A.Y. JACKSON S.S. WEEKLY REVIEW
Friday, Oct. 24th, 2014
On behalf of the school community, we extend our support and condolences to all those affected by
the events on Parliament Hill. It was a difficult day for our community. At the school, our first priority is always the safety of our students and staff. When we encounter situations of risk, we implement
appropriate safety measures to secure the school and we make every effort to maintain a calm and safe
learning environment.
In response to this incident, our school moved to a “Shelter In Place“ status, which means regular activity continued within the school, but all exterior doors and windows were locked, and students were
kept inside at lunch and recess.
In emergency situations, we receive communications support from the school district. This allows
school staff to stay focused on school needs and ensures consistent and timely messaging to the community. Information was provided to parents through the media, social media (Twitter and Facebook),
our district website (ocdsb.ca), our school website (www.ayj.ca) and direct phone calls and a synrevocie email to parents. At times like this, we are reminded of the importance of having up-to-date emergency contact information for all parents. Please ensure that your contact information is up to date.
As we resume regular operations, we will be keeping a close eye on student and staff well-being. We
know that children may be confused by what they have heard about what has happened in our city.
Most likely they will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school
personnel can help children cope by listening, acknowledging and validating feelings and by being
reassuring. At the school, we will provide resources and supports to students as required.
Some of you might have heard about the lockdown that took place at Hazeldean Mall yesterday. We
heard about it minutes before the end of the school day. We contacted police who assured us that they
had investigated a possible threat and concluded that it was safe for our students to leave our building.
We did ask our students to avoid going to the Mall while the police finished their investigation.
If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school. We appreciate your ongoing support.

If you have any additional questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
Due to recent events, the University Information Program scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22nd, was
rescheduled to Friday, Oct. 24th from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Although many parents could not
make the event, there was a good turnout of students from a number of the west end schools. Over 19
Ontario universities were represented.
It was great to see so many parents at parent-teacher interviews last Thursday. A reminder to all parents that if you have a question or concern about your child’s progress to contact the subject teacher
(teacher emails and extensions are available on the school website - www.ayj.ca).
We have over one hundred and forty students signed up for our first school dance “Fall Fever” taking
place tonight. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the dance ends at 11:00 p.m.
A.Y. Jackson will be entertaining a number of administrators and senior staff from the Board on November 3rd. They will be part of a District Review looking at A.Y. Jackson. They will be visiting
classrooms and making observations in an attempt to provide our school with some feedback on some
identified goals.
It is a busy time for our Fall sports teams. The Varsity Boys’ Volleyball team enters their stretch run
with a record of 4-4. The Varsity Girls’ Field Hockey team currently leads the West Division with a

Girls Basketball team split a pair of games with a narrow loss to Osgoode and a win over Ridgemont.
The Varsity Boy’s Hockey team sits with a record of 2-2 after a couple of close losses to Glebe and St.
Marks. The Varsity Girl’s Hockey team sits atop the West Division with a record of 3-1 after a victory over Bell.
