Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation des Weihrauchgummi-Harzes des indischen Weihrauchbaumes (Boswellia serrata) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer
Wasserdampf als Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen organischen Komponenten. Durch die NichtMischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim
Abkühlen eine spontane Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden
kann. Die Ausbeute an ätherischem Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) liegt zwischen 5 und 10%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
The essential olibanum oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the resin of the Indian olibanum tree
(Boswellia serrata). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds. Due to the non
miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and the essential oil
can be easily separated. The yield of essential olibanum oil is between 5 and 10%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des ätherischen Olibanumöls
(Weihrauchöls)
Der indische Weihrauchbaum (Boswellia serrata) ist eine
Pflanze aus der Gattung Weihrauch (Boswellia), die zur
Familie der Balsambaumgewächse (Burseraceae) in der
Ordnung der Seifenbaumartige (Sapindales) gehört. Der
indische
Weihrauchbaum wird auch als Salaibaum,
Salphalbaum oder Sabalbaum bezeichnet. Ursprünglich
stammt der Weihrauchbaum aus den trockenen, bergigen
Gebieten Indiens. Der Weihrauchbaum bildet eine flach
ausgebreitete Krone aus und wird je nach Bedingungen
zwischen 2 und 8 m hoch. Die Blätter sind 9- bis 14-fach
paarig gefiedert, wobei die einzelnen Fiedern am Rand kerbig
gesägt sind. Die grünlich-graue Rinde löst sich papierartig
vom Stamm. Bei Verletzung sondert der indische
Weihrauchbaum ein Gummiharz ab, welches an der Luft
schnell aushärtet.[3]
Botanical origin of essential olibanum oil
The olibanum tree (Boswellia serrata) is a plant of the genus Boswellia, that belongs to the Burseraceae family in
the order of Sapindales. Originally, the olibanum tree comes from the dry mountainous areas of India. The
olibanum tree forms a flat spreading crown and reaches heights between 2 and 8 m depending on the conditions.

The leaves are 9- to 14-times pinnate, with the individual leaflets are cut at the edge. The greenish-gray bark
peels off like paper from the tree trunk. In case of wounding, the Indian olibanum tree exudes a gum resin that
hardens quickly in the air.[3]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) ist eine leicht viskose, gelbliche Flüssigkeit. Es besitzt
einen charakteristischen, holzig-balsamischen Duft mit leichter Zitrusnote. Das ätherische Öl löst sich
in Alkohol (1:6, 90% Ethanol), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Ätherisches Olibanumöl
(Weihrauchöl) ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser. Hauptbestandteile sind Pinen-Isomere und Limonen.
1,8-Cineol und -Thujen sind in geringerer Konzentration vorhanden. [2,4]
Characterisation
Essential olibanum oil is a slightly viscous, yellowish colored liquid. It has a characteristic, woody-balsamic
scent with a slightly lemon notes. The essential oil is soluble in alcohol (1:6, 90% ethanol), vegetable oils and
other essential oils. Essential olibanum oil is almost insoluble in water. Major compounds are pinenes and
limonene. -Thyjene and 1,8-cineol are included in lower concentrations.[2,4]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Olibanumöls (Weihrauchöls) besitzen eine Reihe von
gesundheitlich relevanten Eigenschaften. Die Verwendung von Olibanum bzw. Weihrauch ist bereits
seit über 5000 Jahren dokumentiert. In den Anfängen der Medizin war die Heilkunst immer mit der
Religion verbunden, daher findet sich Olibanum bzw. Weihrauch auch immer sowohl liturgisch als
auch medizinisch in den entsprechenden Epochen. Neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass ätherisches
Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) eine starke schleimlösende Wirkung besitzt. Bei Bronchitis und Asthma
bronchiale kann es als Einreibung, Auflage, Ölbad oder zur Inhalation genutzt werden. Zudem wirkt
ätherisches Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) auch Anregend auf die Neubildung von Haut bei Wunden
und Narben. Es kann auch zur Stimulierung des Immunsystems eingesetzt werden. Dazu werden
Einreibungen der Lendenwirbelsäule empfohlen. Bei entzündlichen Erkrankungen wie z. B. Arthritis,
rheumatischer Arthrose und Sportverletzungen können Massagen und Ölbäder mit ätherischem
Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) angewandt werden.[4]

Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential olibanum oil have a number of health-related properties. The use of olibanum and
frankincense has been documented for over 5000 years. In the early days of medicine, the healing arts has always
been connected with religion, therefore, olibanum or frankincense is always both liturgically and medically in the
corresponding periods. Recent studies have shown that essential olibanum oil has a strong expectorant action.
In bronchitis and asthma, it can be used as an ointment, pad, oil bath or for inhalation. Also essential olibanum
oil acts stimulating on the formation of new skin with wounds and scars. It can also be used to stimulate the
immune system. Therefore, rubbing of the lumbar spine is recommended. In inflammatory diseases such as
arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and sports injuries massages and oil baths with essential olibanum oil can be
applied.[4]
Oil mixture for daily skin care and prevention of wrinkles:
5 dr. petitgrain oil
2 dr. olibanum oil
2 dr. lavender oil
2 dr. rosewood oil
50 mL almond oil
2 dr. sea buckthorn oil
The essential oils are dissolved in the fatty oils. After cleansing in the morning and evening, the mixture is
applied to the skin.
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird ätherisches Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) als Antidepressivum, vor allem
für nervlich bedingte Depressionen, genutzt. Als Anwendung werden die Duftlampe, Ölbäder und
der Zusatz von ätherischem Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) zu Massageölen empfohlen. Zudem wirkt
ätherisches Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) beruhigend bei Erschöpfung, Stress, allgemeiner Angst,
nervöser Anspannung und Alpträumen.[4,5]
Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential olibanum oil is used as an antidepressant, particularly for nervous depressions. As
application, use of the incense burner, oil baths and the addition of essential olibanum oil to massage oil
mixtures are recommended. Also, essential olibanum oil soothes fatigue, stress, generalized anxiety, nervous
tension and nightmares.[4,5]
Verwendung in der Küche
Ätherisches Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) wird im Allgemeinen nicht zur Zubereitung von Speisen und
Getränken verwendet.[2]

In der Kosmetik wird das ätherische Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) als Kopfnote für grüne und holzige
Noten eingesetzt. Insbesondere orientalische Noten sowie Chypre-, Ambra-, Juchten- und
Phantasienoten werden unter Zusatz von ätherischem Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) komponiert.
Ätherisches Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) eignet sich sehr gut für Mischungen mit Basilikum,
Bergamotte, Cassia, Geranie, Jasmin, Kampfer, Lavendel, Neroli, Orange, Palmarosa, Pfeffer, Pinie,
Rose, Sandelholz, Vetiver und Zimt.[2,4]
Use in Cosmetic
In cosmetics, essential olibanum oil is used as a top note of green and woody notes. In particular, oriental and
chypre notes, amber, Russian leather and fancy notes are composed with the addition of essential olibanum oil.
Essential olibanum oil is very well suited for blends with basil, bergamot, cassia, geranium, jasmine, camphor,
lavender, neroli, orange, palmarosa, pepper, pine, rose, sandalwood, vetiver and cinnamon.[2,4]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) sind als gesundheitlich
bedenklich einzustufen. Die enthaltenen Pinene können bei dermaler Anwendung bei empfindlichen
Personen zu Hautreizungen und Ekzemen führen, bei oraler Aufnahme sind Nierenreizungen
möglich. 1,8-Cineol verursacht bei oraler Aufnahme größerer Mengen Gastroenteritis und
Nierenreizungen, dermal können bei empfindlichen Personen Hautreizungen auftreten. Limonen hat
ein allergenes Potential. Ätherisches Olibanumöl (Weihrauchöl) eignet sich nicht für die innere und
äußere Anwendung bei Babys, Kleinkindern und in der Schwangerschaft. Beachten Sie auch die
Hinweise im Sicherheitsdatenblatt und der Produktspezifikation.[4]
Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential olibanum oil are classified as hazardous to health. Contained pinenes can
lead to skin irritation and eczema on dermal application in susceptible individuals, when taken orally, kidney
irritations are possible. 1,8-cineole might cause gastroenteritis and kidney irritation by oral intake of larger
amounts, dermal irritation in sensitive individuals may occur. Limonene has an allergic potential. Essential
olibanum oil is not suitable for internal and external use in babies, young children and during pregnancy. Also
note the reference in the material safety data sheet and the product specification.[4]
