Stations of the Cross
Could you walk a mile in Jesus' shoes? The Stations of the Cross brings us closer to Christ as we
meditate on the great love he showed for us in his most sorrowful passion. Tradition traces this
loving tribute to our Lord back to the Blessed Mother’s retracing her son’s last steps along what
became known as the Via Dolorosa {the sorrowful way} on his way to his Crucifixion at Calvary .
PLEASE COME PRAY THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS EVERY FRIDAY DURING
LENT AT 6:30 PM IN OUR CHURCH.

The Season of Lent III
El Tiempo de Cuaresma III
For the previous two articles, this column has offered a
deeper understanding of the Lenten Season through a deeper
understanding of our baptism. The Triune God (Father, Son
and Holy Spirit) welcomes and draws us into divine passionate love and perfect communion of life. This communion
also unites us to all humanity and all creation. Our baptism
commits us to sharing this divine love and communion with
all. Lent prepares us to renew our baptismal promises at
Easter.
En los dos artículos anteriores , esta columna ha ofrecido una

Catholic social teaching is at the core of our identity as
God’s People. The “common good” is a divine law of creation recognizing that God has provided for the basic human
needs of all people. When people are denied their basic human needs, creation is distorted. We call this distortion
“sin”. As God’s People, we are responsible for restoring
creation to its divine intention.
La enseñanza social católica es el núcleo de nuestra identidad
como pueblo de Dios. El "bien común" es una ley divina de la
creación de reconocer que Dios ha provisto para las necesidades
humanas básicas de todas las personas. Cuando las personas se

The Lenten Season is also a season especially for the catechumens. Now officially designated as The Elect, Lent is
their final time of spiritual preparation before entering into
the full sacramental life at the Easter Vigil. The Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults designates three Scrutiny
Rites as a major component of their Lenten journey. For the
Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, we celebrate these
“scrutinies” for the elect.
El tiempo de Cuaresma es también una temporada especial para
los catecúmenos . Ahora oficialmente como El Elegido, la Cuaresma es el tiempo final de la preparación espiritual antes de entrar en la vida sacramental en la Vigilia Pascual . El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos designa tres Ritos Escrutinios como
un componente importante de su itinerario cuaresmal . Para el
tercero, cuarto y quinto domingo de Cuaresma , celebramos estos
"escrutinios " para los elegidos.
What are the “scrutinies?” The RCIA describes them as
“rites for self-searching and repentance and above all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal
all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect;
to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and
good. For the scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the
elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them
against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who
is the way, the truth, and the life.”(#141)
¿Cuáles son los "escrutinios ? " RICA los describe como " ritos
de auto- búsqueda y arrepentimiento , y sobre todo con un propósito espiritual. Los escrutinios significan descubrir , entonces
sanar todo lo que es débil , defectuoso o pecaminoso en los corazones de los elegidos , para llevar a cabo y fortalecer todo lo que
es recto, fuerte y bueno . Los escrutinios se celebran con el fin de
proteger a los elegidos del poder del pecado y de Satanás , para
protegerlos contra la tentación , y para darles fuerza en Cristo,
que es el camino, la verdad y la vida. " (# 141 )
The Catholic faithful are called to walk with the elect in
their journey of spiritual cleansing and growth. Through the
ancient penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and charitable
works, we search our own hearts and souls for those areas of
darkness still in need of God’s bountiful mercy and healing.
As the elect pray that their sins and weaknesses be removed
to embrace the life of faith, so we make the same journey,
removing any spiritual darkness in our own lives. At Easter
the whole Church stands renewed in the waters and the
promises of baptism for our salvation and the salvation of
the world.
Los fieles católicos están llamados a caminar con los elegidos en
su camino de purificación y crecimiento espiritual. A través de
las antiguas prácticas penitenciales de la oración , el ayuno y las
obras de caridad , buscamos en nuestros propios corazones y almas aquellas áreas de la oscuridad todavía necesitan de la misericordia y sanación abundante de Dios. Como los elegidos rezan

The Diocese of Joliet Council of Catholic Nurses is
pleased to announce the acceptance of applications for the annual $500 nursing education scholarship.
Applicants should be enrolled in their senior year of
a Baccalaureate nursing program for Fall 2014 and

LENTEN REGULATIONS
1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is
bound to abstain from meat on Ash
Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59
years of age is bound to fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday.
3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full
meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each
one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full
meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two
days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.
When health or ability to work would be seriously affected,
the law does not oblige.
4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is
seriously sinful.
5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church
year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop
and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious
prayer, and a performance of works of charity and
mercy.
DÍAS DE AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA
•El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo, son días de
ayuno y abstinencia.
•Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia
de carne. Pero el Episcopado Mexicano ha dispuesto
que: “se puede suplir la abstinencia de carne, excepto la
del Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo, por:
∗la abstinencia de aquellos alimentos que para cada
uno significan especial agrado, sea por la materia o
por el modo de preparación;
∗o por una especial obra de caridad;
∗o por una especial obra de piedad;
∗o por otro significativo sacrificio voluntario”.
•Sujeto de la ley del ayuno y la abstinencia:
- Abstinencia de carne: todos los que han cumplido 14 años.
El hecho de tener 60 años o más, no exime de esta ley de abstinencia.
- Ayuno: todos los que han cumplido 18 años, hasta el comienzo de los 60.
•Lo más importante al hacer este tipo de practicas es darle sentido verdadero: por una parte someter la voluntad
para fortalecerla con virtudes como la templanza, la sobriedad y la humildad, y por otra, favorecer el ejercicio
de la caridad, pues todos los sacrificios que se realizan
deben apuntar a hacer un bien o un servicio al prójimo y
a toda la Iglesia. Hacer sacrificios y penitencia por costumbre o porque todos lo hacen, no tiene sentido y no
favorecen el crecimiento del hombre, que en conclusión
es lo que se pretende.
