We would like to thank all of our parishioners and visitors for being generous with your weekly donations.
It is such a help to our parish.
Our collection for the week of July 27, 2014 was $10,971.65.
May God bless you for your continued support.

Dear Parishioners,
Please be aware that the Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus of the Old Catholic Church located at 11553 Leffingwell
Rd. in Norwalk is not a part of the Roman Catholic Church. There exists only two Roman Catholic parishes
in Norwalk: St. Linus and St. John of God. St. Raphael Korean Catholic Center - within the boundaries of St.
Linus Parish - is a Roman Catholic pastoral center that provides for the ministerial and sacramental needs of
the Korean community. The only Church that a Catholic should receive the seven Sacraments from is the Roman Catholic Church. Those who have a special devotion to St. Jude Thaddeus are invited to pray at the shrine
inside St. Linus and participate in the Novena to St. Jude Thaddeus every Tuesday at 7:00p.m.
Queridos Feligreses,
Gracias.

DECIMOCTAVO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
GRACE IS EVERYWHERE
Grace is everywhere. People of faith act on this
belief. As Christians we are called to reach deeply
into ourselves and find God’s presence there. We are
called to reach outside ourselves and find God there,
too.
The reality of grace has sustained and nourished
people beyond numbering. The church never tires of
telling the story of the loaves and fishes. It is narrated no less than six times in the four Gospels. We imagine the hesitant apostles reaching into the baskets
and finding bread, always more bread. We anticipate
the ending. The apostles will wear out before the
bread runs out.
At another time and place, Isaiah also spoke of
an abundance, this time of water, sweet honey, and
rich milk. Always, always God is a gift-giver, and
we the receivers. Our response is doxology, or
praise. In the second reading Paul provides the words
and attitude. Praise is everywhere.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — All you who thirst, come to the
water! You without money, come to the feast!
(Isaiah 55:1-3).
Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers
all our needs (Psalm 145).
Second Reading — Nothing can separate us from
the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:35, 37-39).

twelve baskets of what was left over (Matthew 14:13
-21).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Most parishes are now aware of the catechumenate and the journey of new faithful in the RCIA, but
this form of sacramental initiation disappeared from
view in the thirteenth century along with many other
ancient practices. Life back then was hard, and often
too short, and priests were increasingly insistent
about the responsibility of parents to baptize children
in danger of death. Since everyone in that society
was under unimaginable threat from famine, warfare,
and plague, the liturgical rites changed quickly. Everyone was in danger of death all the time. No longer
were babies immersed in fonts, being lowered into
the water, although the ritual books never backed
down from immersion. Infusion was the new way, a
simple pouring of a few drops of water on the child’s
forehead.
The catechumenate collapsed, being reduced to
the recitation of the Creed and an Our Father at every
baptism. Amazingly, any provision for adult baptism
was shelved, so that as late as the 1950s, a person
being baptized was presumed to be an infant, unable
to answer for him or herself. Questions of creed and
commitment were put to the godparents, not to the
person being baptized. Even Dorothy Day and
Thomas Merton, famous adult converts, remained
mute at their baptisms while their sponsors answered
for them. In hindsight all this appears strikingly odd,
yet it was accepted as the way things were. We have
good reason to give thanks for the vigorous reforms
of the last fifty years!

PRAYER AND HUMILITY
Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword;
wear humility rather than fine clothes.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

sed, ¡vengan a tomar agua! (Isaías 55:1-3).

Segunda lectura — Nada podrá apartarnos del amor
de Dios que encontramos en Cristo Jesús
(Romanos 8:35, 37-39).
Evangelio — Todos comieron hasta saciarse
(Mateo 14:13-21).

reyes incas, Francisco Tito Yupanqui buscó esculpir

Youth Ministry/LIFE TEEN
LIFE Nights are meetings that immediately follow the Youth Mass on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:45 PM
and take place in the parish hall and are an integral part of a comprehensive youth ministry experience. Teens
in preparation for confirmation are expected to attend all nights. Focus for Life Nights include: Prayer & Worship, Community Building (Social), and Pastoral Care/Issue Nights. Our Confirmation preparation sessions
are more weighted on the catechetical component of youth ministry, but many components overlap the various
meetings.
Summer Schedule

August 10 – Off site family dinner/fundraiser: Panda Express, Imperial Highway (see attached flyer)
August 17 - Close Summer Activities Talent Show/Karaoke/lip sync
Sponsorship Lottery
This entry header has been present for a few weeks with no explanation. We apologize and have struggled to
find a catchy name for the campaign. The Donation Loteria as it has also been referred to has become a huge
success. We are grateful to those members of the community who have already drawn their number and contributed their donation. Thank you!
Youth Ministry has been in search of 50 donors who would be willing to donate up to $50, but are open to the
excitement of the chance to donate less. There are numbered cards 1-50. Donors draw a card and the number
on the card determines the donation. If you draw the number 6, you pay $6. 46, $46. It’s that simple! Not only that, 6 of the highest 7 numbers have already been selected, as have 6 of the first 7. Half of our donors have
already stepped forward. Will you be one? Draw your number after LIFE TEEN Mass any Sunday this summer or call the youth ministry office to get your name placed in a square.
Sacramental Preparation for High School Teens (Confirmation & First Communion)
Registration is Available NOW! Teens interested in getting involved in confirmation MUST first register for
youth ministry. Young ladies needing to register for youth ministry in order to schedule their Quinceañera are
also asked to register for youth ministry. All registration is now being handled through the Religious Education
office. A limited number of hard copies are available in the parish office or in the church.
Stay Connected
We in youth ministry are on a mission to stay more connected to our teens and their families than ever before.
If you have a Facebook profile please “like” our page at “Linus LIFE TEEN.” For those of you looking for
more frequent reminders that pertain to teens in youth ministry, phase one and phase 2, you can do so by sending a text to 562-741-8966 with the message “@linu” or send an email to [email protected] and get

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
DID YOU KNOW?
Summertime, safe time
All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese must undergo fingerprinting and criminal background
checks. Archdiocesan guidelines and abuse prevention training programs currently in use in the Archdiocese
emphasize the importance of parents knowing who has access to their children at school and other churchsponsored activities. Summertime is here, and parents should remain vigilant regarding who is granted access to their children. Make sure camp counselors have undergone criminal background checks. And, make
sure you know the camp’s “daily routine.” In particular, make sure that no camp activity results in a child
being left alone with one adult. All activities should be supervised by more than one adult, and the camp
should be open to unannounced drop-in visits from parents. For more information email: Dn. Jaime Abrera,
Fingerprint Department,[email protected]
