Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Pfefferminzöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation des frischen oder leicht
getrockneten Krauts der Pfefferminze (Mentha piperita) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer Wasserdampf
als Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen organischen Komponenten. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der
organischen Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim Abkühlen eine spontane
Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann. Die Ausbeute liegt
zwischen 0.1 und 1.0%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
The essential peppermint oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the fresh or slightly dried herb of the
peppermint (Mentha piperita). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds. Due to
the non miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and the
essential oil can be easily separated. The yield is between 0.1 and 1.0%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des Pfefferminzöls
Die Art Pfefferminze (Mentha piperita) steht in der Gattung der
Minzen (Mentha, Unterfamilie: Nepetoideae) in der Familie der
Lippenblütler (Lamiaceae), welche zur Ordnung der
Lippenblütlerartigen (Lamiales) gehört. Wildwachsende
Verwandte der Pfefferminze finden sich in ganz Europa, die
Pfefferminze ist dabei aber eine ausgesprochene Kulturpflanze.
Die Pfefferminze ist eine mehrjährige, krautige Pflanze. Sie
wird bis zu 90 cm hoch und besitzt einen Stängel mit
quadratischem Querschnitt. Die spitz gestielten Blätter sind
gegenständig, schmal eiförmig bis lanzettlich und haben einen
gesägten Rand. Beim Zerreiben duften die Blätter
charakteristisch. Die Blätter sind an der Unterseite heller
gefärbt als auf der Oberseite. Die violett bis rosa gefärbten
Blüten sitzen gestielt in den Achseln der Tragblätter und bilden
so genannte Scheinähren. Blütezeit ist zwischen Juli und
September.[3]

be found throughout Europe, the peppermint is a definite crop. Peppermint is a perennial herbaceous plant. It
grows up to 90 cm high and is having a stem with square cross-section. The pointed, stalked leaves are opposite,
narrowly ovate to lanceolate and have a serrated edge. When crushed, the leaves smell characteristic. The sheets
are more brightly colored at the bottom than on the top. The purple to pink colored flowers are stalked in the axils
of bracts and form so-called apparent ears. Bloom time is from July to September.[3]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Pfefferminzöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, farblose bis gelblich-grüne Flüssigkeit. Es hat
einen starken, kühlen und charakteristisch minzigen Duft. Das ätherische Öl löst sich gut in Alkohol
(1:5, Ethanol 70%), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser.
Hauptbestandteil des ätherischen Pfefferminzöls ist Menthol. Menthon, Menthylacetat, Menthofuran,
Pulegon, Limonen, Caryophyllen-Isomere und Pinen-Isomere sind in geringeren Konzentrationen
vorhanden.[2]
Characterisation
The essential peppermint oil is an easily movable, colourless to yellowish-green liquid. It has a strong, cool,
characteristic minty fragrance. The essential oil is readily soluble in alcohol (1:5, ethanol 70%), vegetable oils
and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. Main component of essential peppermint oil is menthol.
Menthone, menthyl acetate, menthofuran, pulegones, limonene, caryophyllenes and pinenes are present in
significant concentrations.[2]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Pfefferminzöls besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Pfefferminze ist seit langer Zeit als Heilpflanze bekannt und gehört zu den
bekanntesten Hausmitteln. Neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass ätherisches Pfefferminzöl starke
bakterizide, viruzide, fungizide, vermizide und antiinfektiöse Wirkungen besitzt. Es kann daher z. B.
bei Hepatitis, Herpes, Zystitis, Prostatitis und Nierenkoliken eingesetzt werden. Zur Anwendung von
ätherischem Pfefferminzöl werden die direkte Auftragung auf die betreffenden Bereiche und Ölbäder
empfohlen. Zugleich wirkt ätherisches Pfefferminzöl tonisierend und stimulierend im
Verdauungstrakt. Bei Pankreas- und Leberbeschwerden, Dyspepsie, Übelkeit oder Erbrechen kann es

ebenso innerlich eingesetzt werden, wie auch als Ölbad. Eine weitere wichtige Wirkung von
ätherischem Pfefferminzöl richtet sich gegen Spannungskopfschmerzen. Zusätzlich wirkt es
schleimlösend bei Inhalation oder Anwendung als Ölbad und kann bei Erkältungskrankheiten
eingesetzt werden. Außerdem fördert es die Wundheilung und kann bei kleineren Wunden direkt
aufgetragen werden.[4,5]
Ölmischung zur Einreibung bei Sinusitis:
3 Tr. Pfefferminzöl
3 Tr. Eukalyptusöl
3 Tr. Lavendelöl
2 Tr. Kamilleöl blau
5 Tr. Ravintsaraöl
Die ätherischen Öle werden in 25 mL Mandelöl gelöst. Mehrmals täglich werden die Schläfen, Stirn
und Nase eingerieben.
Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential peppermint oil have a number of health-related properties. Peppermint has long
been known as a medicinal plant and is one of the most popular home remedies. Recent studies have shown that
essential peppermint oil has strong bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, vermicides and anti-infectious effects. It
can therefore be used, for example, with hepatitis, herpes, cystitis, prostatitis, and renal colic. For the application
of essential peppermint oil, the direct application to the areas concerned and oil baths are recommended.
Essential peppermint oil also has a tonic and stimulant effect in the digestive tract. In pancreatic and liver
disorders, dyspepsia, nausea, or vomiting it may also be used internally, as well as oil bath. Another important
effect of essential peppermint oil is directed against tension headaches. In addition, it is an expectorant when
inhaled or used as oil bath and can be used for colds. It also promotes the healing of wounds and may be applied
directly for small wounds.[4,5]
Oil mixture for rubbing with sinusitis:
3 dr. peppermint oil
3 dr. eucalyptus oil
3 dr. lavender oil
2 dr. chamomile oil blue
5 dr. ravintsara oil
The essential oils are dissolved in 25 mL of almond oil. The temples, forehead and nose are rubbed several times a
day.
Aromatherapie
Ätherisches Pfefferminzöl wird in der Aromatherapie aufgrund seiner stimulierenden und
tonisierenden Eigenschaften bei neurovegetativer Dystonie (Bewegungsstörungen) und Asthenie
(allgemeine Schwäche) eingesetzt. Zur Anwendung von ätherischem Pfefferminzöl werden Ölbäder,
die Verwendung als Massageöl oder die Duftlampe empfohlen. Der Duft wirkt erfrischend auf die
Raumluft.[4,5]

Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential peppermint oil is used in neuro-vegetative dystonia (movement disorder), and
asthenia (general weakness) due to its stimulating and toning properties. For the application of essential
peppermint oil, use as massage oil, as oil bath, or in the fragrance lamp are recommended. The scent is
refreshing on the air.[4,5]
Verwendung in der Küche
Das ätherische Pfefferminzöl wird aufgrund seines sehr intensiven Geruchs und Geschmacks im
Allgemeinen nicht zur Zubereitung von Speisen und Getränken verwendet. Sehr wohl dient das
ätherische Pfefferminzöl als Aroma zur kommerziellen Herstellung von Süßwaren, alkoholischen
und nichtalkoholischen Getränken und als Gewürz. Das getrocknete Kraut wird als Teedroge bei
Magen-Darm-Beschwerden verwendet.[2,3]
Use in kitchen
Essential peppermint oil is generally not used for the preparation of food and beverages due to its intensive
smell and flavor. Very probably is the use of essential peppermint oil as a flavoring for commercial production
of confectionery, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and as a spice. The dried herb is used as a tea-drug for
gastrointestinal complaints.[2,3]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
Das ätherische Pfefferminzöl wird hauptsächlich zur Parfümierung von Pflegeprodukte wie z. B.
Zahnpasta, Seifen oder Toilettenartikeln verwendet. Ätherisches Pfefferminzöl eignet sich sehr gut
für Mischungen mit Benzoe, Bergamotte, Lavendel, Majoran, Mandarine, Myrrhe, Orange, Rose,
Rosmarin, Teebaum, Thymian rot, Zedernholz und Zitrone. [2,4]
Use in Cosmetic
The essential peppermint oil is used mainly for perfuming care products such as toothpaste, soaps or toiletries.
Essential peppermint oil is suitable for mixtures with benzoin, bergamot, lavender, marjoram, mandarin,
myrrh, orange, rose, rosemary, tea tree, thyme, red, cedar and lemon.[2,4]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Pfefferminzöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich einzustufen.
Ätherisches Pfefferminzöl kann zu Hautreizungen führen. Die Aufnahme größerer Mengen Menthol
kann zu rauschartigen Zuständen führen. Menthol steigert den Blutdruck und regt die Gallentätigkeit
an. Pinen-Isomere können bei dermaler Anwendung bei empfindlichen Personen zu Hautreizungen
und Ekzemen führen, bei oraler Aufnahme sind Nierenreizungen möglich. Menthol und Limonen
haben ein allergenes Potential. Ätherisches Pfefferminzöl eignet sich nicht für die innere und äußere
Anwendung bei Schwangeren, Säuglingen und Kleinkindern. Beachten Sie auch die Hinweise im

Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential peppermint oil are categorized as harmful to health. Essential peppermint
oil can cause skin irritation. The intake of larger amounts of menthol may lead to intoxication. Menthol raises
blood pressure and stimulates the gall activity. When applied dermal, pinene isomers can lead to skin irritation
and eczema in susceptible individuals, when taken orally, kidney irritations are possible. Menthol and limonene

have an allergenic potential. Essential peppermint oil is not suitable for internal and external use in pregnant
women, infants and young children. Also note the reference in the material safety data sheet and the product
specification.[2,4]

Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) and are enforced by the IFRA Scientific Committee.
