Deputy Chairman/
Group Managing Director's message
Dear fellow Bousteadians,
As we head into the second half of 2016,
tough market conditions continue to
persist. Despite these headwinds, the
Group remains as resilient as ever,
delivering a reasonable performance
premised on strategic planning and
acute foresight.
For the first quarter of the financial
year, the Group recorded a profit
before tax of RM36 million on the
back of a revenue of RM1.9 billion.
Amidst a challenging environment,
the majority of our Divisions delivered
a satisfactory performance. The
Plantation Division was the highest
contributor to the Group, mainly driven
by gains realised from disposals of
non-core land.
In line with this, as part of our
continuous drive to unlock value by
divesting in non-core businesses, we
also undertook the disposal of assets
by Johan Ceramics Berhad. Our focus
is clear – to improve contributions from
our business units to Group earnings.
effort, dedication and support towards
realising Boustead’s objectives.
Indeed, this is testament to the
effectiveness of our business strategy.
Challenges will exist in business, that is
a given. The onus is upon us to rise to
the occasion and have forward-thinking
plans in place.
Last but not least, I would also like to take
this opportunity to wish all Bousteadians
‘Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.’
While I am confident that the Group
will continue to deliver positive results,
it does not withstand the fact that this
comes only through hard work. On this
note, I would like to commend your
Thank you.
In the coming months, I urge all
Bousteadians not only to maintain but
also to push ourselves further in the
pursuit of our goals.

The Accountant Development Programme (ADP)
I
t was a significant milestone for the Group when Boustead
Holdings Berhad launched the Accountant Development
Programme (ADP) on 19 May 2016 at The Royale Chulan
Damansara. The launch was officiated by Mr. Daniel Ebinesan,
Group Finance Director of Boustead Holdings Berhad.
Formerly known as The Accountant Trainee Programme,
the programme has been rebranded as the Accountant
Development Programme or ADP to better reflect the holistic
approach and development opportunities provided to the
participants or the ADP Associates.
Other attendees at the auspicious event included the Group’s
Chief Financial Officers, Senior Finance Team as well as past
and present participants of the ADP programme.
A collaboration between Group Finance and Group Human
Capital Management, the programme provides opportunities
to finance and accounting graduates to pursue either the
ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or MICPA qualification whilst pursuing
a successful career with the Boustead Group. Job-rotation is
an essential part of the programme, providing the Associates
with the insights into business processes, strategies, culture
and Boustead Group brands through the mentorship of
Mr. Daniel and the Group’s Senior Finance Team.
The event was also graced by En. Johan Mahmood Merican,
the CEO of TalentCorp Malaysia. Johan shared with the
audience his wealth of experience in developing and nurturing
talents and his personal experience in charting his own career
which was well received particularly by the ADP participants.

held a ‘Transfer of Know-How Graduation Ceremony’ in Tuaran,
Sabah on 12 April 2016.
BDNC and BSES have worked closely together to ensure
the success of Malaysia’s submarine programme. A crucial
element of this programme is the transfer of technology
from DCNS.
The ceremony marked the ‘graduation’ of personnel of the
two companies who were trained in specialised areas related
to submarine maintenance, such as electrical, mechanics and
hydraulics. On hand to present the certificates to the graduates
were BHIC’s Chief Financial Officer, En. Ahmad Nordin
Mohammad, and BDNC’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jean-Luc
Bianchini.
The Transfer of Know-How Programme is aimed at
developing a high level of skills among Malaysians to
undertake maintenance and repair of submarines. This
unique programme also trains them to adhere to the
Submarine Safety Rules, and supports BDNC in fulfilling the
obligations of the ISS contract awarded to the company.

"I believe I can fly!"
I
started talking about wanting to do tandem skydiving
with my friend, Rique, last year. After doing some research
about it for four months, we decided that this is the year
we were going to do it. Thus, on 30 April 2016, we packed
and headed to Langkawi where the skydiving facility is
located. We decided to jump with Skydive Langkawi and
they confirmed our jump for 1 May 2016 at 9.00am.
At 7.00am the next morning, we got ready, making sure
everything was tip top for the jump. We were brought to the
Skydive Langkawi office where we signed a contract, with
standard waivers should something go wrong. As soon as
I signed the contract and the harness was put on, I knew
this was really happening.
Published by: Boustead Holdings Berhad (3871-H) Printed by: Pencetak Weng Fatt Sdn Bhd (19847-W)
We were then introduced to our instructor Mark, who is
also the owner of Skydive Langkawi, before being whisked
away to complete the skyjump training. Then we were
taken to the airport to board our plane. It was a crop-duster
type plane with barely enough room for five people. There
was no door, either, just a plastic covering. The plane took
off and we ascended pretty fast.

When we reached 8,000 feet, Mark asked
me to sit on his lap and get ready. The harness
compressed my pelvis and ribcage and we
stumbled along the plane. It was at that moment that
the absurdity of the situation took hold.
I was feeling numbly calm until they opened the plastic
covering. Then I was excited when my friend Rique went
first. It was unreal to see her fall out of the plane. Then Mark
brought us to the edge of the plane. Since he was holding on,
I was literally dangling over the side of the plane.
Then I was waiting and waiting for the moment. Finally, we
both fell out of the plane. I couldn’t even describe it. The
jump was an absolutely amazing experience, like nothing
I have experienced before. Nothing can compare to the
mind-blowing sensation of jumping from a plane and freefalling 10,000 feet to the earth below. Those were the most
interesting and enjoyable few seconds of my life. We were
free-falling for about 60 seconds. For a few seconds, I had a
sense of falling. Then we were falling faster and faster as the
seconds passed. Then it became a sort of floating sensation.
The wind was crazy and extremely enjoyable. Just seeing
what was below was incredible. I adjusted to the strange new
reality and stretched out my arms, feeling the sky run through
my fingers like scorched cotton candy.
After a while, Mark pulled the parachute and it jerked us up.
We glided down towards the ground. He looped the canvas
over my fingers and let me control the parachute for a while
and we spun around. Pull left to spin left, right to spin right,
both down hard to stop. I was soaring across the sky and it
was the most amazing, freeing feeling.
We then slowly swept in to land and my graceful out of body
experience ended in a graceless heap on the floor. It was over!
The big smile on my face said it all. I thank God for the once-ina-lifetime experience I had with Rique and Skydive Langkawi.
