East End turning into rubbish dump
Rustenburg – “East End is turning into a rubbish dump and it looks as if the Rustenburg
Municipality does not even care.” This is the
opinion of residents of this neighbourhood.

Crime Combating Forum, a community forum
aimed at being the eyes and ears of the public
and the police as far as crime and community
issues are concerned, brought several of these
eye sores to Platinum Weekly’s attention.
At the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Molen
Streets a rubbish dump is growing at an alarm-
ing rate, he said. Platinum Weekly took photographs of this malodorous heap as well as the
area under the bridge which is being turned
into a community bedroom by the homeless,
with mattresses and all.
At Bobbies Rugby Club (on the corner of Kruger and Heefer Streets), a rubbish dump is
growing under the trees. While the grass on
the sidewalks have been cut, the corner area
is overgrown with the grass growing hip height.
“This,” Kobus said, “offers an excellent hidingplace for criminal elements wanting to check
out nearby residences.”
Possibly the most alarming of all is the shack
which was built in an open area on the corner of Tuin and Heefer Streets by an informal
waste collector. According to Kobus, the man
has been living there since last year. He collects rubbish to sell for recycling and everything he discards, is left outside the shack.
At some of these so-called rubbish dumps
people burn old tyres to get to the steel wire
inside, adding to the nauseating smell which is
overwhelming in certain areas.
