Hebrew School in Harlem
Though this mixed class is called Jerusalem Class, [but] it is located far away from it,
at the heart of the Harlem neighborhood in New York. The Harlem Hebrew Charter
School is a public school supported by New York municipality. It’s open to all of the
neighborhood’s residents with no regard to religion, race or gender; it has no Jewish
or religious contents, and its tuition is free. There are about twenty students and two
teachers in every class, one teaches in Hebrew and the other in English. The
school’s location specifically at the place most recognized as the center of the AfroAmerican community in America, raised quite a bit of criticism by the neighborhood’s
residents at first. But in light of the academic achievements, connection between
families and the growing waiting list, [at] the school is preparing to open another age
group next year. So we have a country and we have a home, and we have a bridge
in the shape of the Hebrew language, which connects young friends overseas.
