Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ –
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for your presence at our parish! We gather every day to pray and ask God to
come close to us and lead and guide us by the Spirit.
We call on God’s help for those caught in the tragedy of war and terrorism all over the
world, from the recent attacks in Beirut and Paris to ongoing crisis in Syria.
We call on God’s help for those who are far from home, especially those who serve in foreign lands. We pray, too, for the hungry, the homeless, unemployed or underemployed, those are
who sick in body, mind or spirit, and for those who feel burdened by life’s decisions.
These may not appear events or occasions of gratitude. They do call out, however, for deeper reflection. Gratitude is more than a feeling or a word of thanks. Gratitude is a way of living
which fundamentally presumes to call upon the grace of God and is relentless about living in dependence on God's grace.
The psalmist, for example, will often lament a terrible situation for which it would be difficult to be possessed of gratitude. But the psalmist nevertheless makes the lament to God and with
daring honesty continues to call upon God's grace.
For thirty years, Mrs. Sarah Joseph Hale, the editor of Godey's Lady's Book, promoted the
idea of a national Thanksgiving Day. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln finally set aside the last
Thursday of November at a pivotal point in the life of the nation. In July of 1863, the Battle of
Gettysburg resulted in the loss of some 60,000 young men from the north and south.
That horrific battle was not the occasion for thanksgiving. Yet, perhaps, without the contrast of that terrible experience of brother killing brother to the experience of living in peace as
brothers and sisters, the Proclamation of Thanksgiving Day may have not seemed as urgent.
In gratitude, let us urgently call upon God’s grace to give us thankful hearts this Thanksgiving and every day. For what are you grateful?
May the LORD bless you and keep you! May the LORD let his face shine upon you and be
gracious to you! May LORD look upon you with kindness and give you peace!

We start after the Parade passes Columbus Circle. The Parish Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance. One Daily Mass will be celebrated on the Friday after Thanksgiving at 10 AM. Except
for these masses, the Church will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Friday.

"Chuck" the Giving Turkey is back! Every year, MSG requests specific donation items, which are written on Chuck's
feathers. Come visit Chuck and take a feather with the item
you wish to donate (he sits at a display table towards the
back of the church by the column on the left side of Fr.
Hecker's tomb). Drop off all donation items at the Parish
Center no later than November 23rd (Monday before
Thanksgiving). MSG brings all donated items on their annual mission trip in August to the Hogar Belen Homes for Disabled and Abandoned children in Nicaragua. Thank you for

Arts and Artists at St. Paul will present its third Broadway’s
Future Songbook concert of this season on Monday, November 30th at 6 PM at The New York Public Library for the
Performing Arts at Lincoln Center - Bruno Walter Auditorium - 111 Amsterdam Avenue (just south of 65th Street).
This month’s concert will feature the songs of the awardwinning songwriter Matthew Lee Robinson. We are very
lucky to have performers and musicians from some of
Broadway’s top shows lending us their talents making these
concerts so very popular. This series is produced, directed
and hosted by John Znidarsic. Admission is FREE and seating is on a first come-first serve basis.

A Holiday Celebration with the Mary McBride Band
Fordham University Lessons and Carols

Seeking Confirmation as an Adult in 2016?

For many reasons, some of us do not receive Confirmation
as teenagers. If you are seeking Confirmation now, perhaps
because you are planning to be married sometime after Easter 2016, now is the time to prepare. A series of classes will
be conducted by Fr. Tom Holahan, CSP on Saturdays from
10 AM to 11:30 AM. Classes begin at the parish center (405
W 59th St) on January 23th and end on March 19th. It will
be possible to make up classes if necessary. Confirmation is
set for sometime in the spring of 2016. If plan to make the
Saturday morning schedule or have questions, please contact

Why Do People Become Catholic?
People decide to become Catholics because they hope to
find in the community of the Catholic Church something
they are looking for. During a ceremony on Nov. 1 we welcomed eight people into our adult Christian initiation program. We asked them to tell us what they are looking for.
Here are the answers some of them gave:
“I ask to be a part of a community, a community bound together by a shared belief that God is the loving Creator of
all that is, that Jesus is the Messiah and that through our
faith, we will be saved. Although I am young, I am the point
in my life where I know that being a member of the Catholic
Church is what I truly want, without a doubt, and I feel
blessed for realizing that. So, I ask to be accepted by the
Church, in time, as one of it's members.” - John Wilson

Apostolist Thanks You for Your Generosity!
Like the woman in the gospel who gave everything, parishioners of the Church of St. Paul also pulled from their jars of
generosity to share in Apostolist's ministry. Your generous
contribution of $3680 in last weekend's second collection
will be dedicated to our financial commitment and partnership with Habitat for Humanity NYC.
On Saturday, November 14th, eight young adults had the
unique opportunity to assist with the construction of two
houses in Queens that will eventually belong to families in
great need. In the words of one of the volunteers, "The experience was humbling. Given one day off and with a few
simple tools and a few new friends, we made that much of a
difference in the lives of two families."
Thank you for your contribution to making this rewarding
opportunity possible, and for ultimately improving the lives
of the families who will live in the Habitat homes.

Queridas hermanas y hermanos en Cristo ¡Feliz Día de Acción de Gracias!
Gracias por su presencia en nuestra parroquia! Nos reunimos todos los días para orar y pedirle a Dios que
se acerca a nosotros y nos guíe con su Espíritu.
Hacemos la oración a la ayuda de Dios para aquellos atrapados en la tragedia de la guerra y el terrorismo
en todo el mundo, a partir de los recientes ataques en Beirut y París a la crisis en Siria.
Hacemos la oración a la ayuda de Dios para aquellos que están lejos de su hogar, especialmente los que
sirven en el extranjero. Oramos, también, para los hambrientos, los sin hogar, desempleados o subempleados, esos
son quienes enfermos en el cuerpo, la mente o el espíritu, y para aquellos que se sienten agobiados por las decisiones de la vida.
Estos no pueden aparecer eventos u ocasiones de gratitud. Ellos llaman a cabo, sin embargo, para una reflexión más profunda. La gratitud es más que un sentimiento o una palabra de agradecimiento. La gratitud es una
manera de vivir que fundamentalmente supone hacer un llamamiento a la gracia de Dios y es implacable sobre la
vida en la dependencia de la gracia de Dios.
El salmista, por ejemplo, a menudo se lamentan una situación terrible para los que sería difícil estar
