Concretezza nei rapporti
per rendere più credibile la nostra Terra
R
itorniamo a parlare con voi, cari amici, dopo qualche mese di sosta. Lo
facciamo con lo stesso entusiasmo e con il desiderio di continuare ad
essere da voi letti e, come sempre, ben accettati. Sapete tutti, corregionali
all’estero, le vicende politiche che si sono consumate in questi mesi nel
nostro, nel vostro Paese d’origine. Per vostra tranquillità dobbiamo dire che esse
non hanno assolutamente inciso sul lavoro che la Giunta regionale guidata dal Presidente Scopelliti sta portando avanti. Molti sono stati in questi mesi passati i vostri
segnali, attraverso l’e-mail ed il telefono, che ci hanno fatto sentire quanto grande
sia il desiderio di colloquiare con la vostra Calabria. Riprendiamo a pubblicare la rivista con lo stesso stile, cercando di darle la forma ed i colori che di più vi piacciono.
Intendendo per forma, la capacità d’informarvi puntualmente su ciò che accade qui,
e per colore, la capacità di dirvi le cose senza alcuna alterazione, perché voi possiate trarre le giuste considerazioni e farne le dovute valutazioni. In questo numero
di ottobre abbiamo cercato di sintetizzare, in pochi articoli, le principali tappe e le
maggiori cose fatte dal governo regionale. In alcune di essi vi sono raccontate anche
le visite istituzionali che il Presidente Scopelliti ha fatto proprio negli Stati dove voi
risiedete. Lì ha incontrato rappresentanti dei governi locali, operatori economici,
imprenditori e con essi ha avviato, per conto della nostra Regione, seri rapporti di
collaborazione che rappresentano concretamente la possibilità e la capacità di aprire
un dialogo con quanti amano e rispettano la nostra tradizione, la nostra cultura e, per
che no, il modo con cui ci rapportiamo con il resto del mondo. Lo sforzo che si sta
facendo in questa direzione è notevole. E’ per questo che il Presidente Scopelliti ha
tenuto a dare, personalmente, l’indirizzo politico a questo settore dell’emigrazione.
Oggi più che mai è forte il bisogno di trasmettere concretezza nei rapporti e fiducia
nell’operare. La Calabria è pronta a questa sfida, lo sta facendo con caparbietà e con
sicurezza. Sono certo che voi, anche di questo, potrete andare fieri.

Substance in relations to strengthen the credibility of our land

Dear friends, we are back after a few months of rest. We do it with the same enthusiasm and the
desire to continue to be read by you and, as always, knowing that you will accept us. You all know,
fellow countrymen abroad, the political events that have evolved in recent months in our…and
your country of origin. For your peace of mind we must say that they have absolutely no impact
on the work that the Regional Government led by President Scopelliti is pushing ahead. Many of
you have been in touch by phone or through email in these past months, and this made us experience firsthand how great the desire to communicate with your Calabria really is. We continue to
publish the magazine with the same style, trying to give you the shape and colours that you like so
much. We intend to improve in our ability to inform you regularly about what happens here, and
for colour, our ability to say things without any alteration, so that you may make the necessary assessments and draw the right conclusions. In this issue of October, we tried to summarize in a few
articles, the more important stages and the major tasks undertaken by the regional government. In
some of them you will find details of the institutional visits that President Scopelliti has just made
in the states where you reside. There he met with representatives of local governments, businesses,
and entrepreneurs, with whom, on behalf of our region, has started some serious collaborative
relationships that concretely represent the opportunity and the ability to open a dialogue with those
who love and respect our tradition, our culture and also the way in which we relate to the rest of
the world. The effort being done in this direction is remarkable. It is for this reason that President
Scopelliti was keen to personally give political guidance in this area. Today more than ever there
is a strong need to convey substance and trust in working relationships. Calabria is ready for this
challenge; it is doing it with determination and sensibility. I am sure that you, even at this initial
stage, can be proud of the effort put in.

Nel mondo per illustrare
l’attività della Regione.
Scopelliti e Grillo: “Dimostrazione di
affetto e grande emozione ricevuta
dai calabresi all’estero”
Dall’Argentina al Canada, ma anche Austria, Stati Uniti e Germania tra le mete toccate,
oltre, ovviamente i luoghi simbolo dell’emigrazione in Italia: Milano, Pavia, Torino.
Una lunga serie di viaggi istituzionali effettuati dal Presidente Scopelliti e dal consigliere delegato all’emigrazione Alfonsino Grillo. Gli obiettivi sono mutati. Non solo
i classici incontri con gli emigrati, ma soprattutto occasione per far vedere anche ai
loro figli e nipoti, quanto e come la Calabria sia cambiata e far capire quanto il “prodotto” Calabria sia appetibile all’estero. Scopelliti, proprio per questo, ha delegato il
consigliere Alfonsino Grillo a tenere i rapporti con le comunità sparse per il mondo.
La prima missione da consigliere delegato di Grillo, in Argentina nel 2010, è stata particolarmente apprezzata dalla comunità locale. E’ coincisa con la “settimana calabrese
in Argentina” organizzata dalla Federazione associazioni calabresi d’Argentina (Faca).
Numerosi sono stati gli incontri istituzionali programmati con le associazioni e le istituzioni calabro-argentine, con i membri del Governo e della Camera e con l’ambasciata
italiana. Ed ancora l’incontro con il ministro di Economia della Provincia di Buenos
Aires, Alejandro Arlia, la visita alla scuola elementare e superiore del centro Calabrese Bivongese e con l’ambasciatore Guido La Tella. Da segnalare inoltre la visita
alla Camera legislativa di Buenos Aires, accolti dal presidente della Camera on. Oscar
Moscariello e dal deputato di origine italiana on. Borrelli e l’incontro con i presidenti
delle associazioni calabresi nella sede della Faca. Al termine dei vari appuntamenti
l’incontro con la Commissione direttiva della Faca ed una visita alla sede dell’asso-

ciazione “Calabresi Uniti”. La successiva
missione ha toccato, nel dicembre 2010,
New York. Nella grande mela i calabresi
dell’America Centrale hanno organizzato
un ricco carnet di appuntamenti ed incontri che hanno avuto come protagonista il
Presidente Scopelliti, il consigliere Grillo
ed il sottosegretario Sarra. Di particolare
rilevanza il convegno sul 150° anniversario dell’Unità d’Italia con la partecipazione dell’associazioni dei Calabresi d’America, la visita al Governatore Pataki. Infine
il significativo incontro con l’ex sindaco
di New York Rudolph Giuliani per una
approfondita discussione sui temi della
sicurezza in Calabria.
Nel marzo 2011 è stata la volta del Canada, Montreal e Toronto, in occasione
della prima giornata mondiale dell’Emigrazione e per l’anniversario della nomina
a Patrono della Calabria di San Francesco
da Paola. Su input della federazione dei
calabresi nel Canada, a Toronto, si è tenuto l’incontro con le associazioni e le
federazioni italo-canadesi, per affrontare
le tematiche connesse alle prospettive di
sviluppo del comparto turistico in Calabria. La delegazione ha partecipato, poi,
al raduno delle associazioni italo-canadesi
e alla messa solenne in onore di San Francesco. A Montreal, infine, l’appuntamento
con i consultori del Quebec.
A Washington, nel novembre 2011, la
delegazione ha partecipato alla tre giorni
organizzata per promuovere l’eccellenze made in Italy dalla NIAF. Oltre alla
visita alle comunità dei Calabresi a Washington si è rivelato molto importante
il vertice con il consiglio direttivo NIAF
nel corso del quale è stata promossa la
partecipazione della Regione Calabria in
qualità di regione d’onore per l’edizione
2012 del gala della NIAF. Appuntamento
poi ricambiato. Lo scorso giugno, infatti,
a Reggio Calabria, in Consiglio regionale, il Presidente della Regione Giuseppe
Scopelliti e il Presidente del Consiglio regionale Francesco Talarico hanno ricevuto a palazzo Campanella i rappresentanti
del Consiglio d’Amministrazione della
National Italian American Foundation
(NIAF), presenti in Calabria per una serie
di riunioni. “E’ stato un piacere accogliere
la delegazione della Niaf - ha dichiarato il
Presidente Scopelliti - siamo decisamente
interessati a proseguire il rapporto con le
comunità italo-americane, anche in virtù
del protocollo d’intesa firmato nei mesi
scorsi. La loro presenza in Calabria testimonia il reale interesse e la grande considerazione verso a nostra regione”.
Ritorno nel vecchio continente e tappa a
Vienna per la promozione della Calabria
attraverso i canali messi a disposizione
dal Governo austriaco. Grazie alla calorosa accoglienza della comunità dei calabresi si sono realizzati gli incontri con il
Sottosegretario alla Difesa austriaco Peter
Fichtenbaur, presso la sede del palazzo
del Governo, e con il Governatore della
Bassa Austria, Wolfang Sobotka, per discutere di turismo e sviluppo sostenibile.
Successivamente la delegazione calabrese si è recata a Wolfburg per la settimana
della Calabria in Germania organizzata
in corrispondenza del 500° anniversario
dell’arrivo degli italiani in Germania. Tra
i momenti più significativi l’incontro con
l’Ambasciatore italiano in Germania Michele Valensise, con il Console d’Italia
Giampaolo Ceprino, con il responsabile
dell’istituto di cultura Marlies Ottimofiore, con sindaco Klaus Mohrs e la visita
al consiglio Comunale di Wolfburg. Di
particolare interesse la partecipazione
alla mostra dei borghi della Calabria dal
titolo “Passaggi e Paesaggi”, e l’inaugurazione della Fiera della Calabria nella
città di Wolfburg. Il ritorno a Washington
ad ottobre 2012 ha un sapore particolare
per la Calabria che, così come concordato
dal consiglio direttivo del NIAF, è stata
la Regione d’onore alla manifestazione
di Gala della NIAF. Un ruolo di prestigio
che la Calabria si è ritagliata insieme ad
una serie di appuntamenti nella capitale
statunitense quali l’incontro con Joseph
del Raso presidente della NIAF, la visita all’ambasciata Italiana, la cerimonia
di apertura della fiera della Regione e la
partecipazione al convegno sul turismo
alla presenza dei media americani e degli
imprenditori del settore. A rappresentare
la Regione, il Presidente della Fondazione
Calabresi nel Mondo Pino Galati.
Sempre nel 2012 il Presidente Scopelliti
e il consigliere Grillo sono tornati a fare
visita alle comunità dei Calabresi a Montreal. Il viaggio istituzionale ha previsto
un tour nel centro “Leonardo da Vinci”,
l’incontro con il consiglio COMITES e
con l’associazione CIPBA (Associazione Canadese per l’Imprenditoria Italiana)
ed un confronto con la Camera di Commercio di Montreal per possibili scambi
commerciali del made in Calabria. Anche
nel 2013 la Regione ha rinnovato l’appuntamento con la comunità dei calabresi di
Montreal. Un modo per dimostrare come
la Regione sia cambiata, e soprattutto per
illustrare i tanti progetti avviati e le numerose iniziative messe in atto dall’ammini-
strazione Scopelliti. A queste missioni
bisogna poi aggiungere i viaggi del Presidente Scopelliti e degli assessori finalizzati allo sviluppo del nostro territorio. Tra
i tanti, Dubai, la Cina e la Corea.
Negli Emirati arabi uniti, Scopelliti ha
incontrato a Dubai, il ministro dell’economia Sultan Al Mansouri. Il governatore calabrese ha illustrato al Ministro le
opportunita’ di investimento per i fondi
sovrani dell’Emirato in Calabria. Al Mansouri, al quale e’ stato mostrato un video
promozionale della regione, ha espresso
la meraviglia e interesse per le bellez-
la sede della Regione di Gyeonggi-do il
vicegovernatore Nam Choong Hee con
il consigliere diplomatico ambasciatore Lee Yong Joon e l’assessore al lavoro
Kim Hyun Soo. Il Presidente Scopelliti ha
sottolineato l’importanza dei rapporti tra
le due realtà: “e’ una regione molto interessante in cui noi vorremmo sviluppare
sia l’aspetto turistico che agroalimentare.
Pensiamo sia molto importante far conoscere i nostri prodotti. Dobbiamo poi
costruire un rapporto legato al turismo, ci
sono circa trecentomila coreani che vengono in Italia ma sono pochi quelli che
ze della Calabria. In Cina la missione è
servita a presentare la Calabria ai cinesi
e visitare il nuovo International trade city
in costruzione, ossia una superficie di trecentomila metri quadrati di cui almeno
sessantamila destinati alle aziende italiane nella municipalità di Jimo. L’interesse
maggiore è stato mostrato per le aziende
produttrici di moda, gioielleria ed enogastronomia. Ma naturalmente ci sono stati
alcuni prodotti tipici ad accendere desideri e curiosità del Paese del Dragone. Scopelliti si è anche soffermato sul progetto
legato alla portualità sia commerciale che
turistica con Gioia Tauro, porto chiave
del Mediterraneo che fa gola a Pechino, e
sullo stato delle strutture alberghiere.
Anche in Corea, il Presidente Giuseppe
Scopelliti e gli assessori Michele Trematerra e Luigi Fedele, hanno cercato
di vendere il prodotto Calabria. Presso
conoscono il Sud terra ricca di bellezze
artistiche. Scopelliti ha invitato sia il governatore che il vicegovernatore a visitare
la Calabria per avviare il gemellaggio tra
le due Regioni e poter discutere di eventuali accordi commerciali.
La maggior parte dell’economia del Gyeonggi-do, regione di oltre dodici milioni
di abitanti, è infatti composta da industrie
ad alta tecnologia”. L’attrazione di capitali esteri e l’attivazione di misure finalizzate all’incremento di turisti e visitatori
devono convivere, necessariamente, con
le emozioni che suscitano gli incontri con
i nostri emigrati ed i loro figli, fuggiti da
fame e guerre.

From Argentina to Canada, but also Austria, the United States and Germany among the destinations affected, and of course the symbolic places of emigration
in Italy: Milan, Pavia and Turin - a long series of institutional journeys made by President Scopelliti and Councillor responsible for emigration Alfonsino
Grillo. The objectives have changed. Not only the classic encounters with migrants, but this trip was also an opportunity for Calabria to show to its children
and grandchildren how much has changed and in turn, for Calabria to understand how the “product” Calabria was faring abroad. Due to this reason Scopelliti
has delegated Councillor Alfonsino Grillo to liaise with communities around the world.
The first mission as delegate of emigration took place in Argentina in 2010, where the visit was particularly appreciated by the local community. It coincided
with the Calabrian week in Argentina, an event organized by the Federation of Calabrian Associations in Argentina (FACA). Numerous meetings have been
scheduled with a number of associations and institutions both in Calabria and Argentina, with members of the Government and the House and with the Italian
embassy. One must not forget the meeting with the Minister of Economy of the Province of Buenos Aires, Alejandro Arlia , a visit to the elementary and high
schools in the Calabrian centre of Bivongese and with Ambassador Guido La Tella . Also of note was the trip to the Legislative chamber of Buenos Aires,
where he was welcomed by the Speaker of the House Hon. Oscar Moscariello and his deputy of Italian descent Hon. Borrelli. Furthermore, there was his
meeting with the presidents of the Calabrian associations at the headquarters of FACA. At the end of these various appointments, there was the encounter with
FACA’s steering committee and a visit to the headquarters of “Calabresi Uniti”.
The next mission took place in December 2010 in New York. In the Big Apple, the Calabresi of Central America organized a varied programme of events and
meetings that starred President Scopelliti, Councillor Grillo and the Association Secretary Sarra. Worthy of note was the conference on the 150th anniversary
of the Unification of Italy with the participation of the Calabrian Associations of America, together with a visit to Governor Pataki. Finally, there was the very
significant meeting with former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for a thorough discussion on security issues in Calabria.
In March 2011, it was the turn of Canada’s Montreal and Toronto, on the occasion of the first World Day of Emigration and on the anniversary of San Francesco da Paola’s appointment as patron of Calabria. On the insistence of the Calabrian Federation of Canada, a meeting for the Italo-Canadian associations was
held in Toronto to address issues related to the development prospects of the tourism sector in Calabria. The delegation then took part at the gathering of the
Italo-Canadian associations and the mass in honor of St. Francis. Finally there was the meeting with the councillors of Quebec in Montreal.
In November 2011, the delegation participated in a three-day event organized to promote the excellence of Made in Italy by NIAF in Washington. In addition
to visiting the Calabrian community in Washington, the summit with the NIAF’s board of directors during which there was the much vaunted promotion of
the participation of the Calabria region as a region of honour for the 2012 edition of the NIAF Gala. As can be seen further along this article, this visit was
later honoured. Last June, in fact, in Reggio Calabria’s Regional Council, President Scopelliti and the President of the Regional Council Talarico received
representatives of the Board of Directors of the
National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) at the Campanella palace. The delegation was in Calabria for a series of scheduled meetings. “It’s been a pleasure to welcome the delegation of the NIAF,” said President Scopelliti, “we are definitely interested in continuing the relationship with the Italo-American
communities, also by virtue of the memorandum of understanding signed in recent months. Their presence in Calabria testifies to their genuine interest and
the great consideration they hold towards our region.”
Back in the old continent we had the visit to Vienna for the promotion of Calabria through the channels made available to us by the Austrian Government.
Thanks to the warm welcome of the Calabrian community, we have managed meetings with the Austrian Vice Secretary of Defence, Peter Fichtenbaur, at
the headquarters of the government building, and with the Governor of Lower Austria, Wolfgang Sobotka, to discuss tourism and sustainable development.
Subsequently, the Calabrian delegation went to Wolfburg for the Calabria Week in Germany organized on the 500th anniversary of the first arrival of Italians
in Germany. Among the most significant moments was the encounter with the Italian Ambassador, Michele Valensise in Germany, another meeting with the
Consul of Italy Giampaolo Ceprino, a courtesy visit to the head of the institution of culture Marlies Ottimofiore, another with Mayor Klaus Mohrs and also
a visit to the municipal council of Wolfburg . Of particular interest was the participation in the exhibition of the villages of Calabria entitled “Steps and Landscapes”, and the inauguration of the Calabria fair, both in the city of Wolfburg.
The return to Washington in October 2012 had a special flavour for Calabria since, as agreed with NIAF’s board of directors; our region was the region of
honour at the NIAF’s gala event. This is considered a very prestigious role that Calabria has managed successfully with a series of events in the U.S. capital to
mark this landmark event: the encounter with Joseph Raso president of NIAF, a visit to the Italian Embassy, our presence at the opening ceremony of the fair
of the region and subsequent participation in the conference on tourism in the presence of the American media and entrepreneurs of the industry. The President
of the Foundation of Calabresi nel Mondo Pine Galati was representing the region.
Also in 2012, President Scopelliti and Councillor Grillo re-visited the Calabrian communities in Montreal. The trip included a tour of the institutional centre
“Leonardo da Vinci”, a meeting with the COMITES board and CIPBA (Canadian Association for Italian Entrepreneurship) and talks with Montreal’s Chamber of Commerce for possible Calabrian commercial exchanges. The region also renewed the appointment with Montreal’s Calabrian community for 2013.
This is one way to demonstrate how the region has changed, and especially to illustrate the many projects initiated and the many initiatives put in place by
President Scopelliti. To these missions one must also add the various trips of President Scopelliti and Aldermen aimed at furthering the development of our
country, amongst the many, one finds Dubai, China and Korea.
In the United Arab Emirates, Scopelliti met Economy Minister Sultan Al Mansouri in Dubai. The President of Calabria explained to the Minister the opportunity for investment that existed for the Emirates funds in Calabria. Al Mansouri, who was shown a promotional video of the region, has expressed interest
in the wonders and beauty of our land.
In China, the mission served to present Calabria to the Chinese and also to visit the new International trade city under construction, covering an area of three
hundred square metres of which at least sixty thousand are reserved for Italian companies in the municipality of Jimo. The main interest was shown for manufacturers of fashion jewellery, food and wine. But of course there were also other typical products to ignite the desires and curiosity of the Land of the Dragon.
Scopelliti also focused on a project related both to commercial and touristic port facilities and the status of the hotel facilities at Gioia Tauro, a key port in the
Mediterranean that is tempting Beijing. Even in Korea, President Giuseppe Scopelliti and Commissioners Michele Trematerra and Luigi Fedele tried to sell
the Calabria product. At the region’s headquarters, Deputy Governor Gyeonggi-do Choong Hee Nam with Diplomatic Advisor Ambassador Lee Yong Joon
and Labour Commissioner Kim Hyun Soo. President Scopelliti stressed the importance of relations between the two entities: “It is a very interesting region in
which we would like to develop both the tourist and culinary aspect. We think it is very important to let others know of our products. Then we must also build
a relationship related to tourism, especially since there are about three hundred thousand Koreans who annually visit Italy, but there are very few who know
that the South is rich in artistic beauty.” Scopelliti went on to invite both the governor and his deputy to visit Calabria to start a twinning project between the
two regions and to discuss various trade agreements. Most of the economy of Gyeonggi-do, a region of more than twelve million inhabitants, is in fact made
up of high-tech industries. The attraction of foreign capital and the implementation of measures aimed at increasing tourists and visitors have to be ongoing,
if necessary with emotionally stirred up meetings with our emigrants and their children, who had fled from hunger and war many years ago.

2013 del “Cruise Shipping”, la più importante fiera mondiale del settore crocieristico. Dopo la prima partecipazione al
“Seatrade” di Marsiglia, che ha consentito alla Regione di avviare il lancio dei
quattro porti calabresi dedicati al settore
crocieristico: Crotone, Corigliano, Vibo
Valentia e Reggio Calabria, la presenza a
Miami rappresenta una tappa fondamentale per proseguire il radicamento in questo particolare segmento turistico. All’appuntamento statunitense promosso in
sinergia con l’Autorità Portuale di Gioia
Tauro, era presente il Presidente della Regione Giuseppe Scopelliti che ha seguito
direttamente tutti gli incontri organizzati
presso lo stand. Della delegazione ha fatto parte anche l’Assessore alle politiche
internazionali Luigi Fedele. Significativo
anche il supporto del Dipartimento regionale turismo, rappresentato dal Dirigente
Pasquale Anastasi e dell’Autorità Portuale di Gioia Tauro, rappresentata dal Presidente Giovanni Grimaldi e dal Segretario
Generale Salvatore Silvestri. La Consulta

di positiva sinergia istituzionale che sta
producendo buoni risultati. Gli operatori

Calabria. Si tratta di un significativo passo in avanti anche rispetto alle 8 navi che
hanno fatto scalo lo scorso anno nella nostra regione.

ENCOURAGING SIGNS FROM THE EXHIBITION “CRUISE SHIPPING MIAMI, 2013”

In order to extend and improve our promotional offers for tourists to entice them to visit Calabria, the region has participated in the 2013 edition of “Cruise
Shipping Miami”, the most important fair in the world in the cruise industry. After the first visit to “Seatrade” in Marseille which has allowed the region to
initiate the launch of the four Calabria ports dedicated to the cruise industry (Crotone, Corigliano, Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria), our presence in Miami
is a key step to continue establishing ourselves in this particular segment. This US appointment was held in collaboration with the Port Authority of Gioia
Tauro and was attended by the President of the Region Giuseppe Scopelliti who attentively followed all the meetings organized at the stand. Councillor for
International Policy Luigi Fedele was also part of the delegation. Another significant presence was that of the Regional Department of Tourism, represented
by Executive Pasquale Anastasi and the two representatives of the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro, President Giovanni Grimaldi and General Secretary Salvatore Silvestri. The Regional Council of Calabria abroad was represented by Luigi Bava, who consistently advised and supported the delegation of from
our region in Miami. The participation at the Miami fair was strategically planned according to the drafting of the regional plan that identified four regional
ports that had the right infrastructure for the development of cruise tourism (Crotone, Corigliano , Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria). Moreover, there was
the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding on port systems, which has already resulted in the first arrivals of ships to our shores. Numerous meetings
held by President Scopelliti, including those with representatives of the most important shipping companies, like Saga Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises,
Kristina Cruises, Carnival Group UK, SeaDream Yacht Club, Silversea, Azamara Cruises and Seabourne Cruise Line. Also of particular interest are the
interviews conducted with tour operators specializing in the cruise industry, including Cemar, Aloschi & Bassani, Medov, Hugo Trumpy and Intertravel. The
stand of the Calabria region and the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro also hosted the Consul General of Italy in Miami Adolfo Barattolo who spoke at length
with President Scopelliti, the only other Italian political/institutional authority present for the occasion. The presence of Calabria at Cruise Shipping Miami
has been highly appreciated by tour operators and representatives of shipping companies. The very presence of President Scopelliti has helped to intensify
and obtain many useful contacts to follow up in terms of possible proactive collaboration. The concurrent presence of the President of the Port Authority of
Gioia Tauro, Giovanni Grimaldi, was a further moment of positive institutional synergy that produced good results. Business operators were very pleased,
expressing their interest in continuing their commitment to Calabria. President Scopelliti stated that, “this fair was an experience that has allowed us to
strengthen a very interesting tourist segment, such as the cruise industry. We have managed to insert ourselves in the big cruise companies’ itineraries as
of 2015. On the other hand, with the smaller companies we managed to negotiate good deals and we might even work something out as early as 2014 for
our region. Our planning in this area is important since it constitutes an opportunity to augment tourist numbers, with good spending power who would be
mainly interested in cultural circuits. Calabria is a land that is still little explored and has the potential to generate a great deal of interest. We believe that
this is the type of activity needed for the economic revitalization of our land.” The President of the Port of Gioia Tauro Giovanni Grimaldi maintained, “We
are carrying out this initiative in collaboration with the region and with President Scopelliti to enhance the field of cruise tourism in the four Calabrian ports,
two of which, Crotone and Corigliano, are the responsibility of the Port Authority. We are satisfied with what we have achieved so far and the arrival of the
first cruise ships bears witness to this. We believe that this package tour fits well within a wider range of offers the region has already fielded. I am confident
in a bright future for the region.” Thanks to a fruitful dialogue with the more important cruise operators globally, also followed up by Vice-President of the
Region Antonella Stasi, we planned 15 cruise stops this year, with an estimated 7,000 passengers who have had the opportunity to visit the scenic beauty,
cultural and historical heritage of Calabria. It is a significant step forward with respect to the 8 ships that had landed last year in our region.

l made in Calabria piace sempre di più all’estero. I numeri rilevati dall’Osservatorio regionale, dopo l’analisi dei dati Istat, sono molto incoraggianti
e indicano un aumento significativo delle esportazioni dei prodotti calabresi, soprattutto negli ultimi periodi. Esaminando il primo trimestre
2013, la vendita all’estero di ‘oli e grassi’ è aumentata del 51,8% rispetto allo
stesso periodo del 2012 durante il quale, peraltro, si era già registrato un importante miglioramento rispetto al passato con un +32% . Il fatturato dei primi
tre mesi di quest’anno è di poco superiore a 4,1 milioni di euro. Numeri importanti, soprattutto considerando che la media nazionale si attesta al +18%.
E’ un trend positivo che continua a crescere: negli ultimi 10 anni, infatti, le
esportazioni degli oli calabresi sono cresciute del 183,6%.
Possono sorridere anche i produttori del settore vitivinicolo. Sempre nel primo
trimestre 2013, l’aumento dell’esportazione di vino calabrese ha raggiunto il
+33% rispetto al 2012, anno che si era chiuso con un aumento del 22%, con un
fatturato di circa 1,4 milioni di euro. Da evidenziare che la media nazionale, pur
sempre positiva, si attesta solo sul +9.7% per cui, in questo ambito così come
per il settore oleario, la Calabria supera abbondantemente la media nazionale.
Gli Assessori Fedele e Trematerra
Importanti aumenti sono stati registrati anche riguardo l’esportazione di
frutta e ortaggi. In questo comparto,
nel primo trimestre 2013, per la Calabria si è registrato un amento del
15.1% rispetto allo stesso periodo del
2012. Dati molto positivi che, anche
in questo caso, vanno oltre la media
nazionale, attestatasi sul +4,4%.
“Sono cifre significative – afferma
l’Assessore regionale all’Internazionalizzazione Luigi Fedele – frutto di
una seria pianificazione da parte di
questa amministrazione regionale,
che ha sempre ribadito l’importanza
di supportare le aziende con tutti gli
strumenti disponibili e con la partecipazione alle più importanti fiere nazionali ed internazionali. Sappiamo
bene che la Calabria possiede tantissimi prodotti di eccellenza e, negli
ultimi anni, insieme ai processi legati alla filiera produttiva ci sono stati
notevoli passi in avanti anche nelle
operazioni di marketing. Siamo soddisfatti ma non appagati, consapevoli
che le potenzialità di questa terra permettono di puntare ancora più in alto.
La volontà del Presidente Scopelliti è
di incrementare le azioni in grado di
aumentare le esportazioni dei prodotti calabresi. C’è ancora tanto da fare
– conclude l’Assessore Fedele - ma
questi risultati indicano chiaramente che il percorso intrapreso è quello
giusto”.
“Abbiamo messo in campo azioni di
sostegno importanti per i produttori
calabresi – dichiara l’Assessore alle
Politiche Agricole e Forestali Michele
Trematerra – e ne stiamo raccogliendo i frutti. Uno degli ultimi provvedimenti riguarda lo stanziamento di 2
milioni di euro per la riconversione di

circa 160 ettari di vigneti. Attraverso
questi interventi si potranno esprimere al meglio le potenzialità della
filiera vitivinicola calabrese, qualificando maggiormente le produzioni e
aumentando la competitività dei produttori di vino attraverso l’ammodernamento dei vigneti. Recentemente
abbiamo inaugurato la ‘Casa delle
eccellenze calabresi’ per promuovere
ulteriormente i nostri prodotti in tutto
il mondo e stiamo mettendo in campo azioni di ogni tipo, insieme agli
assessorati all’Internazionalizzazione
e alle Attività Produttive, con il prezioso supporto di Unioncamere, per
dare ulteriore slancio a questo comparto, particolarmente strategico per
la crescita economica della Calabria.
Qualche settimana fa, insieme al Presidente Scopelliti e all’Assessore Fedele, ci siamo recati in Corea del Sud
e abbiamo descritto le caratteristiche
dei nostri prodotti, per cui auspichiamo di poterci affermare anche in questa fetta di mercato. Noto con piacere,
inoltre, che tra gli stessi produttori c’è
un nuovo modo di concepire i processi
produttivi – conclude l’Assessore Trematerra – e ritengo che lavorando tutti
insieme, ciascuno facendo la propria
parte, otterremo risultati straordinari”.
Il brand Calabria riscuote molto successo all’estero e si sta già lavorando
per preparare al meglio l’evento che,
più di ogni altro, potrà promuovere le
eccellenze regionali in tutto il mondo:
“Expo Milano 2015 è un’occasione da
sfruttare al meglio – affermano gli Assessori Fedele e Trematerra – per far
conoscere ulteriormente i nostri prodotti ed aumentare la loro esportazione in tutto il mondo”.

OIL, WINE, FRUIT & VEGETABLES: “MADE IN CALABRIA” INCREASES ITS APPEAL
Very positive results in the first quarter of 2013, that satisfy Councillors Fedele and Trematerra

Made in Calabria is becoming more popular abroad. The numbers reported by the regional observer, after analysis of data from ISTAT, are very encouraging
and show a significant increase in exports of products from Calabria, especially in recent periods.
Looking at the first quarter of 2013, the sale of oils and fats abroad increased by a significant 51.8% over the same period in 2012, during which, however, we
had already registered a significant improvement compared to the past with an increase of 32 % back then. The turnover for the first quarter of this year is just
over €4.1 million: important numbers, especially considering that the national average stands at 18%. It is a positive trend that continues to grow: in the last
10 years, in fact, exports of Calabrian oil grew by an astounding 183.6%.
Wine producers have reason to smile too since in the first quarter of 2013, the increase in the export of Calabrian wine reached 33% more than the same period
in 2012. Last year we ended with an increase of 22% over the previous year and a turnover of €1.4 million. It should be noted that the national average, while
always positive, stands at only +9.7% in this area. Furthermore, in the oil sector, Calabria by far exceeds the national average.
Important increases were also recorded in the export of fruits and vegetables from Calabria. In the first quarter of 2013 there was an increase of 15.1% over the
same period of 2012 in this sector. This is very positive data that again is much better than the national average of +4.4%.
The Regional Minister for Internationalization Luigi Fedele said, “These are very significant figures and the result of some serious planning on the part of this
regional administration, which has always stressed the importance of supporting companies with all the available means and also by participating in the most
important national and international exhibitions. We know that Calabria has many excellent products and in recent years, along with the processes related to the
production process, there have been significant steps forward in marketing too. We are pleased but not yet fully satisfied, knowing that the potential of this land
allows us to aim even higher. The aim of President Scopelliti is to double his efforts to be able to increase exports of products from Calabria. There is still much
to do but these results clearly indicate that the route taken is the right one.” Councillor for Agriculture and Forestry Michele Trematerra asserted, “We have
put measures in place to support important issues for producers in Calabria and we are reaping the rewards. One of the latest measures concerns the allocation
of €2 million for the conversion of approximately 160 hectares of unused land into vineyards. Through these interventions we can express the full potential of
the wine industry in Calabria, mostly by improving production and increasing the competitiveness of wine producers through the modernization of vineyards.
We recently opened the ‘House of the excellent Calabresi’ to further promote our product all over the world. We are also differentiating our efforts, together
with the departments of Internationalization and Productive Activities and the valuable support of Unioncamere to give further impetus to this sector which is
particularly strategic for the economic growth of Calabria. A few weeks ago, together with President Scopelliti and Councillor Fedele, we went to South Korea
and explained the characteristics of our products, so we hope to establish our operations in this market too. I am pleased that among those producers there is
a new way of looking at the production process and I believe that by working together, each of us doing our own part, we will achieve extraordinary results.”
Councillors Fedele and Trematerra affirm that, “the brand Calabria is a success abroad and as such is ultimately working to better prepare for the event that will
promote Calabrian excellence in the world: “Expo Milano 2015. This is an opportunity that we have to make the most of in order to raise awareness about our
products and increase their export throughout the world.”

2013, perseguita con tenacia dall’assessore alla cultura Mario
Caligiuri anche in qualità di coordinatore della Commissione
cultura della Conferenza delle Regioni, “Un Regione per leggere”: lo slogan che ha contraddistinto il progetto dell’assessorato regionale alla Cultura - Polo per le politiche pubbliche della
lettura - all’appuntamento con il più grande evento europeo di
promozione del libro, della lettura e dell’editoria. Nel padiglione
Calabria, nei cinque giorni della kermesse, il calendario delle
iniziative ha abbracciato tutti gli aspetti della cultura calabrese: dalla storia al patrimonio artistico e all’archeologia, dall’imprenditoria all’enogastronomia, dalla letteratura all’arte contemporanea, attraverso esposizioni, spettacoli teatrali e musicali e
promozione di testi calabresi. Nel palcoscenico della manifestazione torinese sono state ospitate anche importanti mostre
sulla tipografia storica calabrese, con l’esposizione di rarissimi
incunaboli, tra i quali la prima bibbia a caratteri ebraici stampata
al mondo (Reggio Calabria, 1475), ed edizioni del Cinquecento
e del Seicento; una rassegna fotografica sul paesaggio calabrese
curata dal naturalista Francesco Bevilacqua; una mostra di illustratori di libri per bambini collegata alle numerose iniziative di
promozione della lettura realizzate dalla Regione in collaborazione con la Casa editrice “Coccole News”. Di particolare rilievo l’esposizione del Codice cinquecentesco Romano Carratelli,
raffigurante città fortificate, castelli e torri costiere della Calabria
nel Cinquecento. Nel corso dei cinque giorni del Salone del li-
bro, nel ricordo di grandi autori come Corrado Alvaro e Leonida Repaci, sono intervenuti, in una serie di incontri coordinati
dall’assessore Caligiuri, scrittori e giornalisti tra i quali Carmine
Abate, Mimmo Gangemi, Marina Valensise, Vito Teti, Angela
Bubba, Corrado Calabrò e Pippo Marra. Presenti anche Nicola Gratteri e Antonio Nicaso, con i loro testi sulla ‘ndrangheta,
Vittorio Sgarbi con la monografia su Mattia Preti edita da Rubbettino, l’orafo Gerrdo Sacco con il volume “Dìoro e dìargento”
e una vetrina delle sue più belle creazioni alcune ispirate all’arte
del pittore di Taverna Mattia Preti. Mentre lo scrittore Pino Aprile ha presentato il libro del cantautore Eugenio Bennato “Nino
Nanco deve morire. Viaggio nella storia e nella musica del Sud”
che il cantautore napoletano ha raccontato accompagnandosi
alla sua chitarra.
Lo stand della Regione ha ospitato anche dibattiti sulla Calabria
con Giovani Russo, Paolo Mieli, Salvatore Settis, Aldo Mola,
Salvatore Puglisi, Margherita Oggero, Giordano Bruno Guerri,
Giuseppe Roma, Renzo Gattegna, Sandra Savaglio, Michele
Cucuzza, Giorgio Albertazzi e Roberto Giacobbo; la presentazione dei Premi letterari “Tropea festival leggere&scrivere”,
“Rhegjum Julii”, “Sila”, “Caccuri” e anche il “Festival del giallo
di Cosenza” e il “Festival Palazzo rinascimentale di Aieta”, un
book shop dell’editoria e degli autori regionali, uno spazio di
valorizzazione dei più prestigiosi prodotti artigianali calabresi e
gastronomici anche con l’incontro tra la cioccolata piemontese
e la liquirizia calabrese. Inoltre, Armando Vitale ha presentato il
Progetto Gutenberg di cui è stato l’ideatore nel 2003. E non si
poteva non dedicare spazio anche alla musica, con la vendita di
cd e dischi in vinile dei più grandi artisti e musicisti calabresi;

dubbio alcuno stati i mille studenti arrivati dalla Calabria per un incontro collettivo
con alcuni scrittori presenti al Lingotto.
Infine, in collegamento con la mostra su
Mattia Preti, allestita alla Reggia di Venaria Reale e curata dal noto critico d’arte
Vittorio Sgarbi, al padiglione Calabria del
Lingotto è stata anche esposta una grande
un’opera del Cavaliere Calabrese, di cui
ricorre il IV centenario della nascita, ammirata con particolare interesse durante
la loro visita dai ministri Massimo Bray,

Calabria was the guest of honour of the International Book Fair of Turin,
which was held at the Lingotto Fiere in May. The establishment of the region as a guest of honour is among the novelties of the Exhibition for 2013,
tenaciously pursued by the Culture Commissioner Mario Caligiuri also as
cultural coordinator of the Committee of Regional Conferences. “A Region
for Reading” the slogan that has characterized the project of the regional department for culture, POLO (public policy for reading) - the appointment
with the largest European event for the promotion of books, reading and publishing. In the five-day event, held at the Calabria hall, the calendar of events
has embraced all aspects of Calabrian culture: from history to heritage and
archeology, from entrepreneurs to wine, from literature to contemporary art
through exhibitions, theatrical and musical performances and promotion of
texts from Calabria. In the staging of this event one could also experience
important exhibitions on the historical typography of Calabria, with an exhibition of rare incunabulae, including the first Bible printed in Hebrew in the
world (Reggio Calabria, 1475), together with editions of the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries.
There was also a photographic exhibition on Calabrian landscape, put together by naturalist Francesco Bevilacqua and an exhibition of illustrators of
children’s books related to numerous initiatives to promote reading made by
the region in collaboration with the publishing house “Cuddles News”. Of
particular note was the exposure of the centuries-old Roman code Carratelli,
depicting fortified towns, castles and towers along the coast of Calabria in
the sixteenth century. During the five days of the book fair, a series of public
meetings chaired by Councillor Caligiuri were held to commemorate the memory of great authors such as Corrado Alvaro and Leonidas Repaci. These
were attended by a number of notable writers and journalists, including Carmine Abate, Mimmo Gangemi, Marina Valensise , Vito Teti, Angela Bubba,
Corrado Calabro and Goofy Marra. Also present were Nicola Gratteri and
Antonio Nicaso, with their texts on the ‘Ndrangheta, Vittorio Sgarbi with the
monograph on Mattia Preti, published by Rubbettino, the goldsmith Gerrdo
Sacco with the book “Dioro e Diargento” (“Of Gold and Silver) together with
a showcase containing some of his most beautiful creations inspired by the art
of the tavern painter Mattia Preti.
The writer Pino Aprile presented Eugenio Bennato’s book: “Nino Nanco
must die: A journey into the history and music of the South” that the Neapolitan singer recited with the musical accompaniment of his guitar. The stand

Tra i tanti dati devastanti, che hanno riguardato il nostro Paese e anche la Calabria, secondo l’Istat la nostra regione non
è più la maglia nera nella lettura di libri
e di giornali, perché abbiamo superato la
Sicilia, la Campania, la Basilicata, la Puglia e intendiamo diventare entro il 2015
la prima regione del Sud come numero di
lettori. Per conseguire questi risultati –
ha evidenziato l’esponente della Giunta
regionale -, e sappiamo bene che ogni risultato è temporaneo, abbiamo sviluppato
una serie di iniziative, tra le quali l’istituzione del Polo regionale sulle politiche
pubbliche della lettura, la realizzazione di
un Libro Verde sulla Lettura in Calabria,
l’iniziativa un libero per ogni nato, la creazione di un sito che raccoglie oltre 120
biblioteche con oltre un milione e trecentomila volumi”.

not forgotten, with sales of CDs and vinyl records of the greatest artists and
musicians from Calabria. Theatre was also given importance, with the staging
of the Calabrian in Piedmont “Italianesi” and there was a show of solidarity
with the presentation of the Foundation “Benedetta è la vita”, a non-profit
organization, founded in memory of Benedetta Nieddu, who died in 2012 at
only sixteen years of age due to a particularly aggressive leukaemia.
The main protagonists of the closing day were without doubt the thousands
of students arrived from Calabria for a collective meeting with some writers
present at the Lingotto. Finally, in connection with the exhibition of Mattia
Preti, staged at the Reggia di Venaria Reale, a great work of the artist known

exhibition. Turin Mayor Fassino also presented Eric Salerno’s book “Rossi a
Manhattan”. Commissioner Caligiuri asserted that, “reading is a priority for
regional policy. If in Italy as is the case in Calabria, economic growth starts
from culture, then we must start from reading. Among the numerous discouraging data that has affected our country including Calabria, Istat states that
our region is no longer the in the bottom place in relation to the reading of
books and newspapers, because we have overtaken Sicily, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia. Our goal is to become the region with the highest number
of readers in the South by 2015. “To achieve these results”, continued the
representative of the Regional Council, “and we know that each result is temporary, we have developed a series of initiatives, including the establishment
of the Regional Centre on public policies for reading, the creation of a green
paper on reading in Calabria and last but not least the innovative idea “Un
libro per ogni nato” (“A book for every newborn”), whereby we created a
site that collects over 120 libraries with over a million and three hundred
thousand volumes.”

TEATRO FESTIVAL”

ichele Placido durante il suo recital “Amor ch’a
nullo amato amar perdona” al Castello Aragonese
di Reggio ebbe a dire: “Negli ambienti dello spettacolo della Capitale c’è grande considerazione del “Magna
Graecia Teatro Festival”, definito l’evento artistico e culturale più interessante dell’estate 2013”. Sul palcoscenico
c’era anche in quel momento Giorgio Albertazzi, il direttore
artistico della rassegna promossa dalla Regione Calabria,
il quale ha accolto con soddisfazione le parole di Michele
Placido, uno dei mattatori in questo percorso che ha visitato i più importanti siti archeologici della Calabria trasformarsi in altrettanti teatri all’aperto. In effetti questa decima
edizione si è rivelata per qualità e partecipazione come la
migliore. L’accoglienza del pubblico è stata straordinaria.
Massimo Ranieri, protagonista del “Riccardo III” di Shakespeare al termine dello spettacolo nel Parco archeologico
di Locri Epizeferi era entusiasta: “In Calabria - ha detto mi sta capitando una cosa eccezionale: la partecipazione è
superiore ad ogni aspettativa. Temevo che la gente che mi
conosce soprattutto come cantante potesse restare delusa da
quest’opera che è comunque impegnativa. E invece la Calabria mi ha gratificato dal primo all’ultimo giorno”. Michele
Placido e Massimo Ranieri sono stati indubbiamente i personaggi più attesi della rassegna calabrese, cominciata con
un’altra star del palcoscenico, l’attore Enrico Montesano
che ha portato in scena, grazie alla sua arte cabarettistica, la
sua satira di costumi e i suoi continui riferimenti all’attualità con lo spettacolo dal titolo “Agora”. Ma il Magna Grecia
Teatro Festival per volontà del governatore Giuseppe Scopelliti e dell’assessore regionale alla Cultura Mario Caligiuri, d’intesa ovviamente con il direttore artistico Giorgio
Albertazzi, ha valorizzato pure le risorse artistiche locali
come le Officine Jonike, la compagnia del “Vaporetto Allegro”, soprattutto il noto duo Giacomo Battaglia e Gigi Miseferi nel “Romanzo mitologico”. Da ricordare altre “novità”
come la “Banda Borbonica”, il recital “Pathos” dell’attrice
cantante Mariangela D’Abbraccio, la compagnia Porta Cenere, la “Giovanna d’Arco” di Elisabetta Pozzi. Tante opere
sono state preparate e realizzate esclusivamente per il Ma-

gna Graecia Teatro Festival che ha fatto tappa in tredici siti
archeologici della regione: Roccelletta di Borgia (allo Scolacium), Casignana (“Casa romana”), Palmi, Monasterace,
Diamante, Rosarno, Reggio (Castello Aragonese), Ricadi,
Crotone, Cassano, Lamezia Terme, Locri, Vibo Valentia. I
siti archeologici delle città dove si sono svolti gli spettacoli sono stati messi a disposizione dalla Soprintendenza ai
Beni culturali della Calabria. L’affluenza del pubblico pagante è stata complessivamente superiore al 15 per cento
rispetto alla passata edizione. L’assessore Caligiuri rileva
con soddisfazione che “il dato dell’aumento degli spettatori
ci conforta, anche perché è stato rilevato un incremento dei
visitatori nei siti archeologici durante l’anno”. Secondo i
dati della Soprintendenza dei Beni Culturali della Calabria
nel primo semestre 2013 si è registrato, infatti, un aumento
di visitatori del 5 per cento rispetto al 2012. “Anno in cui –
viene fatto rilevare – si era registrato un sensibile aumento
del 48 per cento nei siti archeologici calabresi, grazie al
progetto regionale di educazione all’archeologia “Calabria
Jones”, che ha avuto un notevole successo”. Tornando al
Magna Grecia Teatro Festival, l’assessore Caligiuri, presente allo spettacolo di Michele Placido a Reggio, conferma la
sensazione dell’attore: “Nonostante le difficoltà, questa decima edizione si è imposta come la migliore. Inoltre secondo Michele Placido il nostro “Magna Grecia” è giudicato
negli ambienti artistici della Capitale l’evento artistico più
interessante dell’estate. Questa sua testimonianza ci gratifica , anche perché dà un qualificato riconoscimento al direttore artistico Giorgio Albertazzi”. Michele Placido a Reggio
aveva detto pure un’altra cosa importante: “La Calabria è
una delle pochissime regioni italiane ad aver saputo spendere i fondi europei per lo spettacolo”.

MORE SUCCESS IN THE MAGNA GRAECIA THEATRE FESTIVAL

During his recital “Amor ch’a nullo amato amar perdona” at the Aragonese Castle of Reggio, Michele Placido had this to say: “In performance circles in the
capital there is a great esteem for the “Magna Graecia” theatre festival, defined as one of the most interesting artistic events of the cultural summer 2013.”
Giorgio Albertazzi, the artistic director of the festival promoted by Regione Calabria, happened to be on stage at the same time as these words were uttered and
warmly welcomed the words of Michele Placido, one of the star performers in this festival that has visited the most important archaeological sites in Calabria,
transforming them into open-air theatres.
In fact, this tenth edition has proved to be the best in terms of quality and participation. The reception by the public was extraordinary. Massimo Ranieri, who
was the protagonist of “Richard III” by Shakespeare at the Archaeological Park of Locri Epizeferi was enthusiastic the end of the show: “Calabria made me
experience something new: the participation is beyond all expectations. I was afraid that the people who know me primarily as a singer might be disappointed
by this work which is very challenging to say the least. However, Calabria has embraced me from the festival’s first day to the last.”
Michele Placido and Massimo Ranieri were undoubtedly the most well-known protagonists in this popular event of Calabria. However the festival kicked off
with another star of the stage, the actor Enrico Montesano who brought along his satire of costumes and his continuous references to current shows, thanks to
his art cabaret entitled “Agora”. However, the Magna Grecia theatre festival under the auspices of President Giovanni Scopelliti and Councillor responsible
for Regional Culture Mario Caligiuri, in agreement with the artistic director Giorgio Albertazzi, relied on local artistic talent, such as the Officine Jonike, the
company of “Vaporetto Allegro”, and above all, the well-known duo Giacomo Battaglia e Gigi Miseferi nel “Romanzo mitologico”. One must also not forget
relatively new acts like the “Banda Borbonica”, the recital “Pathos” by actress and singer Mariangela D’Abbraccio, the theatrical company Porta Cenere, the
“Giovanna D’Arco” of Elisabetta Pozzi. A number of works have been prepared and made exclusively for the Magna Graecia theatre festival which took place
in thirteen archaeological sites in the region: Roccelletta of Borgia (the Scolacium), Casignana (“Roman House”), Palmi, Monasterace , Diamante, Rosario,
Reggio (Castello Aragonese), Tropea, Crotone, Cassano, Lamezia Terme, Locri and Vibo Valentia.
The archaeological sites of the city where the shows were held, were made available by the Superintendence for the Cultural Heritage of Calabria. Public
turnout was 15 percent more compared to the previous edition. Commissioner Caligiuri notes with satisfaction that “we are very pleased with this increase
since it corresponds to an increase in visitors to archaeological sites detected throughout the year.” According to the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of
Calabria in the first half of 2013 there was, in fact, an increase in visitors of 5 percent when compared to 2012 –“the year in which there had been a significant
increase of 48 percent in visits to archaeological sites in Calabria, thanks to the regional project of education in archaeology “Calabria Jones” which has had
a remarkable success.”
Going back to the Magna Graecia theatre festival, Commissioner Caligiuri, on introducing the spectacle of Michele Placido in Reggio, confirmed the feelings
of the actor: “Despite the difficulties, this tenth edition has established itself as the best. Moreover, according to Michele Placido our “Magna Graecia” is judged in artistic circles of the capital to be the most interesting artistic event of the summer. This testimony is rewarding because it gives a qualified recognition
to the artistic director Giorgio Albertazzi.” Michele Placido also said another important thing in Reggio: “Calabria is one of the few Italian regions to have been
able to spend EU funds wisely in the organising such a show.”

regionale è stato realizzato il programma di studio “Calabresi nel
mondo” con l’obiettivo di “valorizzare la
nostra cultura – ha detto il Dirigente generale Francesco Zoccali - tra i calabresi
che, nel corso degli anni, hanno lasciato
la nostra regione, il più delle volte per necessità lavorative, trasferendosi all’estero.
Un’iniziativa con la quale abbiamo puntato a coinvolgere le giovani generazioni,
quelle che non avevano ancora conosciuto la nostra terra, a venire a visitarla, scoprendone, attraverso uno studio mirato, la
storia e le tradizioni”. L’iniziativa, infatti,
coordinata dalla Dirigente del Servizio
“Emigrazione” Teresa Nicolazzi e realizzato dal suo Ufficio, in attuazione della
l.r. n. 54/ 2012, ha avuto come obiettivo
il recupero dell’identità culturale calabrese e, allo stesso tempo, la memoria
delle origini. Si è trattato, in sostanza, di
venti studenti, di origine calabrese, che,
provenienti da Argentina, Australia, Belgio, Brasile, Canada, Francia, Venezuela,
hanno avuto la possibilità di arricchire le
proprie conoscenze e gli studi di storia
e di letteratura calabrese, attraverso l’approfondimento della lingua e dei dialetti
locali. Attraverso anche le visite guidate
i giovani hanno avuto modo di conoscere
luoghi d’arte, siti archeologici e tradizioni a loro sconosciuti ma tanto cari ai loro
avi. I giovani, a conclusione di questa loro
presenza in Calabria, sono stati ricevuti,
a pal. “Campanella” di Reggio, sede del
Consiglio regionale calabrese dalle massime autorità istuzionali. In una giornata
dedicata, sono stati proprio i Presidenti
del Comsiglio regionale Francesco Talarico e quello della Giunta Giuseppe Scopelliti a fare gli onori di casa.
Presenti anche il Consigliere regionale delegato all’Emigrazione Alfonsino
Grillo, Mons. Antonino Denisi, membro
della Consulta regionale dell’Emigrazione, in rappresentanza di “Migrantes”,a
ricevere i giovani protagonisti del “Programma di studio”, realizzato con la
collaborazione dell’Università della
Calabria,dell’Università per stranieri
“Dante Alighieri” di Reggio Calabria.
“Questi giovani – ha detto il Presidente
del Consiglio regionale Talarico - potranno ora raccontare la Calabria autentica, una regione che, pur tra mille limiti
e difficoltà, sta cercando di risollevarsi e
di costruire un futuro diverso cogliendo
appieno le sfide economiche e culturali
dell’attuale momento storico. Si tratta di

Questa esperienza costituisce anche un
momento di arricchimento umano e culturale”. Infine, Talarico ha fatto un augurio ai ragazzi per un “futuro costellato di
successi”.
IL Presidente della Regione Scopelliti,
invece, ha detto che “Questo progetto ci
offre la possibilità di continuare a proseguire un rapporto anche con le nuove
generazioni di emigrati calabresi. C’è una
ferma intenzione di rilanciare un’adeguata strategia che ci consenta di rendere
sempre più duraturo questo rapporto, evi-
tando di disperdere il grande patrimonio
umano e professionale rappresentato dalle tante comunità di Calabresi nel Mondo.
La vostra presenza in questi giorni – ha
sottolineato Scopelliti - è la testimonianza
più bella di quanto sia utile questo progetto, seguito con passione dal consigliere
Alfonsino Grillo. Avete avuto la possibilità di conoscere direttamente e non solo
attraverso i racconti dei vostri genitori
o nonni, la storia, le tradizioni e la cultura della Calabria. C’è un percorso ed
una strategica ben definita che vogliamo
portare avanti, ossia quella di rilanciare
e rendere duraturo questo progetto, arrivando a coinvolgere, grazie anche alla
disponibilità delle università, molti più
giovani, proprio per rafforzare quel legame di fratellanza e coinvolgimento che ci

‘Calabresi nel mondo’ is a programme of study organised by the Presidential
department of the Regional Council in order to promote our region’s culture
“with those who have left our shores and settled abroad over the years, mostly
for better job opportunities”, said the Director General Francesco Zoccali .
He continued, “it is an initiative with which we aim to involve the younger
generation, those who had not yet set foot on our land, to come and visit,
discovering, through a targeted itinerary, our history and traditions.”
This initiative was coordinated by the Emigration Officer Teresa Nicolazzi
and coordinated by her department, implementing lr n . 54/2012, and which
had as its main objective the safeguarding of the cultural identity of Calabria,
while at the same time, preserving the memory of its origins. The group was
composed of twenty students, all of Calabrian origin, which arrived from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France and Venezuela. During
their stay, they had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge and studies
in Calabrian history and literature through the study of language and local
dialects. Moreover, through guided tours, young people got to know places of
art, archaeological sites and traditions unknown to them but so dear to their
ancestors. At the end of their presence in our region, the young people, were
received by the highest institutional authorities at Palazzo Campanella in
Reggio, the seat of the Regional Council of Calabria. In a day dedicated specifically to them, Presidents Francesco Talarico and Giuseppe Scopelliti were
in attendance to do the honours. Also present were the Regional Councillor
Delegate for Emigration Alfonsino Grillo and Mons Antonino Denisi, a member of the Regional Emigration, representing “Migrantes”, to to receive the
young participants of this programme of study, carried out in collaboration
with the University of Calabria and the University for foreigners “Dante Ali-

and, secondly, it is an opportunity to raise awareness of our land, the natural
beauty, its homeliness and the hospitality of our people. This experience is
also a time of human and cultural enrichment.” Finally, Talarico wished the
boys a “future full of success.” Furthermore, the President of the region, Scopelliti, asserted: “This project gives us the opportunity to continue to pursue a
relationship with the new generations of immigrants from Calabria. There is
a firm intention to come up with an adequate strategy that allows us to create
this everlasting relationship, avoiding the dispersion of the great human and
professional heritage represented by the many communities of Calabrians in
the world. Your presence during these few days are the most beautiful testimony of how useful this project can be, and how it has been closely followed with passion by Councillor Alfonsino Grillo. You had the opportunity
to come face-to-face with the history, traditions and culture of Calabria and
not only through the stories of your parents or grandparents. There is a path
and a well-defined strategy that we want to pursue, which is to revive and
make permanent this project, targeting, thanks to the availability of universities, many youngsters in order to strengthen the bond of brotherhood and
involvement that unites us despite the distance.” The Chief Executive Officer
Grillo focused on collaboration with the Universities of Calabria: “The collaboration with the University of Calabria and the University for Foreigners
of Reggio ‘Dante Alighieri’, was born with the aim of working in synergy to
promote knowledge of Italian culture and the reality of Calabria with respect
to the descendants of second and third generation Italian emigrants abroad.”
After the meeting at the headquarters of the Regional Council which currently
also hosts the Bronzi di Riace, the students went to Palmi to visit the Villa
“Leonidas Repaci” and the Calabrian Museum of Ethnography and Folklore “R.Corso”, accompanied by the Vice President of the Regional Council
for Emigration Antonio Minasi and subsequently were in Vibo Valentia for
a guided visit of the State Archaeological Museum “Vito Capialbi” and the
Norman-Swabian Castle of the city.

Un momento dell’incontro Reggina - Crotone
Sport e Calabria, un binomio vincente se consideriamo i tanti
campioni che da sempre hanno contribuito ai successi azzurri,
dal calcio alla boxe, dal rugby al Judo, solo per citare alcune
discipline. La Giunta regionale è sensibile alle tante esigenze,
piccole o grandi, delle nostre società sportive. Società, ovviamente, costrette anch’esse a fare i conti con notevoli sacrifici
per sostenere la crescita del movimento giovanile e gli alti costi
legati al mondo del professionismo.
Un’attenzione dimostrata anche dall’approvazione a inizio legislatura di una legge che promuove lo sport come strumento
essenziale per il miglioramento dello stile di vita ed elemento
fondamentale per la formazione dei soggetti e che tuteli e salvaguardi il patrimonio dell’edilizia sportiva.

Per questo, si guarda sempre con entusiasmo ai risultati ottenuti dai nostri campioni e dalle squadre calabresi: una galassia
composta da circa centomila atleti, più di duemila società e oltre quattordicimila dirigenti, secondo un rapporto Coni-Istat. E
anche se il calcio, c’è da scommettere, la farà da padrone come
sempre tra i gusti degli appassionati calabresi, sono tanti i team
di “casa nostra” che nella stagione imminente si misureranno nei
vari campionati nazionali.
Oltre alla Reggina e al Crotone che militano nel prestigioso torneo di Serie B di Lega Calcio, da cui si attende un bel piazzamento, o meglio ancora, una promozione in A, le sorti del calcio
professionista sono affidate al Catanzaro che giocherà per il secondo anno consecutivo in Prima divisione di Lega Pro (la vecchia Serie C1); dal Cosenza e dalla Vigor Lamezia, in seconda
divisione di Lega Pro (l’ex C2).
Ma il livello più alto, tra i professionisti, è ancora una volta rappresentato dal Volley maschile e in particolare da quel miracolo
chiamato “Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia” che anche quest’anno
giocherà nella massima serie del campionato di Pallavolo italiano. L’anno scorso, un brillantissimo nono posto e l’accesso
alle finali play-off; quest’anno, dopo i tentennamenti del patron
Pippo Callipo, che in un primo momento aveva dichiarato di non
riuscire più a sopportare i costi del massimo campionato e aveva
annunciato di ripartire solo col settore giovanile, i giallorossi di
Vibo sono pronti per la settima stagione in Serie A.
Serie A2 invece per la squadra maschile di Volley, Caffè Aiello
Corigliano: i rossoneri puntano a un campionato più che onorevole, forti anche di un pubblico davvero caloroso. Chi festeggia
una promozione e torna nella Serie A2 Silver è la Viola Basket
di Reggio Calabria che per tanti anni, tra la fine degli anni 90
e i primi del 2000, è stata tra le più importanti protagoniste del
Basket italiano, raggiungendo più volte i play-off e fornendo alla
nazionale italiana un contributo significativo in termini di giovani talenti. Oggi, dopo il buio degli scorsi anni, la Viola è tornata
a splendere. Ma il progetto di crescita della Viola è da spalmare
negli anni.
Tornando al Volley, femminile stavolta, c’è da osservare con attenzione il campionato che attende le ragazze del Soverato: una
Serie A2 con team blasonati come Pavia, Montichiari, Bolzano
e Rovigo. Infine, alcune notizie che danno lustro alla nostra regione e testimoniano come la Calabria sia una terra di grandi
talenti sportivi.
La prima riguarda la scherma femminile e in particolare Arianna
Errigo, originaria di Condofuri, che, dopo i successi ottenuti alle
Olimpiadi di Londra 2012, ha conquistato un altro grandissimo
risultato: oro ai Campionati del Mondo che si sono tenuti lo

scorso agosto a Budapest. Un’altra campionessa, la catanzarese Martina Le Pera,
ha vinto, poche settimane fa, la medaglia
d’Argento ai Campionati Europei Cadetti
di Taekwondo di Bucarest.
A Feltre, in provincia di Belluno, invece,
la gioiese Palma De Leo, si è confermata
campionessa italiana nei dieci km di corsa
su strada, mentre altri due titoli italiani ju-
niores sono stati conquistati a Roma dalla
Unione Tiro a Segno di Reggio Calabria
composta da Claudia Serranò, Sara e Antonella Costantino. In ultimo, gloria anche
per due giovanissimi campioni calabresi:
Antonino Barillà e Marco Laganà.
Il primo, ha vinto la medaglia d’oro alle
recenti Universiadi a Kazan, in Russia nel
tiro al volo; Laganà, invece, da capita-
no, ha condotto alla vittoria la Nazionale
italiana di basket nei campionati europei
Under 20. A tutti, ma proprio a tutti, un
grazie di cuore e “forza Calabria”!

CALABRIAN SPORT: USHERING IN A NEW YEAR FILLED WITH RECORD FIGURES

Sport and Calabria - a winning combination if we had to stop to consider the many champions that have always contributed to the azzurri’s success, from
football to boxing, from rugby to judo, to name just a few disciplines. The Regional Council is sensitive to the many needs of our sport clubs, irrespective of
their size. Local sport associations are faced with considerable daily sacrifices to support the growth of the region’s youth and the high costs associated with the
world of professionalism. This attention has been amply demonstrated by the adoption of a law at the start of the new legislature that promotes sport as an essential tool for the improvement of one’s lifestyle and a key element for the formation of individuals by protecting and safeguarding the region’s sport heritage.
It is due to the above that one always looks avidly at the results obtained by our Calabrian champions and teams - a family composed of about one hundred
thousand athletes, more than two thousand companies and more than fourteen thousand executives, according to a report commissioned by CONI-ISTAT. Even
though football, as can be expected, will feature most prominently amongst the sporting tastes of Calabrian fans, there are many home teams from a variety
of disciplines that will be competing in the various national championships this coming season. In addition to Reggina and Crotone who ply their trade in the
prestigious tournament of Lega Calcio’s Serie B , where one always hopes for a nice placement in the final standings, or better still, a promotion in Serie A, the
fate of professional football is also entrusted to Catanzaro who will play for the second consecutive year in the Pro League First Division (the old Serie C1) and
Cosenza and Vigor Lamezia, who will be playing in the second division of Lega Pro (formerly C2). However, the highest level amongst the region’s professionals will once again be represented by that miracle called “Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia” which this year will once again play in the top flight of the men’s
Italian Volleyball Championship . Last year they ended the season in a brilliant ninth place and access to the final play-offs. This year, after the owner Callipo
Pippo, had initially claimed that he could not bear the costs of the top flight anymore (and had nearly decided to only fund the youth sector), the Giallorossi of
Vibo are ready for their seventh season in Serie A.
Serie A2 instead for the men’s volleyball team, the rossoneri of Coffee Aiello Corigliano: a more than honourable championship to be competing in and supported by a strong and enthusiastic fan base. Violet Basket of Reggio Calabria this year celebrate their return to the Serie A2 Silver which for so many years,
during the late 90s and early 2000’s, was among the most important protagonists of Italian Basketball, reaching more the play-offs on several occasions and
providing a significant contribution to the Italian national team in terms of talent. Today, after the darkness of the past years, the Viola is back, determined to
do well. However, one should keep their feet on the ground since the team’s project is spread over a span of a number of years.
Returning to volleyball, the women’s league this time, one should keep an eye on the championship that awaits the Soverato girls: Series A2 teams of the calibre
of Pavia, Montichiari, Bolzano and Rovigo. Finally, some news that gives our region that extra lustre and demonstrates how the land of Calabria is a region
made up of an abundance of sporting talent. The first concerns fencing – the women’s teams in particular - where Arianna Errigo, originally from Condofuri,
who after the successes of the 2012 London Olympics, has won another great result : gold at the World Championships that were held last August in Budapest.
Another champion, the Catanzarese Martina Le Pera, won the silver medal in Taekwondo at the Junior European Championships organised in Bucharest a few
weeks ago. Also, in Feltre, in the province of Belluno, the Gioiese Palma De Leo, has been confirmed the Italian champion in the 10km run outdoors, while two
other Italian junior titles were won in Rome by the Unione Tiro e Segno of Reggio Calabria, composed of Claudia Serranò, & Sara and Antonella Constantine.
Finally, glory for two young Calabrian athletes: Antonino Barilla and Marco Lagana . The first , won the gold medal at the recent World
University Games in Kazan, Russia in volleyball; Lagana, as captain, led the Italian national U-20 basketball team in the European Championships.
