Deutsche Auswandererhaus in Alicante, Spanien, den bedeutendsten Preis der europäischen Museumslandschaft, den „European
Museum of the Year Award 2007“, der damit
erstmals wieder seit 15 Jahren nach Deutschland ging. Damit reiht sich das Museum in die
Liste illustrer Preisträger wie beispielsweise
das Victoria and Albert Museum, London,
und das Guggenheim Bilbao ein.

Bremerhaven > The foremost award on the
European museum scene, the European
Museum of the Year Award 2007, was presented to the German Emigration Center at
the award ceremony in Alicante, Spain on
May 5, 2007. The museum now ranks among
such other illustrious award-winners as the
Victoria and Albert Museum in London and
the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao; what is
more, it is the first time in 15 years that the
award has gone to a museum in Germany.

A MUSEUM´S OSCAR
seit der Eröffnung des Deutschen Auswandererhauses vor
zwei Jahren haben fast 500.000 Menschen aus aller Welt
das Museum besucht. Sie waren gerührt, begeistert und
gefesselt von der authentischen Atmosphäre und der interaktiven Gestaltung des Deutschen Auswandererhauses.
Im Mai hat uns das „European Museum Forum“ mit dem
„European Museum of the Year Award 2007“ ausgezeichnet. Wir sind sehr stolz auf diesen Preis. Er spornt uns an,
noch besser zu werden.
Dear Reader,
Since opening two years ago the German Emigration
Center has welcomed almost 500,000 visitors from all
over the world. They were touched, thrilled and captivated
by the authentic atmosphere and the interactive design
of the German Emigration Center. In May, the European
Museum Forum awarded us the European Museum of the
Year Award 2007. We are very proud of this prize. It spurs
us on to get even better.

Das „European Museum Forum“ zeichnet
unter Federführung des „Council of Europe“
seit seiner Gründung 1977 einmal jährlich
herausragende neue Projekte und Ideen auf
dem Museumsgebiet in Europa aus. Für den
diesjährigen „European Museum of the Year
Award“ hatten sich 50 neue oder umgebaute
Museen beworben, am Ende überzeugte das
Deutsche Auswandererhaus. Die Juroren
lobten die emotionale Vermittlung von Geschichte über Inszenierungen, die dem Theater entlehnt sind, und die wissenschaftliche
Aufbereitung des Themas.
Bei der feierlichen Preisverleihung am 5. Mai
2007 überreichte Königin Fabiola von Belgien
der Direktorin des Deutschen Auswandererhauses Dr. Simone Eick die Auszeichnung:

Am 30. Mai 2007 feierte das Deutsche Auswandererhaus die Auszeichnung mit einem
festlichen Dinner. Moderiert wurde der
Abend von der N24-Moderatorin Astrid
Frohloff. Unter den Gästen befanden sich
auch Ann Nicholls aus Großbritannien und
Atle Faye aus Norwegen, Juroren des „European Museum Forum“, sowie Vertreter aus
Politik und Kultur.

total of 50 museum candidates applied; the
jury chose the German Emigration Center
as award-winner. The judging committee
praised the emotional conveyance of historical facts by means of theatrical presentation
and layout, and the scientific adaptation and
presentation of the topic.
At the official Award Ceremony, Her Majesty
Queen Fabiola of Belgium, patron of the EMF,
presented Dr. Simone Eick, Director of the
German Emigration Center, the trophy award,
a bronze sculpture by Henry Moore, which
will be on display in the entrance foyer of
the German Emigration Center for one year
where visitors may see it.
On May 30, 2007, the museum celebrated this
honor with a festive dinner, moderated by
N24 moderator Astrid Frohloff. Among the
guests were Ann Nicholls from Great Britain
and Atle Faye from Norway, both members
of the European Museum Forum judging
committee, as well as representatives from
culture and politics.

IM ZWISCHENDECK EINES AUSWANDERERSCHIFFES
FILM LOCATION GERMAN EMIGRATION CENTER –
STEERAGE ON AN EMIGRATION SHIP
Für eine Dokumentation des NDR zur Geschichte des Reisens wurde das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus im April 2007 erstmals
zur Filmkulisse. Der Dokumentarfilm
„So’ne Tortur! Wie der Norden damals
reiste“ führt die Zuschauer quer durch
Zeit und norddeutschen Raum. Moderator Kurt Lotz reiste dafür in historischen
Rollen. Er fuhr mit der Postkutsche, brach
als Auswanderer im Zwischendeck eines
Schnelldampfers in die Neue Welt auf und
packte als Italienurlauber der 1950er einen VW Käfer für die strapaziöse Reise
gen Süden.
Für das Reisen auf Auswandererschiffen
drehte das Filmteam in den nach historischem Vorbild rekonstruierten Ausstellungsräumen des Deutschen Auswandererhauses: in der Wartehalle der 3. Klasse,
an der Kaje sowie im Zwischendeck des
Dampfers „Lahn“. Mitarbeiter des Museums wirkten in historischer Kleidung in
der Dokumentation mit. Am 1. Juni war die
Sendung im NDR zu sehen.
The German Emigration Center was used as a film set for

documentary on the history of
travel by the NDR North German
Broadcasting Network. So‘ne Tortur! Wie der Norden damals reiste
(What torture! How the North once
traveled) took viewers on a voyage
through time and the North German
region. Moderator Kurt Lotz donned
the role of travelers from bygone
eras, riding in a stagecoach, boarding a steamship headed for the New
World as an emigrant in steerage, and
packing an old VW Beetle for a long
and strenuous drive to Italy on holiday
during the Fifties.
For the segment on emigrant ships the film
team used the exhibition areas at the German
Emigration Center which are modeled and
reconstructed on the basis of historic design
– the Waiting Hall for steerage passengers, the
wharf and the steerage quarters on board the

steamship Lahn. Museum employees dressed
in historic costume got to play in the documentary. The broadcast aired on June 1st.
WORKSHOP FÜR JOURNALISTEN
A WORKSHOP FOR JOURNALISTS
Es gibt kaum einen Ort in Deutschland, der
für die historische und aktuelle Spurensuche
zum Thema Auswanderung so geeignet ist
wie Bremerhaven, von wo aus über sieben
Millionen Auswanderer in die Neue Welt aufbrachen. 29 Journalisten aus ganz Deutschland folgten der Einladung des Deutschen
Auswandererhauses zu einem dreitägigen
Workshop im Mai 2007, während dem die
wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter des Museums
Recherchequellen und Hintergrundwissen
zur aktuellen Diskussion um Aus- und Einwanderung vermittelten. Erstmals öffnete
das Museum dafür sein Archiv. Ergänzt um
Vorträge von Migrationsexperten wie Prof. Dr.
Jochen Oltmer, Universität Osnabrück, begaben sich die Redakteure im Erlebnismuseum
auf Spurensuche nach Auswanderern aus
ihrer Region – von Hannover über das Bundesland Brandenburg bis nach Nürnberg und
sogar der Region Vorarlberg in Österreich.
Das Seminar wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit
der BIS Bremerhavener Gesellschaft für Investitionsförderung und Stadtentwicklung
, der Journalistin Liane von Droste und der
Nordsee-Zeitung initiiert.

Assisted by academic research staff from the German Emigration Center journalists from all over Germany researched ancestors who emigrated.
the topic of emigration as Bremerhaven.
After all, over seven million emigrants departed from here in search of a new life in
the New World. Twenty-nine journalists
from all over Germany accepted an invitation by the German Emigration Center to
a three-day workshop in May 2007 during
which research staff members provided research sources and background information
on migration for topical discussion. For the
first time, the museum opened its archives
for the journalists‘ use. Prof. Dr. Jochen
Oltmer from the University of Osnabrück
was one of the migration experts to give
talks during the workshop. Well supplied,
the editors set off through the museum tracing the roots of emigrants from their areas, from Hanover in the North to Brandenburg in the East, Nuremberg in the South
and even the Vorarlberg region in Austria.
The seminar was jointly organized by the
BIS Bremerhaven Economic Development
Company, journalist Liane von Droste and
the daily newspaper Nordsee-Zeitung.

LANGE NACHT DER KULTUR
THE LONG NIGHT OF CULTURE
„Eine Diskussion ist ausdr ück lich erwünscht“ sagte Dr. Simone Eick, Direktorin des Deutschen Auswandererhauses,
im Vorfeld der Langen Nacht der Kultur.
Während der Begriff Auswanderung oftmals romantische Vorstellungen hervorruft, reagieren viele Menschen auf das aktuelle Thema Migration eher reserviert.
Unter dem Motto „Grenzerfahr ungen.
Afrikanische Flüchtlinge auf dem Weg
nach Europa“ zeigte das Deutsche Auswandererhaus in der Langen Nacht der
Kultur Filme, in denen die Odyssee afrikanischer Migranten thematisiert wird.
In der Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben
nehmen Millionen afrikanischer Flüchtlinge gewaltige Strapazen und eine oft
riskante Reise auf dem Weg nach Europa
auf sich. Gezeigt wurden die Filme „Afrika, frühmorgens“, „Der blinde Passagier“
und „Festung Europa“.
Im Foyer fand darüber hinaus ein LiveKonzert mit der südafrikanischen Band
DUBE statt, die mit drei halbstündigen
Sets das Publikum begeisterte. Kulinarische Spezialitäten aus Afrika standen zu
diesem besonderen Anlass auf der Karte
des Museumsrestaurants „Speisesaal“.

Long Night of Culture. Historic emigration
tends to conjure up romantic ideas whereas
most people take a very reserved attitude
towards the current topic of migration.
Based on the motto Borderline Experiences.
African Refugees en Route to Europe, the
German Emigration Center used the Long
Night of Culture to show fi lms focusing on
the odyssey of African migrants. There is
almost no extent of burden, strain and often times great risk millions of African refugees take upon themselves in the hopes
of a better life in Europe. The fi lms shown
were Afrika, frühmorgens (Early Morning
in Africa), Der blinde Passagier (The Stowaway) and Festung Europa (The Fortress
of Europe).
The South African band DUBE also gave a
live concert in the museum foyer, wowing
the audience with three half-hour sets. In
honor of this special day, African specialties were served at the museum restaurant
Speisesaal.

Deutschlandradio Kultur am 2. Juni seine
„Deutschlandrundfahrt“. Unter dem Motto „Die unterschätzte Großstadt“ lud der
Sender Wissenschaftler und Künstler aus
Bremerhaven ein, um die Stadt seinen Hörern näher zu bringen. Die Direktorin des
Deutschen Auswandererhauses, Dr. Simone Eick, begrüßte die knapp 100 Besucher
und stellte im Interview mit Moderator Olaf
Kosert das Museum vor. Gäste waren u.a.
Lilo Tadday, die das Forschungsschiff “Polarstern“ als Fotografi n in die Arktis begleitete und die Pressesprecherin des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts Margarete Pauls,
die über die Forschungen des Instituts für
Polar- und Meeresforschung berichtete.
Gleichzeitig wurden Forscher aus Spitzbergen und der Antarktis live zugeschaltet.

director Dr. Simone Eick welcomed about
100 guests and in an interview with moderator Olaf Kosert, introduced them to the
German Emigration Center. Other program guests were photographer Lilo Tadday, who accompanied the research ship
Polarstern on a voyage to the Arctic and
Margarete Pauls, spokeswoman for the
Alfred Wegener Institute, who reported on
the institute‘s polar and marine research
work. The radio program was also connected live to academic researchers in Spitzbergen and the Antarctic.

HISTORISCHES DINNER MIT STERNEKOCH
HISTORICAL DINNER WITH STAR CHEF
DEUTSCHES AUSWANDERERHAUS PRÄSENTIERTE SICH ALS ORT IM „LAND DER IDEEN“
Zur Fußballweltmeisterschaft wurde die Initiative der Bundesregierung und der Deutschen Wirtschaft „Deutschland – Land der
Ideen“ ins Leben gerufen und aufgrund des
großen Anklangs in diesem Jahr weitergeführt. Über 1.500 Einrichtungen hatten sich
beworben, als einer von 365 kreativen und
innovativen Orten im „Land der Ideen“ in
Erscheinung zu treten. Darunter auch das
Deutsche Auswandererhaus, das als einziger Ort in Bremerhaven 2007 ausgezeichnet wurde.
Aus diesem Anlass präsentierte sich das Museum am 21. April 2007 mit einer besonderen Abendveranstaltung. Im Anschluss an
die Preisverleihung im hauseigenen Kino
„Ocean Cinema“ genossen die Gäste im Museumsrestaurant „Speisesaal“ ein historisches
Dinner: Arnd Feye, Sternekoch im GourmetRestaurant „L’Orchidée“ in Bremen, servierte
mit dem Küchenteam

Deutschen Bank, die Hauptsponsor der Initiative „Deutschland – Land der Ideen“ ist.
Zum Ausklang des Abends öffnete das Deutsche Auswandererhaus seine Türen zu den
nach historischem Vorbild rekonstruierten
Schiffskabinen, in denen die Besucher das
Erzählte noch einmal nacherleben konnten.

For last year‘s Soccer World Cup
the German federal government
and the German business community joined forces to create
the concept ”Germany – Land of
Ideas,“ which appealed so much
that it was continued this year.
Over 1,500 institutions of various
kinds applied for acceptance as
one of 365 creative and innovative places in the ”Land of Ideas,“

Zwischen den Gängen legte Feye offen, was
sich hinter heute eher unbekannten Zubereitungsarten wie „Marengo“ und „Mornay“
verbarg und wie an Bord gekocht wurde.

Given the occasion the museum put on a
special evening event on April 21, 2007.
Following the award presentation in the
museum‘s Ocean Cinema, invited guests
enjoyed a historic three-course dinner at
the museum restaurant Speisesaal prepared
by Arnd Feye, Michelin-star chef of the
gourmet restaurant L‘Orchidée in Bremen
and his team based on the dinner menu
served on board the MS Berlin on April 21,
1959. Between courses, Feye revealed what
the cuisine terms ”Marengo“ and ”Mornay“
mean and how food was prepared on board
ocean liners. Contemporary witnesses from
Bremen and Lower Saxony spoke of their
own experiences on board the MS Berlin.
Among the guests were Thomas Röwekamp,
former Lord Mayor of Bremen and now
Senator of the Interior, Artur Beneken,
head of the town council of Bremerhaven
and Wolfgang Voss, spokesman of the
Deutsche Bank, the main sponsor of the
initiative ”Germany – Land of Ideas.“ Towards the end of the evening the German
Emigration Center opened its doors to the
historic reproductions of ship cabins so that
guests could actually see what life on board
an ocean liner at the time was like.

Open-Air-Konzert von The BossHoss, Culcha Candela und Texico zum zweijährigen Bestehen des Deutschen Auswandererhauses
Vor zwei Jahren eröffnete das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus. Wie im vergangenen
Jahr feiert das Museum seinen Jahrestag
mit einem großen Benefi zkonzert. Am 9.
August 2007 treten die Bands The BossHoss,
Culcha Candela sowie Texico direkt am
Neuen Hafen vor dem Deutschen Auswandererhaus auf. Texico bildet den Auftakt
mit lateinamerikanischen Rhythmen zwischen Latino-Rockabilly, Azteken-Swing
und Mambo-Twang. Mit Culcha Candela
folgen deutsch-, englisch- und spanischsprachige Lyrics mit musikalischen Einflüssen aus Latin, Reggae, Salsa und HipHop.
The BossHoss interpretiert bekannte Lieder verschiedener Genres in ungewohnter
Country-Manier. Die musikalische Vielfalt
der Darbietungen spiegelt das Thema des
Museums wider. Mit dem Open-Air-Konzert möchte das Deutsche Auswandererhaus, wie in den Jahren zuvor, das Thema
Migration einem großen Publikum näher
bringen. Das Konzert wird in Kooperation
mit Radio „Bremen Vier” veranstaltet. Der
Reinerlös wird wie im Vorjahr der UrsulaWulfes-Stiftung zugute kommen.

Two years ago the German Emigration Center,
recently awarded the European Museum of
the Year 2007 Award, opened its doors. As in
the previous year, the second anniversary is
a special occasion the museum will celebrate
with a big, outdoor benefit concert on August
9, 2007 featuring the bands The BossHoss,
Culcha Candela and Texico, to be held at
the museum‘s New Harbor location. Texico
will start off with Latin American rhythms,
a mixture of Latin Rockabilly, Aztec Swing
and Mambo Twang, followed by Culcha Candela with German, English and Spanish lyrics
whose music is rooted in Latin, Reggae, Salsa
and HipHop. The BossHoss interprets popular
songs of different genres in unusual country
music style. The musical variety of the performances mirrors the museum‘s central theme.
As in the past two years, the German Emigration Center sees one purpose of the open-air
concert as creating a greater understanding
of the topic migration for a broader audience.
The open-air concert will be organized in cooperation with Radio ”Bremen Vier,“ and, just
like last year, the net proceeds will be donated
to the Ursula-Wulfes-Foundation.

Es ist 4 Uhr morgens. In einer „Milonga-Bar“
im Viertel Congreso, Buenos Aires, tanzt
ein Paar voller Hingabe Tango. Die Tänzerin heißt Bettina Ehrenhaus. Ihre Lebensgeschichte erzählt von Flucht, Vertreibung
und Verfolgung. In Südamerika suchte ihre
Familie Schutz vor dem Nazi-Regime, sie
selbst kam während der argentinischen
Militärdiktatur ins Gefängnis. Ihr Mann ist
seit dieser Zeit verschwunden – vermutlich
ermordet.
Bettina Ehrenhaus ist einer von fünf Menschen, die Ciro Cappellari in seinem neuen Dokumentarfi lm „Buenos Aires“ für das
Deutsche Auswandererhaus porträtiert. Mit
der Kamera folgt er den Protagonisten durch
ihren Alltag. Deren Lebensläufe könnten
nicht unterschiedlicher sein, eines jedoch
verbindet sie: Ihre Vorfahren stammen aus
Deutschland.

Rahmen einer Sonderausstellung im Deutschen Auswandererhaus gezeigt.
It‘s four in the morning at the Bar Milonga
in the Congreso neighborhood of Buenos Aires. A couple dancing tango is oblivious to
what is going on around them. The woman is
Bettina Ehrenhaus and the story of her life
is one of flight, expulsion and persecution.
In Argentina her family sought protection
from the Nazi regime, Bettina herself was
imprisoned during the military dictatorship
in Argentina. Her husband numbers among
the thousands of ”desaparecidos“ – people
who disappeared, never to return, presumably murdered.
Bettina Ehrenhaus is one of the five people
Ciro Cappellari portrays in his recent documentary fi lm for the German Emigration
Center, Buenos Aires. He follows his protagonists with the camera as they go about
their everyday lives. Lives that could not
be more different with the exception of one
thing that unites them all – their family roots
are in Germany.
This 10-minute documentary continues the
cooperation between the German Emigration Center and Grimme award-winner Ciro
Cappellari, whose film Welcome Home is featured at the permanent exhibition. Buenos
Aires will probably be shown for the fi rst
time at a special exhibition at the German
Emigration Center scheduled for 2008/09.

Der Blick auf das allen Auswanderern innewohnende Prinzip Hoffnung war Ideengeber für diese Ausstellung.
Die Sonderausstellung „Hoffnungen im
19. und 20. Jahrhundert” erzählte 29 Lebenswege von 1848er Revolutionären,
Arbeiterführern, FrauenrechtlerInnen,
ZionistInnen und Shoa-Überlebenden. In
Schaukästen wurden Dioramen gezeigt, die
die wichtigsten Momente in ihrem Leben
festhielten.
Die Installation „Mythos und Glaube” illustrierte die Geschichte der Hoffnung vom
griechischen Mythos der Pandora, über die
Hoffnung in den drei abrahamitischen Religionen Judentum, Christentum und Islam
bis zur Präsenz des Themas Hoffnung in den
gegenwärtigen Printmedien.
Begleitend erschien die „Ausstellungszeitung
Hoffnung”, in der Materialien und Fundstücke aus den Rubriken Politik, Wirtschaft,
Kunst, Literatur, Philosophie und Sport zu
finden sind und die im Shop des Deutschen
Auswandererhauses erhältlich ist.
The principle of hope, the spirit that carried
emigrants on their path towards a new life,
gave the German Emigration Center the idea
for this special exhibition.
Hope in the 19th and 20th centuries relates
the life stories of 29 emigrants ranging from
the revolutionaries of 1848 to labor leaders,
women‘s suffragettes, Zionists and survivors of the Shoa. Dioramas set up in display
cabinets focused on pivotal moments in the
person‘s lifetime. The installation ”Myth and
Truth“ illustrated the concept of hope based
on the Greek myth of Pandora‘s Box, hope
in the three Abrahamian religions Judaism,
Christianity and Islam, and the presence of
hope in modern-day print media.
Complementing the exhibition is the Exhibition Newspaper Hope featuring material
and articles from the world of politics, the
economy, art and culture, philosophy, literature and sports, available at the German
Emigration Center‘s museum shop.

NEUES IN DER DAUERAUSSTELLUNG
Im Raum „Ellis Island“ ermöglichen nun
sieben Blätterbücher den Blick in andere
Einwanderungshäfen wie Melbourne, Quebec, San Francisco oder Rio de Janeiro. Darüber hinaus wurde der Einwanderungstest
erweitert: Der Besucher beantwortet statt
bisher 5 nun 19 der 28 Fragen, die den Ankömmlingen in New York zwischen 1892
und 1954 gestellt wurden. Die restlichen 9
Fragen können aus Datenschutzgründen
nicht abgefragt werden. Wird der Antrag
auf Einwanderung von den Inspektoren
befürwortet, haben die Besucher im Museums-Shop die Möglichkeit, eine Immigration-Card (Einwanderer-Ausweis), auf ihren
Namen ausgestellt, zu erwerben. Die Immigration-Cards erhielten die historischen
Einwanderer auf Ellis Island.

EXHIBITION
In the Ellis Island room seven albums will
now provide background information on
other ports of emigration, e.g. Melbourne,
Quebec, San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro.
Further, the immigration test was extend-
9
ed so that visitors may now answer 19 of
the 28 questions immigrants arriving in
New York between 1892 and 1954 had to
answer, instead of just fi ve. The nine remaining questions may not be included for
data protection reasons. If the inspection
officer approves the immigrant‘s application to enter the country, visitors may purchase an immigration card – copies of the
immigration cards issued to immigrants at
Ellis Island at the time – registered in their
name at the museum shop.
Forum Migration also awaits another addition. There are two media stations which
present and identify possibilities for visitors to research ancestors who emigrated.
By answering a few questions the search
options are narrowed down and the user is
referred to the right database for his or her
search. This new addition will be a great
advantage in searching for ancestors who
emigrated. Staff members will, of course,
continue to be of assistance in researching
family members.

Diese Neuerung soll die Ahnensuche für
Hobby-Familienforscher im Deutschen
Auswandererhaus erleichtern. Natürlich
stehen den Suchenden auch weiterhin
MitarbeiterInnen des Deutschen Auswandererhauses bei der Recherche hilfreich zur
Seite.

„STANGEN’S PARTY – DIE ERSTE DEUTSCHE
PAUSCHALREISE IN DIE USA 1893“

1893 brach eine Reisegesellschaft wohlhabender Bürger aus ganz Deutschland von
Bremerhaven zu einer 84tägigen USA-Reise
auf. Veranstalter dieser ersten von Deutschland ausgehenden Pauschalreise in die Vereinigten Staaten war das Berliner Reisebüro
Carl Stangen, das mit der Reederei Norddeutscher Lloyd kooperierte. Unter den Reisenden befand sich der Student William Davignon aus dem belgischen Lüttich, der ein
Album mit Fotografien seiner Reisegruppe
(engl. „party“) und den Sehenswürdigkeiten
der USA anlegte.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Leibniz-Institut
für Länderkunde, Leipzig, zeigt das Deutsche Auswandererhaus 74 seltene Fotos von
Reisezielen, die auch heute noch USA-Urlauber faszinieren: die großen Metropolen,
die Rocky Mountains, den Yellowstone Nationalpark und Yosemite Valley. Höhepunkt
der Reise war der Besuch der Weltausstellung in Chicago.

”STANGEN’S PARTY – THE FIRST GERMAN
PACKAGE TOUR TO THE U.S.A. 1893“

In 1893, a large group of well-to-do Germans
departed from Bremerhaven on an 84-day
tour of the United States. The organizer of
what was the first tour group from Germany to the United States was Carl Stangen‘s
Travel Agency in Berlin, which cooperated
with the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping line.
One of the persons in the group was William
Davignon, a student from Lièges, Belgium,
who put together an album of pictures of the
travel party and sights in the U.S.A.
In joint cooperation with the Leibniz Institute
for Regional Geography, Leipzig, the German Emigration Center is exhibiting 74 rare
photographs of travel destinations, which
continue to fascinate travelers to the U.S.

Austauschprogramme und Studentenwohnheime auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks. In
Bremerhaven wird nun der „Max Kade-Saal“
im Erdgeschoss des früheren Seeamtes an
den Mäzen erinnern, der 1904 von Schwäbisch Hall nach Amerika auswanderte und
in New York zu einem erfolgreichen Unter-

wurde im Januar 2006 gegründet. Ziel ist es,
das Deutsche Auswandererhaus in die Lage
zu versetzen, die Geschichte der Auswanderung hinsichtlich ihrer nationalen und internationalen Bedeutung zu erforschen und einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zu vermitteln. Mit
der Spende der Max Kade Foundation, New
York, für die Restaurierung der historischen
Räume des Seeamts ist ein erster wichtiger
Schritt getan. Für die Verwirklichung ihrer
gemeinnützigen Ziele ist die Stiftung jedoch

As of June, academic researchers at the German
Emigration Center can now work in the former
Marine Board of Inquiry building. The landmarked building will also be home to international guest researchers coming to the museum
on exchange programs. The restoration of the
facilities was made possible through the generous support of the Max Kade Foundation, New
York. The foundation, founded in 1944 by the
German-American Max Kade, funds universities, libraries, exchange programs and student
dormitories on both sides of the Atlantic. The
hall on the ground level of the former Marine
Board of Inquiry building in Bremerhaven,
named Max Kade-Saal, will commemorate the
patron, a native of Schwäbisch Hall who emigrated to the United States in 1904, and became
a successful entrepreneur. The donation was
procured by the German Emigration Center
Foundation. The former courtroom, which the
Marine Board of Inquiry used for its sessions
until 2002, will also serve as an additional room
for special exhibitions, workshops, seminars
and museum readings.
The German Emigration Center Foundation
was founded in January 2006. The purpose
of this foundation is to enable the German
Emigration Center to research the national
and international significance of the history
of emigration and make its findings accessible to a broad public. The donation provided
by the Max Kade Foundation, New York, for
the restoration of the historic Marine Board
of Inquiry Building marked an important
step in this direction. However, in order to
continue its non-profit work the foundation
is in need of further donations.

NEU IM KURATORIUM NEW ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Zusammengesetzt aus Persönlichkeiten aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Kultur trifft sich das Kuratorium ein- bis zweimal jährlich, um über
Inhalt und Ausrichtung zukünftiger Ausstellungen und Projekte im Deutschen Auswandererhaus zu beraten sowie über aktuelle Entwicklungen in den Bereichen Museum und Migration zu diskutieren. Im Rahmen der Kuratoriumssitzung im März 2007 konnten mit
dem Historiker Dr. Helmut Gold und dem Migrationsforscher Prof. Dr. Klaus J. Bade zwei weitere hervorragende Wissenschaftler für das
international besetzte Kuratorium vorgestellt werden. Dr. Gold hat den Vorsitz des Kuratoriums übernommen.
The Board of Trustees of the German Emigration Center, whose members are from the business, political and cultural communities,
meets once or twice a year in order to discuss the contents and focus of future exhibitions and projects at the museum, and to discuss
current developments in the museum landscape and migration. During the course of a board meeting in March 2007 two highly acclaimed
academic researchers were won as new members to join the international line-up on the Board of Trustees. Dr. Gold will be taking over
chairmanship of the board.

Das Jüdische Museum und das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus gehen einen gemeinsamen Weg. Das Jüdische Museum, mit mehr
als 600.000 Besuchern pro Jahr, lädt zu einer
Entdeckungsreise durch zwei Jahrtausende
deutsch-jüdischer Geschichte ein. Im Deutschen Auswandererhaus können sich die
Besucher u.a. zum Thema der deutsch- und
osteuropäisch-jüdischen Auswanderung informieren und sich auf die Spuren der eigenen Vorfahren begeben.
Derzeit stricken beide Häuser ein Kombiangebot, das vor allem auf amerikanische Gäste
zugeschnitten ist. Neben Museumsbesuchen
in Berlin und Bremerhaven werden in beiden Städten auch Übernachtungen angeboten. Das Paket wird für 2008 buchbar sein.

The Jewish Museum and the German Emigration Center are embarking on a joint
path. The Jewish Museum invites its over
600,000 visitors per year on a discovery tour
through two millennia of German-Jewish
history. Visitors to the German Emigration
Center may learn about the emigration of
German and Eastern European Jews and
trace the roots of their own ancestors.
Both museums are presently working out a
combination offer tailored to visitors from
the U.S.A. In addition to museum visits in
Berlin and Bremerhaven, the offer will include an overnight accommodation package
and be bookable as of 2008.
The partner hotels are the Atlantic Hotel
Sail City in Bermerhaven and the Park Inn
Hotel at Alexanderplatz in Berlin. The BIS
Bremerhaven Tourist Board and Berlin
Tourism Marketing tourism organizations
will, together with other organizations, be
in charge of marketing this new offer in the
U.S. market. The next step is to widen the
circle of partners; the Anne Frank Museum

dem Erzählen von Zeitgeschichte. Die Redaktion von „einestages“ – so der vorläufige
Projektname – setzt die Themen, steuert
die Homepage und steht für sorgfältig recherchierte, spannend aufbereitete Texte,
verfasst von Nutzern, Redakteuren und
Wissenschaftlern. Dafür kooperiert „einestages“ mit renommierten Institutionen
wie beispielsweise dem Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, dem Filmarchiv der

The SPIEGEL ONLINE portal einestages,
which will be launched in September, is
the journalists‘ answer to the participatory web with both users and editors acting as partners in a common project – the
account of contemporary history. The editors of einestages (working name) chooses
the topics, monitors the homepage, and ensures that the texts written by users, editors
and scientists are carefully researched and
edited. Einestages is cooperating with renowned institutions such as the Bildarchiv
Preussischer Kulturbesitz, the Filmarchiv
der Deutschen Wochenschau, the Geschichtswettbewerb des Bundespräsidenten (Körber foundation) and the German Emigration Center. Following prior checking by
the editors users may place text, pictures,
audio documents and videos on contemporary history topics in the portal and discuss
all published documents with other users,
for example ancestors who emigrated. The
published material is accessible on a permanent basis and always up to date, as it
is continually supplemented and linked to
other topics.

„Es ist ein komisches Gefühl, sich selber als
Teil einer Ausstellung zu sehen, aber es ist
wirklich toll gemacht.“ Sichtlich zufrieden
zeigt sich Sabine Joyce, geborene Schastok, bei ihrem ersten Besuch des Deutschen
Auswandererhauses in Bremerhaven am 17.
Januar 2007. Hier bildet ihre Biographie einen Teil der Dauerausstellung, anhand derer
die Besucher das Abenteuer Auswanderung
hautnah erleben. Sie ist beeindruckt von der
Präsentation ihres Lebens.
Sabine Schastok wird am 25. März 1939 in
Bad Ziegenhals in Oberschlesien im heutigen

Polen geboren. Bei Kriegsende 1945 muss die
Familie die Stadt verlassen und zieht nach
Bad Zwischenahn, Niedersachsen. Bereits
als Kind hegt Sabine den großen Wunsch, in
den USA zu leben. Doch zuvor verlässt sie
Deutschland Richtung London, wo sie als
Dienstmädchen arbeitet. Aufgrund eines
Arbeitsangebotes aus den USA erhält sie die
Einwanderungserlaubnis. Der Abschied von
Familie und Freunden erfolgt am 2. September 1960 an der Kaje in Bremerhaven.
Am 12. September 1960 gegen 8.30 Uhr läuft
die „MS Berlin“ in den Hafen von New York

Sabine Schastok. Ihr Ziel ist Jacksonville
in Florida. Wegen eines Eisenbahnerstreiks
verzögert sich jedoch ihre Weiterreise dorthin um zwei Tage. In dieser Zeit genießt
sie die Weltstadt New York. In Jacksonville
wird sie von ihrer neuen Arbeitgeberin,
Mrs. Jackson, vom Bahnhof abgeholt. Sabine Schastok arbeitet als Gesellschafterin
der Unternehmergattin und als Kindermädchen. Obwohl sie sich in der Familie
und auch in Florida sehr wohl fühlt, zieht
es sie bald weiter, um noch mehr von den
USA kennen zu lernen. Washington D.C. ist
ihr nächstes Ziel. Hier besucht sie eine Sekretär-Schule und arbeitet beim National
Press Club. Während dieser Zeit lernt sie
auch ihren Mann Kevin Joyce kennen. Die

selbst an. Da die „Farmerin“ gerne reist,
nutzt sie insbesondere den weniger arbeitsintensiven Wintermonat Januar, um weiterhin diesem Hobby zu frönen. Eine dieser
Reisen hat sie ins Deutsche Auswandererhaus geführt.

Noch heute betreibt sie dort, nach aufwändiger Renovierung und Umgestaltung des
alten Landhauses und der Gartenanlagen,
Landwirtschaft. Das Ehepaar Joyce hält
zahlreiche Tierarten und betreut auch im-

née Schastok, on her fi rst visit to the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven on
January 17, 2007. Her biography is one of
fi fteen which make up the permanent exhibition and which are elementary in helping visitors to understand emigration and
the circumstances surrounding it. Sabine
Joyce is impressed by the presentation of
her life.
Sabine Schastok was born in Bad Ziegenhals in Upper Silesia (now Poland) on
March 25, 1939. In 1945, at the end of the
Second World War, the family was forced
to leave the city and move to Bad Zwischenahn in Lower Saxony. Even as a child,
Sabine had always wanted to go live in the
U.S.A. But fi rst she left Germany for London where she worked as a parlor maid.
Thanks to a job offer in the United States,
Sabine was able to obtain an immigration
permit. Hence, she bid farewell to family
and friends on the quay in Bremerhaven
on September 2, 1960.

At around 8:30 A.M. on September 12, 1960,
the MS Berlin sailed into the Port of New
York with young immigrant Sabine Schastok on board. Her fi nal destination was
Jacksonville, Florida, however, due to a railroad strike her trip was delayed by two days.
The young woman used the time to see New
York. Upon arriving in Jacksonville, Sabine
Schastok was picked up at the train station
by her new employer, a woman named Mrs.
Jackson for whom Sabine Schastok worked
as a companion and nanny. Whereas she
was very happy both in the family she
works for and in Florida, she wanted to see
more of the United States. Washington, D.C.
was her next destination where she went to
secretarial school and later worked for the
National Press Club. It is during this time
that she met her husband, Kevin Joyce. The
couple married in 1963, moving to Crofton,
Maryland after the birth of their daughters Petra and Kara. On a drive through
the southern part of Maryland, Sabine noticed a run-down farm – Bridge Hill – which
caught her attention. She realized this is
what she always dreamed of having. And
so it happens that the Joyce family bought
Bridge Hill in the town of Davidsonville,
Maryland.
Following extensive remodeling and renovation of the old country house and its surrounding garden, Sabine began farming,
which she has kept up through today. The
Joyce couple keep several kinds of animals
and nurse wild animals in need of care,
particularly birds. The Joyces grow their
own birdfeed. Since traveling continues to
be one of Sabine Schastok‘s favorite pastimes the countrywoman usually uses the
slow winter month January to go on trips,
one of which brought her to the German
Emigration Center.

Hans Matthiesen verlässt am 14. November
1929 auf der „SS München“ Bremerhaven in
Richtung New York. Nach dem Schulbesuch
beginnt er im elterlichen Betrieb eine Müllerlehre. Seine Träume von Amerika treiben ihn
in die Neue Welt. Jedoch rechnet niemand mit
der Weltwirtschaftskrise. Der unmittelbar vor
seiner Ankunft ausbrechende Börsencrash
lässt seine Hoffnung auf bessere berufliche

Aussichten nicht in Erfüllung gehen. Anders als geplant, kehrt er daher 1931 in seine
Heimatstadt Arnis an der Schlei in Schleswig-Holstein zurück. Dort arbeitet er erneut
in der Mühle seiner Eltern und legt 1935 die
Meisterprüfung zum Müller ab. Im Anschluss
daran übernimmt er eine eigene Mühle in der
Wesermarsch und gründet eine Familie.

Wenige Tage vor seinem 100. Geburtstag am
23. Juli 2007 besuchte er die Ausstellung erneut, diesmal um in der Galerie der 7 Millionen eine Schublade zu öffnen, die seinen
Namen trägt und die Immigration Card zeigt,
die ihm die Einreise 1929 ermöglichte.
On November 14, 1929, Hans Matthiesen left
Bremerhaven in the direction of New York on
board the ”SS München“. Having finished his
academic education, he began an apprenticeship at his parents’ mill. His dreams of America lead him to the New World. However no
one was prepared for the World Economic
Crisis. The stock market crash, which occurred shortly before his arrival, let his hope
of better job prospects come to nothing. Other
than his original intentions, he returned to his
home town Arnis on the Schlei in SchleswigHolstein in 1931. There he once again worked
at his parents’ mill and passed his master‘s
examination as a miller in 1935. He then took
over a mill in the Wesermarsch region and
started a family.
Last fall Hans Matthiesen visited the German Emigration Center. A few days before his
100th birthday on July 23, 2007, he re-visited
the exhibtion, but this time to open a drawer
in the Gallery of the 7 Million which bears
his name and displays the immigration card,
which made his entry possible in 1929.

GELUNGENE KOMBINATION
A VERY SUCCESSFUL COMBINATION
In einem neuen Konzept kombiniert das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus wissenschaftliches Volontariat mit Promotion. Die beiden Doktoranten und
wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter Robert Fuchs und
Steffen Wiegmann sprachen darüber mit Vera Beyer,
Sprecherin Arbeitskreis Volontariat des Deutschen
Museumsbundes und Mitarbeiterin des Rheinischen
Industriemuseums.
Beyer: Wie kam es zu dieser offiziellen Kombination von Volontariat und Promotion?
Fuchs: Die Ausbildung eines Geisteswissenschaftlers mit Promotion und anschließendem
Volontariat dauert sehr lange und so liegt es
nahe, beides zu kombinieren.
Beyer: Wie sieht die Kombination in der Realität
aus?
Wiegmann: Praktisch sieht es so aus, dass für
uns in der Woche zwei Tage für die Doktorarbeit zur Verfügung stehen und drei Tage für
das Museum gearbeitet wird. Wichtig dabei
ist Flexibilität und eine gute Absprache untereinander, so dass Arbeitsabläufe für das
Museum gut funktionieren.
Beyer: Ist die Vermischung von Volontariat und
Promotion sinnvoll und anderen Museen und
deren Volontären zu empfehlen, oder kommen
dann beide Arbeitsbereiche zu kurz?
Fuchs: Die Kombination ist in jedem Fall sowohl für den Volontär als auch das Museum
sinnvoll. Allerdings bedarf es schon einer
strengen Organisation und Disziplin, um beide Bereiche zu trennen.
Beyer: Bekommt Ihr vom Haus auch eine inhaltliche Betreuung oder wird Euch lediglich die
Zeit zur Verfügung gestellt, in der Ihr an Eurer
Promotion arbeiten dürft?
Fuchs: Da die Direktorin Dr. Simone Eick selber zur Amerikaauswanderung promoviert
hat, ist sie inhaltlich eine große Unterstützung. Dazu kommt die auf Migration ausgerichtete Bibliothek des Hauses und die Kooperation mit diversen Einrichtungen, die
sich positiv auswirken.
Beyer: Welche Vorteile hat diese Kombination
für das Deutsche Auswandererhaus?
Wiegmann: Für nahezu jedes Museum stellt
sich die Frage, inwieweit es im Bereich der
Forschung selbst tätig sein kann und somit
für sein Spezialgebiet, auf das es ausgerichtet
ist, Beiträge und neue Erkenntnisse bringen
kann. Mit der vom Deutschen Auswandererhaus gewählten, in Deutschland völlig neuen Konstruktion wird der wissenschaftliche
Austausch und damit die Etablierung einer
neuen Museumskonzeption gefördert und
auch das Potenzial derselben.
Beyer: Ist es nicht problematisch, dass die
Promotion nicht innerhalb der zwei Jahre
des Volontariats abgeschlossen sein wird?

Fuchs: Das war von vornherein klar und kann
entsprechend einkalkuliert werden.
The German Emigration Center has implemented a new
concept combining postgraduate research fellowship
and doctorate. Robert Fuchs and Steffen Wiegmann,
both postgraduates and academic research staff members, described the program to Vera Beyer, Spokeswoman for the Postgraduate Fellowship Working Group of
the German Museum Association and staff member of
the Rhenish Industrial Museum.
Beyer: How did this official combination of
postgraduate fellowship and doctorate come
about?
Fuchs: It takes humanists and social scientists a long time to get their Ph.D. So it seemed
ideal to combine the postgraduate research
period with the time needed to write their
dissertation.
Beyer: How does this translate into everyday
life?
Wiegmann: Practically speaking, we have
two days a week to work on our dissertation.
The other three days we work at the museum.
Flexibility and communication are important
and improve work processes at the museum.
Beyer: Is it a good idea to combine a postgraduate fellowship and work on a doctorate? Is it
something you would recommend to other museums or do both work areas suffer as a result?
Fuchs: The combination is definitely advantageous for the postgraduate as well as for the
museum, however, it does require plenty of
organization and discipline to keep both areas
separated.
Beyer: Does the museum provide assistance
when it comes to content or does it simply give
you time to work on your dissertation?
Fuchs: Since museum director Dr. Simone
Eick received her Ph.D. in emigration to
America, she is able to provide ample assistance. In addition, the library specializes in
migration, and cooperation with other institutions has a very positive effect.
Beyer: How does this concept benefit the German Emigration Center?
Wiegmann: Every museum has to decide for
itself whether it can carry out academic research, i.e. producing contributions and supplying findings on its specific area of focus.
The German Emigration Center‘s concept,
unique in Germany, promotes academic research exchange, thereby establishing a new
museum concept and the potential that entails.
Beyer: Is it difficult knowing that your dissertation has to be completed within the two-year
postgraduate fellowship period?
Fuchs: It was clear beforehand, so we must
calculate accordingly.

Wenige Tage nach der Kürung zum Europäischen Museum des Jahres begrüßte das Deutsche Auswandererhaus seinen 400.000. Gast.
Marion und Heinz Hammerschlag aus Troisdorf in Nordrhein-Westfalen kamen am 22. Mai
2007 erstmals nach Bremerhaven, um das Museum zu besuchen. Neben einem Blumenstrauß
erhielt das überraschte Ehepaar eine Jahreskarte und eine Einladung ins Museumsrestaurant „Speisesaal“. Zu ihren Eindrücken nach
dem Rundgang befragt, entgegnete Heinz Hammerschlag: „erschlagend beeindruckend“.

A few days prior to its nomination as European
Museum of the Year 2007, the German Emigration Center welcomed its 400,000th visitor.
Marion and Heinz Hammerschlag from Troisdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia made their first
trip to Bremerhaven on May 22, 2007 in order
to visit the museum. In addition to receiving a
bouquet of flowers, the surprised couple also received with an annual ticket to the museum as
well as an invitation to the museum restaurant
Speisesaal. After completing their tour of the
museum Heinz Hammerschlag said they found
the exhibition both amazing and impressing.
Pilots who are perfectly trained.

Flight attendants who leave you in a land of dreams.
All for this one moment.
