The ancient village, also known as
“Castle”, is nested within walls and is
accessible through the old doors: Porta
Alberti, Porta al Sole and Porta al Rivellino. Visitors can reach the village by
walking on the fascinating steep streets
called Costa Alberti and Costa Vecchia,
or through the more recently built Via
del Castello, as well as through the
funicular cabin originating in Piazza
Boccaccio. Certaldo has grown on top of
an ellipse shaped hill.
San Gimignano
San Gimignano rises on top of a hill
(334 meters) overseeing the entire Val
d’Elsa. During the hellenistic period
(III-II centuries b.C.) it was the home of
an etruscan village, but its famous history started around the X Century, when
it took the name of the Holy Bishop of
Modena: San Gimignano. During the
Middleage the town faced big growth
and in 1199 it became a Free Commune.
May 8th 1300 the town hosted Dante
Alighieri, ambassador of the Tuscan
Church’s Army.
