Olympathon
Calendar Dates
Teachers, students and parents braved the wild weather on Friday
morning to participate in our Olympathon. After our spectacular
Opening Ceremony and lighting of the cauldron our events were
spread out across the school grounds and the students rotated in
their groups to try a sample of Olympic inspired events. Many thanks
to all friends and family who sponsored students. Please note that
the Olympathon money that has been pledged is due to our school
office on Friday 31st August.
Questacon Science Squad Visits
Questacon Science Squads visited K-6 this week with two fabulous
science shows. K-2 looked at Bubbles & Senses whilst 3-6 looked at
Climate Change and Sound Effects. The students thoroughly
enjoyed the show and were totally engaged in the presenters and
the experiments. If you ever have the chance to visit Canberra the
children would really enjoy the day at Questacon — Australia’s
National Technology and Science Centre.

Week 5
School Open Night
The school's annual Open Night will be held next Wednesday 22nd August. This night is for new
families to the school who are interested in finding out about the variety of programs we can offer
their child. The evening will begin at 5pm near the school hall for a school tour followed by an
information presentation in the Kindergarten rooms. Please let any interested parents know about
this event. Parents should RSVP to the school office by next Tuesday 21st August.
Kindergarten Orientation
The Kindergarten Orientation Morning will take place on Tuesday 4th September. This event is
for the new Kindergarten 2013 children and their parents. On this morning we will talk about what
to expect next year. The children will spend time in the classroom with their teachers, friends and
older buddies for next year. If your child attends the Preschool this year, Preschool staff will walk
them up to the big school around 9.15 on the morning. Parents should come to the hall by
9.30am.
Dance Fever
If your child is intending on participating in the Dance Challenge at Homebush, please return your
notes by the end of this week. The Dance Challenge is open to all students in Years 3 - 6. When
numbers are confirmed, more information about tickets and bus travel will be sent home. Please
do not send any money for the Dance Challenge yet.
Dance News
The children in the Junior and Senior dance will be representing the school at Showcase at the
Juniors on Thursday 30th August. All ticket orders should now be in at the school office as any
unsold tickets will need to be returned to offer other schools. All children in the groups will be sent
home some of their costume before the night. Many of the Junior dancers will need to check that
they have their black socks as many were missing for the Education Week performance. Parents
are also encouraged to wash their child's white pants before the night please as some are
showing signs of some wear and tear! Thank you.
P&C News
The next P&C meeting will take place next Monday 20th August in the library at 7pm. All
welcome. The P&C are currently asking for donations for the Father's Day Stall. Suitable items
for donations include coffee cups, chocolates, beer mugs, aftershave, car items, football items.
The P&C appreciate your support.
Principals Message
Thank you to the parents who braved the weather and joined us on Friday morning for the
Olympathon. A special thank you to the House Captains who organised the opening ceremony —
it was a fun way to start the day. We are asking the students how they would like the Olympathon
sponsorship money spent. Our first purchase will be giant chess pieces for the outdoor chess
board. All money raised will go towards purchasing items for the students to use.
As a response to our community’s needs we are offering a small number of 3 day per week
places at the Preschool in 2013. If families would be interested in one of these places can you
please contact me via the school office.
In todays newsletter there is a flyer for the Back to School exhibition at the Mascot Library and
Museum. Many of our students have their ideas on “schools in the future” displayed as part of the
exhibition. Also our Year 6 students put together a video comparing school activities in the past
with the present which is being played as part of the exhibition. Congratulations to our budding
film makers! It is worthwhile visiting the exhibition and should generate a lot of conversation with
your children.

LIBRARY BOOK FAIR
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported our book fair either by
buying a book to donate or purchasing a book to take home and enjoy. We had over 70
books donated from the following children and their families. These donations are
greatly appreciated. If you donated a book you can be the first person to
borrow it from the library at your next library lesson! Don’t forget next week is Book
Week and we are encouraging students to read as much as possible to celebrate!
