The award presentation was held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel Kuala Lumpur on 22 August 2014. Dear fellow Bousteadians, As we move past the third quarter of the year, I am pleased to note that we have successfully weathered through a challenging period. Though our Divisions were impacted by cyclical considerations and external pressures, the Group delivered growth in the second quarter. During this period we also undertook a number of strategic acquisitions in order to build up our diverse stable of investments. With a view to expanding our presence in the oil and gas industry, we acquired parcels of land located in Pulau Indah, Klang, amounting to 69.88 acres. This includes prime sea-fronting land as well as the Port Klang Cruise Centre, which comprises a five-story cruise terminal building and jetty. In tandem with this, we also embarked on the acquisition of PFC Engineering Berhad. These acquisitions will enable the Group to improve our capabilities and provide a wider range of services for the maritime industry, coupled with our existing businesses via our Heavy Industries Division. Meanwhile, in line with our drive to strengthen our Property Division, the Group expanded beyond Malaysian shores with the acquisition of Hyde Park Hotel in London, United Kingdom. On the back of our portfolio of property investments in Malaysia, this will allow the Group to tap into the vast opportunities of the hotel market and hospitality industry in London. I am confident that these initiatives will bear much fruit for the Group and will support our growth for the longterm, both in terms of adding value to our businesses and creating attractive career opportunities. As a long-established conglomerate, even as we continue to advance via our strategic expansion plans, we are conscious of the need to also grow holistically as a dynamic and forward-thinking Group. There were also positive developments for the Plantation Division, as the Group received a favourable ruling in a court case pertaining to Native Customary Rights (NCR) land in Sg. Kelimut, Kanowit District in Sarawak. This certainly bodes well for the Division and we look forward to furthering our progress in the State. In addition to these achievements, we have also remained committed to our role as a responsible corporate citizen. For the ninth consecutive year, BHPetrol recently organised the annual Orange Run 2014. It was indeed heartening to see so many runners participating to raise funds for charitable causes, while at the same time adopting a healthy lifestyle. This year, a total of RM40,000 was presented to four deserving recipients, namely National Cancer Council Malaysia (MAKNA), Good Samaritan Home, as well as RM10,000 each to the families of two members of the Armed Forces, Koperal Ahmad Hurairah bin Ismail and Koperal Ahmad Farhan bin Ruslan, who lost their lives in the line of duty in Lahad Datu. Chief Operating Officer, En. Mohamed Iqbal Abdul Rahman accepted the prestigious award on behalf of Pharmaniaga from Mr. Tan Sai Hup, Chief Operating Officer of Business Media International, the publisher of HR Asia. The Awards saw 220 companies competing to be selected as the best workplaces in Malaysia and Asia. Out of this, 40 companies from Malaysia made the list alongside Pharmaniaga. The Awards are based on a proprietary survey developed by HR Asia and encompass employees’ feedback and input, and management comments and presentation. In total, 6,000 Malaysian employees were surveyed to determine their intention and motivation, emotional engagement and advocacy of their respective employers. Boustead Telok Sengat’s Director, YBhg. Dato’ Shoib Abdullah signed the MoU on behalf of the company. The signing was witnessed by MIDA’s Deputy CEO, Manufacturing & Services Development (I), YBhg. Datuk Phang Ah Tong and The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC)'s CEO and Provost, Professor Christine Ennew. Going into the last quarter of the year, I encourage all Bousteadians to maintain their focus and determination to propel the Group forward. I am sure that with your combined efforts and contributions, we will be able to strengthen our prospects as we continue to grow. Tan Sri Dato' Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin The Awards cover 12 markets across Asia, with Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong being the first three respectively to hold the results announcement. En. The activity took place in Kuala Lumpur at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman on 17 July 2014. Group photo of the students from the Commonwealth countries at Kuala Selangor Nature Park C an we feed the growing world? The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Annual Summer School, held at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), posed this question to 36 students from 19 Commonwealth countries. The ACU, the world’s oldest university network, holds an annual summer residential school bringing together high calibre students from around the world to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. With over 700 applications, 36 students from a variety of disciplines, including social science, agriculture, bioscience and business, were selected to receive scholarships to travel to Malaysia in August 2014 to participate in this programme. UNMC was selected by the ACU as an ideal host for this event, especially due to the Crops for the Future Research Centre, a global research centre which focuses on food security, the diversity of food and approaches to food production in Malaysia. “Every aspect of the programme was focused on the issue of global food security, from the keynote talks on gender equality, climate change, food policy and safety, the site visits to the Crops for the Future Research Centre, the Kuala Selangor Homestay and the historic town Volunteers giving out meals of Malacca, to the meals themselves which showcased local approaches to sustainable food production and consumption," said UNMC’s Director of Research Training and Academic Development, Dr. Christopher Hill. The Summer School was an enormous success, as not only did it encourage and support student mobility, it provided key skill development opportunities, diverse and interesting site visits, as well as possible solutions to a very relevant global challenge for the modern world. It also provided a lifetime opportunity for students who have not had the opportunity to travel outside of their home countries. Pharmaniaga’s Managing Director, YBhg. Dato’ Farshila Emran, was also present at the event, personally handing over supermarket vouchers worth a total of RM2,500 to the poor. Dato' Farshila giving out cash vouchers for the homeless to buy their daily needs Besides food, SOS1M also distributed 40 packs of milk formula for babies of six months to three years old, demonstrating the high concentration of mothers and children trapped in poverty in the city centre. Used clothes, which were still in good condition were also given out. “It is truly heart-wrenching to see our own people, citizens of Malaysia who are deprived of healthy foods and luxuries,” she said. Last year, SOS1M ran its first and very own soup kitchen that also offered free health screenings at Masjid Jamek Kuala Lumpur in the month of Ramadan. This year SOS1M, comprising ten volunteers, supported the Need to Feed the Need soup kitchen team of eight volunteers. Approximately 300 individuals in need were able to benefit from this charitable initiative. “Urban poverty is real. In this month of giving, we are lucky to be in a position to offer some comfort and aid to those in need,” Dato’ Farshila said. 8 9 Group Communications Department’s 3D/2N Penang Escape (22 - 24 August 2014) T his year, we headed north to Penang Island for our teambuilding retreat. Our Penang Escape itinerary included a one-night cruise experience on the SuperStar Libra cruise ship, visits to fascinating places such as the Made in Penang Interactive Museum, Bukit Bendera (Penang Hill), Chowrasta Market and Gurney Drive, as well as a bowling competition. We stayed at The Royale Bintang Penang in Georgetown. It is the latest attraction in Penang, promoting the history of Penang, its iconic landmarks as well as historic figures via 3D wall and floor murals. We had a lot of fun making amusing poses and snapping photos with these amazing 3D art pieces. Unforgettable cruise experience In the evening, we proceeded to the Swettenham Pier for an overnight cruise experience on the SuperStar Libra cruise ship. Once on board, we roamed around the ship from deck to deck to check out what was interesting. We spent most of our time chilling out on the lazy chairs on the top deck, watching the starry sky, enjoying the fresh breeze and listening to the live band that belted Spectacular view of the city from the hill out a blend of both modern tunes and famous oldies, which we sung along with. It was wonderful to have time to relax and unwind. We spent the next couple of hours at the karaoke lounge before heading back to our rooms after midnight. RailBike TRAVEL TIPS Korea has four seasons, with a wet monsoon/summer in the middle of the year, and a cold winter from November to March. The island of Jeju off the southern coast is the warmest and wettest place in the country. The ideal time to visit Korea is during the autumn months (SeptemberNovember). During this time, the country experiences warm, sunny weather, skies that are cobalt blue and spectacular foliage that is perhaps the biggest draw. Winters are cold and dry and are a good time to visit if you are interested in winter sports as there are numerous ski resorts.
