Veronica Kuehn Office Manager St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two FROM FR. BURT What is the Sign of Peace? It is an ancient rite of the Church, within the Mass, which is exchanged by clergy and laity in some form as a manifestation of our unity in Christ, of our brotherhood as Christian believers. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal describes the rite as follows: 82. There follows the Rite of Peace, by which the Church entreats peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family, and the faithful express to each other their ecclesial communion and mutual charity before communicating in the Sacrament. As for the actual sign of peace to be given, the manner is to be established by the Conferences of Bishops in accordance with the culture and customs of the peoples. However, it is appropriate that each person, in a sober manner, offer the sign of peace only to those who are nearest. The Congregation of Divine Worship recently made several practical recommendations for the sign of peace: First, while confirming the importance of the rite, it emphasized that “it is completely legitimate to affirm that it is not necessary to invite ‘mechanistically’ to exchange (the sign of) peace.” The rite is optional, the congregation reminded, and there certainly are times and places where it is not fitting. Its second recommendation was that as translations are made of the third typical edition of the Roman Missal, bishops’ conference should consider “changing the way in which the exchange of peace is made.” It suggested in particular that “familiar and worldly gestures of greeting” should be substituted with “other, more appropriate gestures.” The congregation for worship also noted that there are several abuses of the rite which are to be stopped: the introduction of a “song of peace,” which does not exist in the Roman rite; the faithful moving from their place to exchange the sign; the priest leaving the altar to exchange the sign with the faithful; and when, at occasions such as weddings or funerals, it becomes an occasion for congratulations or condolences. It should also be noted that it is entirely wrong to greet anyone during the distribution of Holy Communion, either coming or going to receive the Sacrament. The exchange of the Sign of Peace is given as a somber moment of acknowledging one’s fellow believers with a handshake or embrace or simply the words, “Peace be with you.” It is NOT to be a free -for-all, in which small-talk and superficial “How ya doin’?” and “High-fives” take place – this approach disturbs the necessary respect and reverence needed before the distribution of the Holy Communion, which is first and foremost about UNITY and PEACE with Christ. Pastoral Letter of Marriage August 17: Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: Reproductive Technology “The procreative capacity of man and woman should not be treated as just another means of technology, as also happens with in vitro fertilization (IVF) or cloning. When that happens, human life itself is degraded because it becomes, more and more, something produced or manufactured in various ways, ways that will only multiply as science advances. Children begin to be seen less as gifts received in a personal communion of mutual self-giving, and increasingly as a lifestyle choice, a commodity to which all consumers are entitled.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/ loveandlife/.
