Back in 1993, Montreal fashion designer Mariouche Gagné needed to raise
money to finance her studies. Lacking
the resources to buy the necessary raw
materials, she cut up a fur coat belonging to her mother. This proved to be the
genesis of the Harricana label, which features fashions from recycled furs. Today,
Mariouche also transforms second-hand
clothes into imaginative original designs.
Her product line includes jackets, blouses,
gloves, headwear and more.

Museums, galleries, concerts, numerous festivals: culture-seeking tourists
will find themselves spoilt for choice in
Montreal. One of the most exciting recent projects is the Parisian Laundry, a
private gallery that organises large thematic exhibitions in the wonderfully restored rooms of a former laundry. The
Fonderie Darling is located in a former
foundry. The cultural centre comprises
an exhibition room, artist studios and the
Cluny Artbar (see under Cafés). Another
highlight is DHC/ART, a multi-storey art
centre that was recently much in the news
thanks to a highly regarded exhibition of

Die zweitgrösste Stadt Kanadas liegt auf einer Insel am Zusammenfluss des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms und des Ottawa-Flusses in der Provinz Quebec. Auf dem Stadtgebiet leben rund 1,6 Mio. Menschen,
die Agglomeration zählt 3,7 Mio. Einwohner. Montreal ist eines
der wichtigsten Handels- und Industriezentren Nordamerikas. Das
Klima ist von Gegensätzen geprägt: Der Winter ist lang, kalt und
schneereich, der Sommer relativ kurz, heiss und feucht. Besonders
stimmungsvoll ist der sogenannte Indian Summer, eine Periode im
Herbst mit warmen, klaren Tagen, frostigen Nächten und knallbunt
verfärbten Wäldern.

Canada’s second-largest city sits on an island at the confluence of the St.
Laurence River and the Ottawa River. Montreal itself is home to some
1.6 million people, with 3.7 million people living within its greater metropolitan area. Montreal is one of North America’s most important cities for trade and industry. Its climate is inclined to extremes. Winters are
long and cold with heavy snowfall. Summers are relatively short, hot
and moist. Of particular appeal is Indian summer, the name given to a
period in autumn when days are warm and clear, nights are frosty and
the forests awash in colours as the leaves turn.
GESCHICHTE
Die Gegend des heutigen Montreal war seit Jahrtausenden von Irokesen und anderen nordamerikanischen Indianern bewohnt, als
1535 der erste französische Entdecker die Insel betrat. 1642 gründete die französische Krone unter dem Namen Ville-Marie eine erste
Siedlung, die 1760 von den Briten erobert wurde. Wichtigster Handelszweig war damals der Pelzhandel. Im Zug der Industrialisierung
erlebte die Metropole im 19. Jahrhundert einen starken Aufschwung.
Bleibende Spuren im Stadtbild hinterlassen haben die Weltausstellung (1967) und die Olympischen Sommerspiele (1976).

Als ehemalige französische Kolonie ist Quebec bis heute eine gallische Sprachinsel im weitgehend anglophonen Nordamerika geblieben. In Montreal sind rund zwei Drittel der Einwohner französischer Muttersprache, etwas über 20 Prozent sind englischsprachig.
Viele Städter sprechen allerdings beide Sprachen fliessend. Der
Grossraum Montreal gilt nach Paris als zweitgrösste französischsprachige Agglomeration der Welt.
Reflecting its status as a one-time French colony, the province of Quebec
remains a French-speaking island within largely English-speaking North
America. Some two-thirds of Montrealers have French as their first language; slightly more than 20 per cent are native speakers of English.
Many city residents speak both languages fluently. After Paris, greater
Montreal ranks as the second-biggest French-speaking agglomeration
in the world.

The Montreal underground metro system consists of only four lines,
but many of the areas of interest to visitors are well served. Taxis are
relatively inexpensive but because of the size of the city fares for long
journeys can be quite pricy. The downtown area and Old Montreal can
be comfortably covered on foot.
Prior to the arrival of the first French explorers in 1535, the island covered by modern-day Montreal was home for thousands of years to the
Iroquois and other aboriginal North Americans. In 1642 the French monarchy established a first settlement known as Ville-Marie, which was conquered by the British in 1760. During this period the fur trade was the
main form of commerce. Nineteenth-century industrialisation was the
catalyst for a period of strong growth. The 1967 world exhibition and the
1976 Olympic Games have left a lasting impression on the cityscape.

ÖFFENTLICHER VERKEHR
Die Montrealer U-Bahn (Métro) umfasst nur vier Linien, viele der für
Touristen interessanten Viertel sind jedoch gut erschlossen. Auch
Taxis sind an sich nicht besonders teuer, aber wegen der Weitläufigkeit der Stadt läppern sich bei längeren Fahrten doch ansehnliche
Beträge zusammen. Downtown und Vieux-Montréal lassen sich gut
zu Fuss erkunden. •
