Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary:
H
aving looked at the first and foundational commandment last
week, and before going on to the rest, perhaps it would be opportune to examine the Ten Commandments in general. Years ago in
Rome, one of my fellow students, in presenting an exam to his professor, was asked a very simple question—“Can you name the Ten
Commandments? Would you believe that this seminarian, so full of
complicated theology, could not name them all? The professor was
making a point—we may know much about a lot of things but often forget what
matters most.
T
he Ten Commandments matter because they remain the bedrock foundation of the moral life.
They are valid for Christians, Jews, Muslims, and indeed, for all peoples of all times and all
generations because they are hard-wired into the conscience of every human being who ever existed. The Church calls them the Natural Law. The Decalogue, as they are known in the Bible, far
from being a cold list of forbidden things—“Thou shalt not!—if properly understood and lived
faithfully, is actually a prescription for LOVE—Thou shalt love!” They deepen our love for God and
for one another.
lthough originally given to the chosen people Israel, they are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. It was
our Lord Himself who helps us understand their true meaning because He most perfectly
summed up the entire Law of God by telling us to love God above all things and to love our neighbor as ourselves, or better yet, as He loves us. They were written by the very finger of God upon
tablets, it is true, but they are equally inscribed on our hearts, because they are preeminently the
Word of God through Whom we were created.
e find two listings of the ten commandments in the Bible, the first in Exodus 20:1-17 and
the second in Deuteronomy 5: 6-22. Although identical in their message, these two versions have led to variations in numbering and wording. But basically, the Ten Commandments
can be broken down into two parts. The first 3 commandments speak of our obligation to love God
above all things. The following 7 commandments teach us how we are to love our neighbor. Taken
together, they are indeed commandments, that is, obligatory and not optional, as they form the
primary road map for daily Christian living. They provide the easiest way to examine our consciences in order to make a good confession. Far from being a burden, they are meant to liberate
us from what weighs us down, namely, our sins and their consequent sadness. An excellent spiritual exercise for all of us this week would be to look up the Ten Commandments in the Bible, or in
the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Can you still list them from memory? We may indeed
know much about many things but we often forget what matters most.

Q ueridas Familias y Amigos de Sta. Margarita Maria:
Después de examinar el primer y fundamental mandamiento la semana pasada, y antes de pasarlo a los demás, tal vez sería oportuno
analizar los Diez Mandamientos en general. Hace años, en Roma,
uno de mis compañeros de estudios, en la presentación de un examen a su profesor, se le pidió una pregunta muy simple “¿Puedes
nombrar los Diez Mandamientos?” ¿Puedes creer que este seminarista, tan lleno de teología complicada, no podía nombrarlos todos? El profesor estaba haciendo un punto que podemos saber mucho acerca de
muchas cosas, pero a menudo nos olvidamos de lo más importante.
L
os Diez Mandamientos son importantes porque siguen siendo los cimientos sólidos
de la vida moral. Son válidas para los Cristianos, Judíos, Musulmanes, y de hecho,
para todos los pueblos de todos los tiempos y de todas las generaciones, porque son necesarios en la conciencia de cada ser humano que jamás haya existido. La Iglesia los llama a la Ley Natural. El Decálogo, como se les conoce en la Biblia, lejos de ser una lista
fría de las cosas—prohibidos “No harás! - Si bien entendida y vivida con fidelidad, en
realidad es una receta para el amor por AMOR—Amaras!” Ellos profundizan nuestro
amor por Dios y por los demás.

unque originalmente dado al pueblo elegido de Israel, que se cumplen en Jesucristo. Fue nuestro Señor mismo quien nos ayuda a entender su verdadero significado
porque lo más perfectamente posible resumir toda la Ley de Dios nos dice que amar a
Dios sobre todas las cosas y amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos, o mejor
aún, como Él nos ama. Fueron escritos por el dedo de Dios sobre tablas, es cierto, pero
están igualmente inscrito en nuestros corazones, porque son preeminentemente la Palabra de Dios por medio de quien hemos sido creados .

os encontramos con dos listados de ellos en la Biblia, la primera en Éxodo 20: 117 y la segunda en Deuteronomio 5:6-22. Aunque idénticos en su mensaje, estas dos versiones han dado lugar a variaciones en la numeración y redacción. Pero, básicamente, los Diez Mandamientos se puede dividir en dos partes. Los 3 primeros mandamientos hablan de nuestra obligación de amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas. Los siguientes 7 mandamientos nos enseñan cómo debemos amar a nuestro prójimo. Tomados en conjunto, son de hecho los mandamientos, es decir, obligatorio y no opcional, ya
que constituyen la hoja de ruta principal para la vida cristiana diaria . Ellos proporcionan la forma más fácil de examinar nuestras conciencias con el fin de hacer una buena
confesión . Lejos de ser una carga, que están destinados a liberarnos de lo que nos pesa ,
es decir , de nuestros pecados y su consiguiente tristeza. Un excelente ejercicio espiritual para todos nosotros esta semana sería la de buscar los Diez Mandamientos de la Biblia , o en el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica. ¿Es posible enumerarlos de memoria? Tal
vez lleguemos a saber mucho acerca de muchas cosas, pero a menudo olvidamos lo que

Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: Sacrosanctum Concilium
When we walk into our Church building for Sunday Mass and take part in the liturgy, most
of us know that Jesus Christ is present to us in the Eucharist. However, as you read paragraph seven of the Constitution on Sacred Liturgy, you will see that Christ is
also present in our Church, in the
priest celebrating the mass, in the
readings and in the Church, the Body
of Christ, all of us assembled together to celebrate.
7. To accomplish so great a
work, Christ is always present in
his Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations. He is present
in the sacrifice of the Mass, not
only in the person of his minister, “the same now offering, through the ministry of priests, who formerly offered himself on
the cross,” but especially under the Eucharistic species. By his power he is present in the
sacraments, so that when someone baptizes it is really Christ himself who baptizes. He is
present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy scriptures are read in
the Church. He is present, lastly, when the Church prays and sings, for he promised:
“Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of
them.” (Matthew 18:20).

women and foreigners as well. But merely
reading the Bible is not enough and could be
wrong. I will tell you how to dig deep into
Scripture and by doing so actually find words
to support Liberation instead of subjugation:
not just of women, but of all people.”

Ah yes! The beginning of Lent. If we embrace the Lenten season, we can experience a wonderful
cleansing that draws us closer to our Lord. On the other hand, we might be tempted to take the
easy way out by just giving up something conventional and miss the vastly more important
outcome of becoming more Christ-like. Let’s follow Christ’s example when he was tempted
by the Devil in the Gospel of Matthew. Just as Jesus shunned the Devil’s temptations,
let’s turn from the easy path and make this Lenten season a truly meaningful experience
as we make our way on our spiritual journey.
What will you do this Lenten season to grow closer to our Lord?

EL AMOR A LOS ENEMIGOS

Muchos sabemos la importancia que tiene la
lluvia y el sol para la humanidad y por eso
Dios nos la manda, y la manda a todos justos
y pecadores, creyentes y no creyentes, y lo hace porque El nos mira a todos de igual manera.
En el evangelio de hoy Jesús nos habla del
amor y el perdón.
Todos sabemos muy bien lo hermoso que es
el amor, ya sea que se ame a una madre, a un
amigo, a una esposa, a un novio etc. Cuando
se ama se siente uno feliz. Por contraste, todos sabemos también lo triste que es cuando
un amor se rompe, roto el amor, se deja que
los rencores o el odio se apoderen del corazón, entonces la persona pasa a ser una imagen perfecta del fraticida Caín que reflejaba
su infelicidad en el rostro. El odio destruye
por completo a las personas. A pesar de esto,
y aunque el amor felizmente existe entre nosotros, muchas veces preferimos dejar que
reine el odio y la venganza, como lo pueden
atestiguar tantas guerras sangrientas a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. Y no solo
las guerras horrorosas, sino tantos corazones
rotos por matrimonios que se destruyen, por
hogares donde no hay comprensión, por
amistades que se destrozan y por otras muchas razones que sería demasiado largo de
contar. Todos los seres humanos queremos
ser felices y muchos trabajamos por un mundo mejor, las lecturas de hoy nos hacen pensar, si muchas veces, no estaremos dejando a
un lado lo más esencial para esta felicidad y
ese mundo mejor.
El amor a Dios y al prójimo se encierra todos los Mandamientos.
Cristo nos dice, en una parte de su evangelio,
que el amor a Dios y al prójimo está encerrado todo, incluso la verdadera felicidad.
Somos santuario de Dios y debemos tener
mucho cuidado de no profanarlo porque es
sagrado. La única manera de no profanarlo es
amando, pero amando de verdad, incluso a
los enemigos, como lo hizo Cristo, de quien
somos y por quien llegamos al Padre, y que en
la hora de la cruz pidió perdón y hasta disculpó a quienes lo habían puesto el madero; como el propio Dios que hace salir el sol, da la
lluvia y hace que la tierra produzca lo mismo
para los buenos que para los malos, para
quienes lo aman lo mismo para quienes lo
aborrecen, porque Dios es amor y él solo sabe
amar.
El amor tiene muchas manifestaciones.
El amor tiene muchas manifestaciones, pero
seguramente que una de las más hermosas es
la que nos descubre el evangelio de hoy: la de
perdonar las ofensas, amar al enemigo, y aquí
radica precisamente la gran dificultad para
nosotros.
Cuando nos sentimos defraudados, despreciados y quizás hasta odiados, que difícil es
amar. Y, sin embargo, en eso consiste la santidad y el ser como Dios. Amar cuando se es
amado es muy fácil—hasta los paganos saben
hacerlo—amar sin ser amado es muy sublime,
solo las almas generosas saben hacerlo; amar
cundo se es odiado, oprimido, calumniado, es
divino, solo Dios y los que viven en El pueden
hacerlo.
Reflexión
Dios quiere que todo lo que hagamos sea
siempre con amor en el corazón, de lo contrario, nada nos sirve de nada. San Pablo
llega a decir que aun las obras más excelentes, como el darlo todo a los pobres, el
hablar lenguas de ángeles y santos, el dar
la vida por Cristo, si no están impregnadas
por el amor, de nada sirven.

Constitución sobre la Sagrada Liturgia: Sacrosanctum Concilium
Cuando entramos a nuestro edificio de la Iglesia para la Misa dominical y participamos
en la liturgia, la mayoría de nosotros sabemos que Jesucristo se nos hace presente en la
Eucaristía. Sin embargo, a medida que lee el párrafo siete de la Constitución sobre la
Sagrada Liturgia, se verá que Cristo está presente también en nuestra Iglesia, en el sacerdote que celebra la misa, en las lecturas y en la Iglesia, el Cuerpo de Cristo, todos
nosotros ensamblado juntos para celebrar.
7 . Para llevar a cabo una obra tan grande, Cristo está siempre presente en su Iglesia,

David Kennedy is an active parishioner at St. Matthew parish in
Long Beach and a long time member of the Archdiocesan Catholic Ministry with Lesbian & Gay Persons. For more than 10 years,
he has worked to evangelize the ‘lost sheep’ at Pride Festivals in
L.A., Long Beach, Oakland, and San Francisco. He has also
staffed booths at various religious education congresses.
2014 YOUTH DAY—March 13
Youth Day is for ALL TEENS in the 9-12th
grades and is held annually at the Anaheim
Convention Center. Around 15,000 high school
students from many different backgrounds
from throughout the Archdiocese—and beyond—come together to participate
in morning and afternoon workshops,
culminating in a Youth Rally.
Your $40 fee includes all conference activities and events,
pizza and bus transportation between SMM and Anaheim.
You’ll need to be at St. Margaret Mary by 5 AM.
We will return around 5 PM.
Forms are available in the parish or youth offices.
Submit your completed registration, permission slip and the $40
fee to the office by the deadline, Sunday, March 2nd.
Tickets are on a first come, first served basis.
Make checks payable to ST. MARGARET MARY PARISH with
YOUTH DAY on the memo line.

Día de la Juventud es para todos los adolescentes en los grados 9º a 12º y se
lleva a cabo anualmente en el Centro de Convenciones de Anaheim. Alrededor
de 15.000 estudiantes de secundaria de diferentes orígenes de todas las Arquidiócesis-y más allá-se reúnen para participar
en la mañana y talleres por la tarde,
culminando en un Rally de la Juventud.
Su cuota es de $40 incluye todas las actividades de conferencias y eventos, pizza y autobuses de

Our parish is blessed with many wonderful ministries that we
showcase three times a year to offer our parishioners the
opportunity to talk to those who are involved in these
Ministries. Find out if God is calling YOU to serve along with them.
We’ll be highlighting our service ministries such as
Christian Service and Homeless Ministry,
Eucharistic Ministers to the homes and hospitals,
Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus
