We are working hard to empower and support sexual assault survivors
and their loved ones. We are committed to eliminating sexual violence
in our society through community education, training and activism.
Inside, you will find highlights of some of the many accomplishments
from this year—remember, these accomplishments are only possible
through the help of your generous donations and our dedicated
volunteer base! We at SBRCC thank you for your assistance and
support, and hope you enjoy reading about how we are working to
inspire change in our community.

Be 1 in 500… Empowering our Community
If you saw our flags flying down State Street this spring, then you may already know
that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)! This year’s theme for SAAM
was all about highlighting our all inclusive and supportive community. Our campaign,
Be 1 in 500, was a heart warming success! We photographed
more than 500 community members holding posters with
positive and empowering statements to survivors of sexual
assault. Those photographs were then edited into SBRCC’s
very first YouTube video on our public channel. The video
was accompanied with a cover of the song, “Home,” by two
of our local high school students, Nathaniel Neumann, Teen
Star Finalist, and Dahlia Kahn. Be 1 in 500 made its debut
on Denim Day, Wednesday, April 24, at our presentation of
Project Unbreakable at UCSB.
We are thankful to have had such a large number of our community
members participate in Be 1 in 500 and demonstrate their support
for ending sexual assault. Survivors often encounter large obstacles
in healing, one of those being that oftentimes people do not believe
them. By sending encouraging messages, we’re sending the message
to survivors that they’re not alone, we believe them, and that they
are stronger than the assault. We’re also sending a message to
perpetrators to let them know that as a community, we stand firm
with survivors of sexual assault.

Be 1 in 500… Fortaleciendo nuestra comunidad
Si ya vio usted, las banderas ondeantes de la calle Estado esta primavera, entonces
quizás ya sabe que este mes de abril es el Mes de la concientización sobre el asalto
sexual (SAAM por sus siglas en inglés). El tema de este año ha sido el de acentuar
nuestra comunidad como una comunidad que nos recibe a
todos con beneplácito y nos apoya. Nuestra campaña Be 1 in
500—Sé uno de 500, fue un emotivo éxito. Fotografiamos más
de 500 miembros de nuestra comunidad sosteniendo posters
con mensajes positivos que ayudaran a fortalecer a nuestros
sobrevivientes de asalto sexual. Esas fotografías fueron editadas
y puestas en el primer video de SBRCC que se subió al internet
en nuestro sitio web público. El video fue acompañado por la
canción de “Home” que dos estudiantes de escuela secundaria
de Santa Barbara—Nathaniel Neumann, un concursante de Teen Star, and Dahlia Kahn

Project Unbreakable
In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM),
UCSB’s Take Back the Night, CARE, and Santa Barbara Rape
Crisis Center co-sponsored photographer, Grace Brown’s
Project Unbreakable.
The event, held at UCSB, presented photographs of
survivors of sexual assault holding a poster with a quote
from their perpetrator, as a project of healing through art.
Thousands of survivors have taken back their voice through
their photographs.
Project Unbreakable was created by 20-year-old Grace Brown,
a photography student from Massachusetts, who now travels
around the country and internationally, speaking about her awareness project to various schools and organizations.
Brown’s Tumblr blog has been named one of the top 30 blogs to follow by Time magazine.

Our Be 1 in 500 SAAM Campaign was sparked as a response to Project Unbreakable. We wanted to welcome Grace
and the stories of the survivors she has photographed with a video that demonstrated Santa Barbara’s commitment
to ending sexual violence.
El Proyecto Unbreakable
Para honrar el Mes de la concientización sobre el asalto sexual (SAAM por sus siglas en inglés), UCSB Tomemos
la noche, CARE y el SBRCC copatrocinaron el proyecto Unbreakable de la fotógrafa Grace Brown. El evento, llevado a
cabo en UCSB, mostró fotografías de sobrevivientes de asalto sexual sosteniendo posters con frases que sus violadores
les dijeron, como un proyecto de recuperación a través del arte. Miles de sobrevivientes han retomado su voz a través
de las fotografías.
El Proyecto Unbreakable fue creado por Grace Brown de 20
años de edad, una estudiante de fotografía de Massachusetts, que
viaja alrededor del mundo y habla internacionalmente sobre el
proyecto y la concientización sobre el asalto sexual a varias escuelas
y organizaciones. El blog de Brown ha sido nombrado uno de los 30

Agency of the Year!
We were honored to be presented with the 2013 Youth Agency Award at the 12th Annual Santa Barbara Youth Leadership
Awards Banquet, presented by the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department. We were recognized alongside
Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties, Inc. for our outstanding contribution to our
community, most notably with our youth.
“The Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center is truly recognized as an organization in our community that stands out as a premier support
agency to those in great need. In addition to being there when some of our most vulnerable victims need you, the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis
Center is there with preventive measures and educational programs for all the community, such as your Be One in Five Hundred Campaign
or your Denim Days. The efforts you put in involving young people in gaining knowledge about being safe and sound, has not gone
unnoticed by others, thus why you are being bestowed this honor of Agency of the Year.”
We were proud to have two of our teens nominated and recognized as youth leaders, as their merits fit in perfectly with
this year’s theme of “Youth Leaders…Making History.” Education Intern and Teen Advocate, Alison Mally, and Peer Mentor,
Keyla Lazaro, from our Amigas Positivas/Positive Peers Program at Dos Pueblos High School, were honored for their dedication
and commitment to ending sexual assault and raising awareness in our community.
¡Organización del Año!
Este año fuimos honrados con la presentación del premio: Organización del Año para la Juventud 2013 (2013 Youth
Agency Award) en el Banquete Anual de Santa Barbara Youth Leadership, presentado por la ciudad de Santa Barbara
Parks and Recreation Department. Fuimos reconocidos con Planned Parenthood de Santa Barbara, Ventura y San Luis Obispo
Counties, Inc. Por nuestras sobresalientes contribuciones a la comunidad y particularmente, a nuestra juventud.

The Military’s Problem is Our Problem
We must stand united in support of sexual assault survivors and take bold action to prevent sexual violence.
According to the Defense Department, 26,000 servicemen and women anonymously reported incidents of sexual violence
in 2012, an increase from 19,000 in 2011. Of this number, fewer than 15% of assaults were actually reported and less than 1% of
sexual assaults resulted in court-martial conviction.
Rather than having equal access to the justice, sexual assault survivors in the military run a big risk if they report rape.
Survivors are mocked and intimidated by their commanders and all too often their careers are jeopardized.
Perhaps the most ironic scandal involved a Sergeant in Fort Hood Texas who worked for the Sexual Assault Prevention and
Response Office. The very officer whose job it was to advocate for sexual assault victims was himself accused of sexual misconduct.
The military has turned a blind eye to this culture where sexual predators thrive. And upon discharge, these perpetrators
will be civilians again.
In the wake of these recent scandals, we are again reminded of the importance of organizations like our local Rape Crisis
Center. It is imperative that survivors and their families receive professional counseling and crisis intervention. But equally
important, we must prioritize educating our community, and especially our youth, about sexual violence. Only a holistic
approach can begin change the status quo.
With your support, we can empower not only survivors, but also our community through education and awareness to
create a society free of sexual violence.

El problema de la Milicia es nuestro problema
Debemos mantenernos unidos para los sobrevivientes del asalto sexual y tomar acciones para prevenir la violencia sexual.
De acuerdo con el Departamento de Defensa, 26,000 militares, hombres y mujeres, reportaron anónimamente incidentes de
violencia sexual en 2012, un incremento de 19,000 en comparación con 2011. De estos números, menos del 15% fueron de hecho
reportados y menos del 1% resultaron en una convicción por corte marcial.

our 5th annual celebration of chocolate & wine
This year marked our 5th annual Chocolate de Vine! Two hundred and fifty supporters came together at the Santa Barbara
Woman’s Club to enjoy our mouth-watering celebration of chocolate and California wines. Our master of ceremonies, Sean
English, set the mood for a fun night of delicious chocolate creations, exquisite wine, and fundraising! Spectacular items were
up for bid, for both our silent and live auction, including a very exclusive getaway to Hearst Castle.
As it has become tradition, Chocolate de Vine featured a judged competition of the chocolatiers’ creations. Awards included
Best Table Top Presentation—Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro; Best Flavor Appeal/Chocolate—Shaybu Chocolates; and Best
Flavor Appeal/Chocolate Dessert and Table Display—Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro. The coveted People’s Choice Award
went to Mama Ganache Artisan Chocolates.
After the awards, attendees danced the night away to the sounds of Area 51, whose repertoire ranged from funk and Disco
to Soul and R&B. Thank you to all of our generous donors, sponsors, and amazing volunteers, who made this event a huge
success. Save the date for our 6th annual Chocolate de Vine event next year in May!

Este año marcó nuestra Quinta celebración anual de ¡Chocolate de Vine! Doscientos cincuenta seguidores y amigos vinieron
al Santa Barbara Woman’s Club a disfrutar de nuestra deliciosa celebración de los chocolates y vinos de California. Nuestro
maestro de ceremonias, Sean English, inició una noche de diversión para disfrutar las deliciosas creaciones de chocolate, el
vino exquisito, y la recaudación de fondos para el centro. Artículos espectaculares fueron subastados, para las dos, la subasta
silenciosa y la subasta en vivo, incluyendo un muy exclusivo viaje a Hearst Castle.
