Romanischen Kirchen vermitteln unvergessliche Eindrücke. Darüber hinaus verfügt die Domstadt über eine hohe Dichte an Museen und Galerien, die sich in vielfältigen Ausstellungen der
eigenen Geschichte, aber auch der Moderne und Gegenwart widmen. Ganz besonders steht
die Rheinmetropole aber für Lebensfreude, Offenheit und Toleranz – kurzum die „kölsche
Lebensart“. Hier wird Gastfreundschaft großgeschrieben – erleben Sie es selbst!
Der Veranstaltungskalender im Jahr 2015 ist gespickt mit einer Vielzahl spannender Events.
Im Februar ist Köln geprägt vom weltberühmten Karneval; das ausgelassene Feiern erreicht
seinen Höhepunkt am 16. Februar, wenn bis zu 1,5 Millionen Karneval-Fans zum traditionellen Rosenmontagszug in die Innenstadt kommen. Vom 11.-21. März begeistern zahlreiche
renommierte deutsche und internationale Autoren das Publikum im Rahmen des Literatur
festivals lit.COLOGNE. Auch die Parade zum Christopher Street Day am 05. Juli wird wieder
viele Besucher begeistern. Nicht verpassen sollte man das spektakuläre Feuerwerkerlebnis
„Kölner Lichter“ am 11. Juli, welches jährlich rund 800.000 Besucher in seinen Bann zieht. Synchron zur Musik wird von Schiffen aus, die auf dem Rhein vor der Altstadt ankern, ein Feuerwerk entzündet. Schiffskarten sind bei KölnTourismus erhältlich. Computerspiele-Fans kommen vom 05.-09. August auf ihre Kosten, wenn zum siebten Mal die gamescom in Köln ihre
Tore öffnet – weltweit (nach eigenen Angaben) größte Messe für Computer- und Videospiele.
Im Herbst laden die Institutionen des Kölner Kulturlebens zu ihren „Langen Nächten“ ein. Im
September präsentiert sich die vielfältige Kölner Musikszene bei der „Musiknacht“. Während
der „Theaternacht“ im Oktober führen die zahlreichen städtischen und freien Bühnen Repertoire-Kostproben auf. Seit Jahren beliebt und bewährt ist die „Museumsnacht Köln“.
Im November und Dezember erstrahlt Köln in weihnachtlichem Glanz. Erleben Sie dann die
traumhaft romantische Kulisse der zahlreichen Kölner Weihnachtsmärkte. Festliche Weihnachtskonzerte, stimmungsvolle Adventsschifffahrten auf dem Rhein und Krippengänge runden das vorweihnachtliche Angebot ab. Weitere Informationen zu den Kölner Highlights im

The events calendar for 2015 is peppered with a variety of exciting events. In February and March
Cologne is characterised by its world renowned carnival, the exuberant celebrations reach a high
point on 16. February when up to 1.5 million carnival-fans come to the traditional Shrove Monday parade in the city centre. Numerous renowned authors from Germany and abroad will be
wowing the public from 11.-21. March in the literary festival – “lit.COLOGNE”. The Christopher
Street Day Parade on 06. July also inspires many visitors. And you shouldn’t miss the firework
event „Cologne lights“ on 11. July, which attracts around 800,000 visitors every year. A firework
is launched in time with music, from ships anchored on the Rhine in front of the old town. Tickets
for the boats are available at Cologne Tourist Board. Computer game fans come between the
05.-09. August, as the gamescom will then open its doors for the seventh year – the largest trade
fair (by their own admission) of computer and video games worldwide.
In autumn the institutions of Cologne’s cultural life treat us to “Long Nights”. In September the
diverse Cologne music scene will be introducing itself in the „Night of Music“. Whilst on „Theatre
Night“ in October numerous urban and free stage repertoire-samples are performed. For years,
the “Night of Cologne Museums” has been popular and successful.
In November and December, Cologne glows in pre-Christmas splendour. Experience than the
fabulously romantic sets of the numerous Christmas markets in Cologne. Festive Christmas concerts, atmospheric Advent boat rides on the Rhine and manger visits round out the pre-Christmas

aus aller Welt. 1996 erklärte die UNESCO den Kölner Dom zum Weltkulturerbe.
Mit dem Kranz der zwölf großen Romanischen Kirchen verfügt Köln über weitere Schwergewichte der Kirchenarchitektur. Nach den Zerstörungen durch den Krieg und dem Wiederaufbau der Kirchenhäuser erstrahlt „Colonia Romanica“ seit 1985 wieder in ganzer Schönheit.

In Köln gab es im Mittelalter eines der bedeutendsten jüdischen Stadtquartiere Europas mit
der ältesten Synagoge nördlich der Alpen. Dem jüdischen Kulturerbe trägt die Stadt Köln mit
der geplanten Archäologischen Zone und dem integrierten Jüdischen Museum Rechnung.
Darüber hinaus sind in Köln zahlreiche Gottes- und Gebetshäuser anderer Glaubensrichtungen
zu finden. Ein Zentrum für muslimische Gläubige entsteht derzeit mit der großen Zentral
moschee in Köln-Ehrenfeld. Mit dem Museum Schnütgen, das in einer der ältesten Kirchen
Kölns eine bedeutende Sammlung mittelalterlicher Kunst präsentiert, mit Kolumba, dem
Kunstmuseum des Erzbistums, sowie mit der Domschatzkammer verfügt Köln über weitere
Kunststätten mit religiös-spiritueller Ausrichtung.
Auch im Jahr 2015 finden Veranstaltungen zum Thema „Heiliges Köln“ statt: z. B. das Fest für
Alte Musik vom 06.-15. März, oder die Mülheimer Gottestracht (Fronleichnamsprozession
auf dem Rhein) am 04. Juni. Im Kolumba, dem Kunstmuseum des Erzbistums, geht es in der
neuen Jahresausstellung bis zum 24. August 2015 um das Thema „playing by heart“. Wie seit
vielen Jahren wird es auch 2015 mit dem „Romanischen Sommer“ Konzerte verschiedener
Musikrichtungen in den Romanischen Kirchen geben.

Das „Heilige Köln“ umfasst somit nicht allein die Stadt als katholisches Zentrum, als Stadt der
Kirchen, sondern vielmehr als weltoffenen Platz mit zahlreichen Religionsgemeinschaften
und vielfältiger Kultur, entsprechend der offenen und toleranten Mentalität der Kölner, wie
sie in einem Lied der kölschen Kultband Bläck Fööss zum Ausdruck kommt: „Ich ben Grieche,

UNESCO World Heritage Site Cologne Cathedral, twelve unique Romanesque churches and
diverse artistic and cultural treasures.
For centuries, Cologne Cathedral has been the hub and the trademark of the town on the Rhine.
With about six million visitors per year, the most-visited place of interest in Germany has always
been a centre of attraction for pilgrims, believers, architecture enthusiasts and tourists from
around the world. In 1996 UNESCO declared Cologne Cathedral as a World Heritage Site.
With the ring of the twelve Romanesque churches, Cologne has further heavyweights of church
architecture. After the destructions caused by the War and the reconstruction of the church
buildings, „Colonia Romanica“ has shone again in its full glory since 1985.
In Cologne in the Middle Ages there was one of the most significant Jewish quarters in Europe
with the oldest Synagogue north of the Alps. The city of Cologne takes account of the Jewish cultural heritage with the planned Archaeological Zone and the integrated Jewish Museum. In addition, in Cologne, numerous houses of God and of prayer from other faith traditions can be found.
There is currently a centre for Muslim faith with the large Central Mosque in Cologne Ehrenfeld.
With the Museum Schnütgen, which presents a significant collection of art from the Middle Ages
in one of Cologne‘s oldest churches; with Kolumba, the art museum of the Archbishopric as well
as with the Cathedral Treasury, Cologne has further centres of art with a religious and spiritual
focus.
Theme events to "Holy Cologne" will also be held in 2015: e.g. the Festival of Ancient Music from
06.-15. March or the Mülheimer Gottestract (Corpus Christi procession on the Rhine) on 04. June.
In Kolumba, the art museum of the Archdiocese, the theme for the new annual exhibition until
24. August 2015, is "playing by heart". As for many years, in 2015 the "Romanesque Summer"
concert series of various musical genres will take place in the Romanesque churches.
„Holy Cologne“ therefore does not only aptly describe the city as a Catholic centre, as a town of
churches, but much more as a cosmopolitan place with numerous religious communities and
diverse culture, which is in accordance with the open and tolerant mentality of the Colognians, as
expressed in a song by the Colognian cult band Bläck Fööss: „I am Greek, Turkish, Jewish, Muslim
and Buddhist, we all, we are only humans, before the Lord God we are the same“.

Cologne has a large number of parks and green areas. The outer green belt is one of the green
lungs of the cathedral town and encompasses almost the whole of the town centre. The flora and
the botanical garden are a sight for sore eyes for nature lovers with native and exotic plants. In
the former palm house built in the period of promoterism, conferences, galas and events of all
kinds take place. Objects by contemporary artists can be found in a natural area in the sculpture
park opened in 1997. The Rhine promenade in front of the old town, the folk garden, the town

Museen:
Der Rhein-Erft-Kreis verfügt über eine vielfältige Museenlandschaft, in der das Spektrum
der Ausstellungen von der Frühzeit bis zur Moderne reicht. Wie zum Beispiel das nach dem
Dadaisten und Surrealisten Max Ernst benannte Max Ernst Museum in Brühl. Im KERAMION in
Frechen kann man am besten in die Welt der historischen und modernen Keramik eintauchen.
Das Gebäude in Form einer Töpferscheibe beinhaltet weltweit begehrte Ausstellungen zum
Thema Keramik in allen Formen. Auch im Keramik Museum in Brühl kann man hoch geschätzte
Keramikausstellungen bewundern. Weitere Museen im Rhein-Erft-Kreis lassen die Herzen der
Oldtimerfreunde höher schlagen oder locken Schreibmaschinen-Fans in das „Qwertzuiopü“
Schreibmaschinen-Museum.
Schlösser und Burgen:
Der Rhein-Erft-Kreis liegt in einer der wasserburgreichsten Regionen Deutschlands. Unter den
mehr als 50 sehr gut erhaltenen Burgen und Schlössern sind zwei UNESCO-Welterbeschlösser,
Schloss Augustusburg und Falkenlust in Brühl. Neben diesen beiden ist beispielhaft das
„Gourmet“-Schloss Loersfeld in Kerpen zu nennen. In luxuriöser Atmosphäre kann man hier
speisen oder geschäftlichen Terminen nachgehen. Die Burg Konradsheim und das Schloss
Gracht in Erftstadt sowie das Schloss Bedburg, das Schloss Frens, die Burg Geretzhoven und

Golf:
Die Region zwischen Rhein und Erft gehört zum Verbund Golfnet-Rheinland. Hier entstanden
in den letzten Jahren acht exzellente Golfplätze, die für international bedeutende Turniere
bekannt sind. Mit dem Golf Club Gut Lärchenhof ist eine der besten Golfanlagen Europas im

Ob zu Fuß oder per Rad, für Erholungssuchende bietet der Naturpark Rheinland eine außeror

Kajaken & Klettern:
Nervenkitzel kann man in der Kletterhalle Chimpanzodrome in Frechen erleben. Auch die
modernste Art des „Kletterns“ wird im Rhein-Erft-Kreis angeboten. Für starke Nerven gibt es
im Schwindelfrei in Brühl Parcours- und House-Running in einer Höhe von 50 Metern. Eine
Kajak- oder Raftingtour auf der Erft ist für Groß und Klein ein unvergessliches Erlebnis – auch
für ungeübte Paddler.
FREIZEIT
Erlebnis Braunkohle:
Bei Interesse für Technik und Industrie ist man im Rhein-Erft-Kreis genau richtig. Der Bereich
Braunkohle mit seinen gigantischen Tagebaugruben und den Kraftwerken bietet ein beeindruckendes Technik-Sightseeing-Programm. In den drei Braunkohleabbaugebieten Garzweiler,

Museums:
The Rhine-Erft district has a manifold selection of museums, where the spectrum of exhibitions
goes from the protohistory until the modern times. As for example the Max Ernst Museum in
Brühl, named after the dadaist and surrealist Max Ernst. In the KERAMION in Frechen you can
dive into the world of historic and modern ceramics. The building in the shape of a potter‘s
wheel includes worldwide demanded exhibitions on the subject ceramics in all its forms. Also in
the Ceramics Museum in Brühl you can admire highly appreciated ceramic exhibitions. Further
museums of the Rhine-Erft district embrace fans of classic cars or attract typewriter fans to the
“Querzuiopü” typewriter museum.
Palaces & Castles:
The Rhine-Erft district is located in a region of Germany with many moated castles. Among the
more than 50 very well kept castles and châteaus, there are two UNESCO world heritage châteaus: Château Augustusburg and Falkenlust in Brühl. Besides these two, there is for example
the “Gourmet” Castle Loersfeld in Kerpen. In luxurious atmosphere you can dine or pursue your
business appointments. The Castle Konradsheim and the Château Gracht in Erfstadt, as well as
the Château Bedburg, the Château Frens, the Castle Geretzhoven and the Commander Castle are
further examples for meeting locations or event locations with a special ambience.

Golf:
The region between Rhine and Erft belongs to the network Golfnet-Rhineland. In the past 8 years,
excellent golf courses emerged here, which are known for internationally important tournaments. With the Golf Club Gut Lärchenhof, one of the best golf courses of Europe is located in the
Rhine-Erft district. Also well-known is the Gut Velderhof, on whose area a 27-holes championship
course has been built and the golf course Burg Konradsheim, which is ideal for beginners. The
120 ha big golf course Am alten Flies belongs to the top-ten golf courses in Germany and offers
with a well done layout of three loops à 9 holes an ideal place for an eventful golfing day.

Cycling & Hiking:
If by foot or by bicycle, the natural park Rhineland offers an extraordinary diversity for those seeking
for recovery. The contrasts of wood and lake areas, water meadows, flat open country, young
biotopes, modern industrial plants and recultivated areas offers a special, culture and scenery
experience. Countless beautiful biking and hiking routes along the Rhine or the Erft are available.
Also supra-regional hiking routes cross the Rhine-Erft district. Very demanded amongst hikers is
the Römerkanal hiking trail and amongst cyclist the Erft bicycle trail, the Three-Rivers-Tour, the
water castle route and the Rhine bicycle trail. The Rhine-Erft district is a part of the bicycle region
Rhineland – a region, which presents itself with a new network of bicycle routes and the app QuoRadis, an app for cyclist with navigation function.

Kayaking & Climbing:
You can experience thrill in the climbing hall Chimpanzodrome in Frechen. Also the most
modern way of “climbing” is offered in the Rhine-Erft district. For strong nerves, there is the
possibility to try Parcours and house-running in the Schwindelfrei in Brühl in 50 meters height.
A kayak or rafting tour on the Erft is an unforgettable experience for old and young – also for
untrained paddlers.

LEISURE TIME
Experience brown coal:
If you’re interested in technics and industry, then you are at the right place in the Rhine-Erft district. The brown coal area with its opencast mines and power stations offers an impressive technological sight-seeing programme. In the three open-cast mining areas of Garzweiler, Hambach
and Inden, the things to admire are not only steel giants, but also alternative energies and recultivated areas such as the well-loved local recreation area Marienfeld, where Pope Benedict XVI’s
closing church service at the World Youth Day 2005 was celebrated. Exhibitions about the topic
brown coal can be visited in historic ambience in the Château Paffendorf and in modern design in
the visitors centre of the RWE Power AG in Niederaußem, directly at the power plant. For groups
Rhein-Erft Tourismus e.V. offers tours dedicated to brown coal.
Phantasialand:
Experience unforgettable moments and pure fun in the summer as well as in the winter. Internationally awarded attractions, intoxicating shows and live entertainment enthuse in six unique

fürstlicher Pracht dienten. Daran angelehnt ist das „Fest des Kurfürsten“. Geplant ist ein
barockes Kostüm- und Familienspektakel mit traditionellem, geschichtlichem sowie historischem Hintergrund. Während des Festes soll, entsprechend der barocken Epoche gefeiert,
musiziert, getanzt und erlebt werden. Diese Atmosphäre, einmaliger Darbietungen,
geschichtsträchtiger Handlungen sowie barocker Klänge geben dem Event ein besonderes
