauseminze (Mentha spicata) gehört zur
Gattung
Minzen
(Mentha,
Untertribus
Menthinae,
Tribus Menthaeae) in der Familie der Lippenblütler
(Lamiaceae), die zur Ordnung der Lippenblütlerartigen
(Lamiales) zählt. Die Krauseminze wird auch als grüne
Minze, Speer-Minze oder Ährige Minze bezeichnet.
Ursprünglich stammt die Krauseminze
aus den
Regionen Mitteleuropas und Mittelasiens bis nach
China und wird heute weltweit kultiviert. Krauseminze ist eine ausdauernde, krautige Pflanze, die
zwischen 30 und 130 cm hoch werden kann. Die ganze
Pflanze hat einen angenehmen, typischen Geruch. An
den

sind eiförmig-lanzettlich oder schmal-lanzettlich geformt, am Rand unregelmäßig gesägt und an der
Spitze zulaufend. Die Krauseminze blüht zwischen Juli und September. [3]
Botanical origin of essential spearmint oil
The species spearmint (Mentha spicata) belongs to the genus mints (Mentha, subtribes Menthinae, Tribe
Menthaeae) in the mint family (Lamiaceae), which belongs to the order of Lamiales. Originally, the spearmint
comes from the regions of Central Europe and Central Asia up to China and is now cultivated worldwide.
Spearmint is a perennial, herbaceous plant that can be 30 to 130 cm high. The whole plant has a pleasant odor.
On the upright, four-sided stems the leaves are arranged opposite. At the base of the leaf blade are sitting oil
glands. The leave is between 2 and 7 cm long and 0.5 to 2 cm wide. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate or narrowlanceolate shaped, the edge irregularly cut and tapered at the top. The mint blooms from July to September.[3]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Krauseminzöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, farblose bis gelbliche Flüssigkeit. Es besitzt
einen frisch-kühlen Geruch, mit Kümmel-Noten. Das ätherische Krauseminzöl löst sich sehr gut in
Alkohol (1:1.5, Ethanol 80%), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist nahezu unlöslich in
Wasser. Hauptbestandteil ist (-)-Carvon. In geringerer Konzentration sind Limonen und Linalool
enthalten.[1,2]
Characterisation
Essential spearmint oil is a mobile, colourless to light yellow coloured liquid. It has a fresh-cool scent, with
caraway notes. Essential spearmint oil is very good soluble in alcohol (1:1.5, ethanol 80%), vegetable oils and
other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. Major compound is (-)-carvone. Limonene und linalool are
included in lower concentrations.[1,2]
Verwendung in der Küche
Ätherisches Krauseminzöl wird im Allgemeinen nicht zur Zubereitung von Speisen und Getränken
verwendet. Es wird jedoch von der Industrie zur Aromatisierung von Süßwaren (Kaugummi,
Bonbons), alkoholischen Getränken (Minzliköre) und als Komponente in Gewürzmischungen
verwendet.[2]

Use in kitchen
Essential spearmint oil is not generally used in the preparation of food and drink. However, it is used by the
industry to flavor candy (chewing gum), alcoholic beverages (mint liquors) and as a component in spice
mixtures. [2]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Krauseminzöls besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Als ein nicht kühlendes ätherisches Öl eignet sich Krauseminzöl zur Behandlung von
Erkältungskrankheiten. Es wirkt bei akuter und chronischer Bronchitis sowie Katarrhen mukolytisch
(schleimlösend), wenn es zur Inhalation, als Einreibung, Auflage oder Ölbad eingesetzt wird. Zudem
wirkt das ätherische Krauseminzöl verdauungsfördernd und erleichtert den Gallenfluss. Es kann
daher bei Gastritis, Übelkeit und Gallenbeschwerden als Bauchmassage, Auflage, Wickel oder Ölbad
eingesetzt werden. Bei Narben und Wunden kann ätherisches Krauseminzöl durch seine
epithelisierende Eigenschaft die Wundheilung fördern, wenn es als Auflage, Massageöl oder Ölbad
eingesetzt wird. Bei auftretendem Juckreiz (Pruritus) kann das ätherische Krauseminzöl als
Einreibung oder Ölbad genutzt werden und verhindert Entzündungen der betroffenen Bereiche. [4]

Die ätherischen Öle werden im Mandelöl gelöst. Mit dieser Mischung wird der Bauch des Kindes
sanft massiert und mit einem warmen Tuch eingewickelt.
Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential spearmint oil have a number of health-related properties. As a non-cooling
essential oil, spearmint oil is suitable for the treatment of colds. It is effective mucolytically (expectorant) for
acute and chronic bronchitis and catarrh, if it is inhaled, used as an ointment, pad or oil bath. Moreover, the
essential spearmint oil acts promoting on digestion and facilitates the flow of bile. It can therefore be used for
gastritis, nausea and biliousness as abdominal massage, pad, wrap or oil bath. With scars and wounds, essential
spearmint oil can be used for its property of epithelialization to promote wound healing when it is used as a

pad, massage oil or oil bath. With occurring itching (pruritus), essential spearmint oil can be used as an
ointment or oil bath to prevent inflammation of the affected areas.[4]
Oil mixture for the relief of digestive problems in children:

The essential oils are dissolved in almond oil. With this mixture, the belly of the child is gently massaged and
wrapped in a warm towel.
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird ätherisches Krauseminzöl aufgrund seiner ausgleichenden, beruhigenden
und abregenden Wirkung geschätzt. Bei geistiger und körperlicher Erschöpfung, stressbedingten
Beschwerden und allgemeiner Anspannung kann ätherisches Krauseminzöl als Raumduft,
Massageöl, Ölbad oder als Riechfläschchen angewandt werden. Auch bei Gedächtnisschwäche und
fehlender Konzentration kann ätherisches Krauseminzöl eingesetzt werden.[4,5]
Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential spearmint oil is appreciated for its balancing, soothing and de-exciting effect. For
mental and physical exhaustion, stress-related symptoms and general stress essential spearmint oil can be
applied as a room scent, massage oil, oil bath or as vinaigrettes. Even with poor memory and lack of
concentration, essential spearmint oil can be used.[4,5]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
In der Kosmetik wird das ätherische Krauseminzöl in Kombination mit grünen, Lavendel-, Jasmin
und Fougère-Noten verwendet. Besonders maskuline Duftkompositionen bekommen dadurch eine
frische Note. Der Großteil der weltweiten Produktion wird jedoch zur Herstellung von
Mundpflegemitteln wie Zahnpasta oder Mundwasser eingesetzt. Es ist auch Bestandteil von Sportund Massageölen und vieler Saunaaufguss-Mischungen. Ätherisches Krauseminzöl eignet sich gut
für Mischungen mit Basilikum, Eukalyptus, Grapefruit, Jasmin, Lavandin, Lavendel, Mandarine,
Rosmarin, Weißtanne, Ylang-Ylang und Zypresse.[2,4]

Use in Cosmetic
In cosmetics, the essential spearmint oil is used in combination with green, lavender, jasmine and fougere
notes. Particularly masculine fragrances get a fresh note. The majority of global production is used for the
production of oral hygiene products such as toothpaste or mouthwash. It is also part of sports and massage oils
and many sauna blends. Essential spearmint oil works well for mixtures with basil, eucalyptus, grapefruit,
jasmine, lavandin, lavender, mandarin, rosemary, white pine, ylang-ylang and cypress.[2,4]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Krauseminzöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich
einzustufen. Carvon, Limonen und Linalool besitzen ein allergenes Potential. Ätherisches
Krauseminzöl eignet sich nicht für die innere Anwendung bei Schwangeren, Säuglingen und
Kleinkindern. Bei äußerer Anwendung bei Kleinkindern und Säuglingen sollte die Konzentration
kleiner als 0.5% sein. Beachten Sie auch die Hinweise im Sicherheitsdatenblatt und der
Produktspezifikation.[2,4]
Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential spearmint oil are classified as hazardous to health. Carvone, limonene and
linalool have an allergenic potential. Essential spearmint oil is not suitable for internal use in pregnant
women, infants and young children. When applied externally in young children and infants, the concentration
should be less than 0.5%Also note the reference in the material safety data sheet and the product specification.[2,4]
