LIMA’13 is the premier destination for aerospace and maritime manufacturers targeting Asia Pacific growth markets in the defence, enforcement, civil and commercial sectors. Deputy Chairman/ Group Managing Director's message Dear fellow Bousteadians, As we plough through 2013, I am reminded of this philosophy - only the strong survive. Challenges will always be present particularly in the business environment and as fellow Bousteadians, we have to rise to the challenge and meet it head-on. In the first quarter of this financial year, our results were impacted by external conditions, particularly crude palm oil prices. This is a telling sign that we have to strengthen our productivity not only in the Plantation Division but equally important in all other divisions. We must build value ensuring that there is organic growth in all divisions. To do this, we have to assess our various work scopes to take a frank view on how we can improve productivity further, contribute to the overall productivity push of our department, business unit or division. A good case in point is the recent effort undertaken by the Pharmaceutical Division to expand its business prospects in the Middle East and North Africa region. They have entered into a joint-venture with a Saudi Arabian Group and we hope this will bear strong results in the foreseeable future. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad (BHIC) and BHPetrol, which were both honoured with notable accolades in recognition of their strong performance and brand presence. BHIC was awarded the prestigious BrandLaureate President’s Award in the BrandLaureate Best Brands Awards 2012-2013, in the category of Heavy Industry - Marine and Shipbuilding. Meanwhile, BHPetrol received a bronze award in the Automotive Fuel category of the Putra Brand Awards 2013. Perutusan Timbalan Pengerusi/ Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan Covering 783 sq. m. of space in Hall 2, BHIC’s pavilion which replicated the shape of a naval craft was one of the biggest pavilions at LIMA’13. Exhibitors consisted of BHIC’s principal subsidiaries. The pavilion attracted many dignitaries from the government, the corporate sector and overseas visitors. BHIC’s Managing Director, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Ramli Hj. Mohd Nor, briefing the Prime Minister on the Littoral Combatant Ship (LCS). Also present are former Defence Minister, YB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Boustead Holding Berhad’s Deputy Chairman/ Group Managing Director, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin Staf Boustead yang dihargai, Notable dignitaries were Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Almu’tasimu Billahi Muhibuddin Tuanku Al-Haj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, and the Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak. In the remaining months ahead, I am confident we will work together to meet our KPI and where possible, surpass them. Of course this will not be an easy task but if we pull our resources together, we will be able to achieve much. In anticipation of your hard work, I thank you for your efforts. Sehubungan dengan itu saya mengucapkan terima kasih atas usaha gigih anda. Last but not least, I would like to wish 'selamat berpuasa' to our Muslim Bousteadians. Akhir kata, selamat berpuasa kepada staf Boustead yang beragama Islam. Nottingham subjects top world rankings T he University of Nottingham is featured among the best in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2013. The league table shows that Nottingham’s position has improved significantly - appearing among the world’s elite institutions (top 200) in 29 out of 30 disciplines. It also features 21 Nottingham subjects in the top 100 compared with 14 last year, as well as five in the top 50 compared with two last year. The University was ranked particularly highly in Pharmacy & Pharmacology (15th), Education (26th), Law (34th), Geography (50th), and Agriculture & Forestry (50th). More than 2,800 universities worldwide were evaluated as part of the survey, with 678 ranked in total. Now in its third year, the QS World University Rankings by Subject series also takes into consideration the opinion of academics and employers via a global survey. The series is the only international evaluation that allows prospective students to compare universities in their particular area of interest. The University of Nottingham’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Karen Cox, said: “To see five of our subject areas reach the top 50 is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the teaching and research excellence of our academic colleagues. The last few years have been turbulent for the field of education. To see that we are continuing to rise through the ranks is great news and demonstrates that as a university we are performing exceptionally well within the higher education sector.” Group of friends hanging out and though one student is temporarily bound to a wheelchair, his friends are not affected by it D ignity is a basic human right and yet all too often, hectic lifestyles and thoughtlessness mean that we fail to offer everyone around us the respect that they deserve. In order to address this issue, students at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) have developed the Curb Your Ego campaign. This platform aims to encourage all members of the UNMC community (and beyond) to respect others, regardless of their position, beliefs and social status, as well as to be less judgmental towards others and to be more humble. “We want to create a world in which people are able to set aside their position in society, their financial standing, intellectual ability, educational level and even their good looks and charming behaviour and to treat everyone with respect and dignity,” said Cassandra Tam, the head of the team. The students, currently in their first year at Nottingham University Business School, developed the proposal for the Curb Your Ego campaign as part of the course requirements for their Entrepreneurship & Business module. The group of six was introduced to the concept of social enterprise after attending the Youth Social Business Summit 2012 organised by myHarapan. Their proposal for a social enterprise moved from theory to practice when they decided to implement the idea under Enactus (formerly known as SIFE) UNMC, a student society at the University. Curb Your Ego was launched on 1 April 2013 at UNMC. The first week of the campaign focused on creating awareness of the programme among staff, while the second week specifically targeted the student body. Having launched the campaign via their Facebook page and on campus, the team has already received a request from Taylors University to transfer this project to their own university communities. The committee members also have plans to extend this campaign to University of Nottingham campuses in the UK and China during a forthcoming student exchange programme. Though it was still early, the group was energetic and the environment was filled with excitement. Our flight (MH 750) departed at 9.00 a.m. to the heart of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh city. Our flight touched down at Tan Son Nhat Airport and we were warmly welcomed by the local guide, Mr. Khoa. After some shopping, we went to Satay House Restaurant (a restaurant owned by a Malaysian in Ho Chi Minh) before checking in to the luxurious 5-star New World Hotel. Admiring the local craftwork The main event for the day was the Gala Dinner themed ‘Bollywood in Vietnam’ where everyone dressed like Bollywood stars. Dinner was accompanied by fun activities and games which were in line with our Boustead Core Values (Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Excellence). The main highlight was the Best Dressed Competition where the winners were crowned as King and Queen of Bollywood. It was a tough decision because the King of Bollywood title was a tie between Mr. Daniel and Viknesh. The day ended with a lucky King & Queen of Bollywood draw where we made sure everyone got a prize. Team activity to create a spider web Day 2 kicked off with a visit to the War Museum. The visit was truly an eye opener where we witnessed the atrocities of war and how it affected generations even after the war had ended. We then had a scrumptious lunch at Serai Restaurant followed On board the sampan along Mekong Delta by a trip around the city where we made a stop at Phuong Nam Lacquerware Factory, Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral and Diamond Plaza. g river Dinner on the Saigon Cruise condensed milk with crushed ice on top resulting in coffee with a rich chocolate-like taste, making any coffee addict happy. For our last dinner there, we were treated to an Indian fine dining experience at Tandoor Restaurant and concluded the day with another trip to a night market to shop for the last time there and to end the trip with a bang. The last day of the retreat finally arrived and with very heavy hearts, we packed our bags filled with Vietnamese merchandise for our journey back to our homeland. Though we had bought countless souvenirs for our friends and family, nothing could beat the memories we had with all of our colleagues during this trip. Most importantly, this trip managed to enhance the bond between every member in the Group Finance team. Ho Chi Minh City is well known to be a shopping haven. The best place to do so is at Ben Thanh Market which is only a stone’s throw from where we were staying. After the tiring shopping session, we had our dinner on board the Saigon Ship restaurant; a floating restaurant which sailed along the Saigon River. We had a Spanish twist in our Vietnamese experience as we got the opportunity to watch the Flamenco dance before being serenaded by classical music by a pair of very talented local musicians. The shopping continued after dinner, this time at the night market beside Ben Thanh market. Speech by Group Finance Director Feeling like Bollywood stars... We started the day with a two-hour ride to the colourful outskirt of My Tho, overlooking picturesque rice fields along the way. Upon arrival, we were treated with coconut water on a boat trip on the Mekong River and visited Honey Bee farm and Coconut Candy shop. Later, we proceeded to a somewhat adventure of a lifetime for most of us where we rode in sampans along the palm shaded creeks and rivers. One shot from the War Museum We couldn’t miss the opportunity to taste Vietnamese coffee (Ca phe nau da in Vietnamese) while in Vietnam. It consists of finely ground Vietnamesegrown dark roasted coffee, individually brewed with a quarter to half glass of “Congratulations to the organising committee for the excellent planning of this year’s Team Building event. By far, this was indeed a better organised event which was very enjoyable. We came home really refreshed and rebonded.” - Mr. Daniel “The highlight for me was surely the Gala Dinner where everybody dressed in Bollywood fashion. The activities also enhanced our team spirit.” - Salmah “The retreat was one of the most enjoyable ones so far with a perfect mix of fun, games, sightseeing and shopping.” - Raja 10 11 The Royale Bintang news 2013 2 BHPetrol offers holiday trip to Doreamon’s Expo in Taiwan 20-22 April February B YBhg. Upon arrival at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, we were greeted by a local representative and transferred to Pattaya by bus via BangkokChon Buri-Pattaya Motorway. Upon arrival at the Pattaya Beach, we made a quick stop at Pattaya Factory Outlet. We then visited the Arts of Kingdom exhibition, where we were fascinated by the beautiful artwork and historical collections. The majestic-looking building bears unique Italian Renaissance and Neo-Classical styles of architecture. We had our dinner at a local halal restaurant and checked in at our hotel. It was a free and easy session that night. Some of us went for a stroll at the Pattaya Beach, getting good bargains at the night market while enjoying the scenery. We then had our lunch at a local Muslim restaurant before heading for some retail therapy at the MBK Mall. We had a local Thai Muslim dinner before we returned to the hotel. After a hearty breakfast, we departed to Pattaya Coral Island by boat. We stopped by at a floating jetty where some of us tried out parasailing. We relaxed, swam, snorkelled and bronzed ourselves on the golden beach under the tropical sun. Some of us also learned how to handle firearms at the island’s shooting range. 2nd Day We returned to the hotel to freshen up and then went out again. We returned to Pattaya Bay in the afternoon and went to Volcano Cave where the Gems Gallery Factory is located. Then, we moved on to Nong Nooch Village where we were entertained by the Thai cultural performance, Elephant Show and Muay Thai (traditional Thai boxing) demonstration. We had our lunch at a Thai Muslim restaurant and then proceeded to Bangkok. The Riverfront Shopping Area We started the day by visiting Chao Phraya River and the Grand Palace. The Palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782. The King, his Court and his Royal Government were based on the grounds of the palace until 1925. The present monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), currently resides at Chitralda Palace, but the Grand Palace is still used for official events. Several royal ceremonies and state functions are held within the walls of the Palace every year. Group photo at the Grand Palace The girls in happy mood rp shooter Not really a sha At the Coral Island Zaidi smiling for the camera before the big waves After breakfast at the hotel, we checked out and went to the Chatuchak or Jatujak weekend market, which is not only the largest weekend market in Thailand but also the largest in the world. Frequently called ‘JJ’, it stretches over 35 acres (0.14 k.m.) and consists of more than 5,000 stalls. We were told that JJ started as an ordinary Sunday market but has grown to be the biggest market of its kind in the world. It is estimated that the market receives 20,000 visitors each day. 4th Day Time to lean back and relax Group photo at the Arts of Kingdom Most stalls only open on Saturdays and Sundays, though Jatujak Plaza, the modern and ‘higher-end’ section, is open daily. Some of us even exceeded our budget, running out of Thai baht and had to exchange our currency at steep rates so as not to miss out the great bargains at JJ! Group photo at KLIA In the evening, we went to Asiatique The Riverfront shopping area. It is the first and biggest lifestyle project in Asia, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. We had our dinner at a local halal restaurant, and then transferred to our hotel for a check-in. The dinner was indeed delicious and full of authentic Thailand local cuisines. 3rd Day Nong Nooch Village The boss being briefed by a tour guide After lunch and on our way to Suvarnabhumi Airport, we stopped by the Thep-Prasit Bee Factory, a company that specialises in wild and natural bee products taken from specialty flora sources in the mountainous areas of northern Thailand. It has a network of bee farms in Thailand and all of its products are in compliance with Thai FDA requirements. The business is opened to serve its central purpose as Thailand’s biggest educational bee farm. We found the visit very informative as we learnt all about bees from the company’s representative - beekeeping, the benefits of royal jelly, mature honey, bee pollen and pure honey itself. We also had the chance to taste royal jelly and honey. Finally, we departed to Suvarnabhumi Airport with a heavy heart, as it was the last day of our retreat. We arrived at Menara Boustead around midnight. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the management for this retreat as well as Boustead Travel’s staff for their excellent travel arrangements.
