and a new name. Mariano Perez told Hispanic News there will be new
programming, a mix of popular national programs and local focus that will
soon be a staple of the station.

“One of the important factors about the Day of the Dead is to not forget about the indigenous roots. When we
do the ceremony here at Guadalupe Center, our ceremony is done in English, Spanish and in Nahuatl, the Aztec

ay of the Dead celebrations are growing
nationally and across the Kansas City area.
The event falls on November 2 each year
coinciding with the Catholic holiday, All
Saints Day and All Souls Day.
The celebration can be traced to various indigenous
groups, such as the Aztecs and other pre-Hispanic
civilizations from as far back as 3,000 years ago. The
holiday is a blend of pre-Hispanic indigenous beliefs and
Spanish Catholic beliefs. Day of the Dead is a time for

transfer the assets of Cabot Westside
Medical and Dental Center located
on 2121 Summit Street, Kansas City,

this past Tuesday.

As the Valdivia family stood next to the altar they spoke about each family member
whose picture is proudly displayed. Although each picture has a special place in
Eddie’s heart, one picture in particular pulls harder on his heart. “The picture is
our grandbaby, he was with us for six days. God had other plans for him,” Eddie
Valdivia said.

i Mercado food store in Old Northeast neighborhood
started a new tradition this past Saturday, November 2.
Dia de los Muertos was celebrated with the famous El
Zapaton (Clown) plus there were freebies for the kids and a big food and meat sale for the adults.
According to Paul Davalos, store director, he told Hispanic News, “It’s a first for our food store to
celebrate the Day of the Dead,” Davalos added. This is meant for the families and community. We
have a great turn out with the children and parents. They are enjoying the outdoors activities.”

On First Friday in November, the Mattie Rhodes Art
Gallery continued their annual celebration of Dia de
los Muertos. Hundreds gathered to visit the gallery and
see firsthand the many altars built in memory of those
who have passed away over the years. There was food,
mariachi music, displays and paintings.

Eddie y su esposa Rosina
Valdivia, decidieron hace
dos años traer de nuevo la
tradición a su familia. Ellos
abrieron su casa a familiares y
amigos para celebrar la vida de
sus seres queridos, la semana
pasada.
Mientras
llegaron
las
personas, Eddie y Rosina
estuvieron en la mesa sirviendo
platillos tradicionales a cada
invitado.
Los integrantes de la familia
trabajaron por cerca de dos
semanas, para armar el gran
altar ubicado en la sala. La
mesa estaba llena de fotos y
artículos que eran favoritos
del difunto. Se encontraban
junto a una imagen, un
paquete de cigarrillos Lucky
Strike, servilletas de ganchillo,
dulces,
comida
favorita,
bebidas y pequeños juguetes.
En el Día de Muertos, la
familia se reunió para rezar
el rosario por los que han
fallecido.

Rosina decidió que quería
traer de regreso la tradición a
la familia. Es importante para
nuestros hijos y para recordar
a aquellos seres de nuestro
pasado. Muy a menudo nos
olvidamos de dónde venimos,
y cómo se enfrentaron a
batallas en sus vidas y cómo
ellos nos influenciaron”, dijo
David “Beaver” Valdivia.
Mientras Rosina Valdivia

Eddie Valdivia.
Han pasado casi una década
desde que el Dr. Uziel Pecina,
asistió por primera vez a una
ceremonia de Día de Muertos.
La última ceremonia a la que
asistió fue con su padre antes de
que él falleciera hace siete años.
Este año, la ceremonia del
Día de Muertos en Guadalupe
Center ocupaba un lugar
especial en su corazón.
“Mientras usted dice los
nombres de sus seres queridos,
pude recordar a mis abuelos
y a mi padre y honrarlos.
Yo no tengo un día especial
para recordar a mi padre, me
acuerdo de mi padre cada vez
que juego”, dijo Pecina.
La
celebración
puede
provocar diferentes emociones.
Para algunos, puede ser un día
de dolor o un día de alegría,
pero siempre es un día para
recordar a la persona que ha
muerto.
“Recordamos a los que han
fallecido, a los que no tienen
a nadie que los recuerde más.
Tan pronto como usted está
olvidado, ya no es recordado,
ya no existe. Realmente
creo en la transmisión de las
historias de sus antepasados “,
dijo Pecina.
Tradicionalmente,
las
conmemoraciones se han
celebrado en las casas de
las familias, pero en los
últimos años, las ceremonias
y tradiciones del Día de
Muertos, han sido realizados

In the days and weeks leading
up to the Day of the Dead,
people create and adorn altars
to honor their dead loved
ones. They take great care to
create altars and lay out gifts
or offerings next to their loved
ones pictures.
Offerings can include candles,
water, pan de muertos, marigolds,
a variety of foods and sweets,
drinks, photos of the deceased
members and personal items that
once belonged to them.

been working to teach students
about the meaning of Day of
the Dead since 1987.

people across the United States
are beginning to celebrate
the Day of the Dead. “The
broader community, the Anglo
community, is beginning to find
out about it and know about it.
It is a beautiful thing to maintain
this tradition,” he said.
Eddie and his wife Rosina
Valdivia decided two years ago
to bring the tradition back to
their family. They opened their
home to family and friends to
celebrate the life of their loved
ones last week.
As people arrived, Eddie and
Rosina set them at the table and
served each guest traditional foods.
Family members worked for
about two weeks to put together
the large altar displayed in the
living room. The table was filled
with pictures and items that were
the deceased’s favorite. Sitting
by one picture was a packet of
Lucky Strike cigarettes, crochet
doilies, candy, favorite food,
drinks and small toys.
On the Day of the Dead,
the family gathered to pray the
rosary for those who have passed
on. Aztec dancers performed
ceremonial dances around a
new picture of Our Lady of
Guadalupe as generations of the
Valdivia family watched. .
“The Day of the Dead is an old
tradition from Mexico but we
kind of lost the tradition. Our
family didn’t do it but we knew
some families still did. Rosina
decided she wanted to bring the
tradition back to the family. It
is important for our kids and to
remember those from our past.
So often we forget about where
we came from and how they
faced struggles in their lives and
how they influenced us,” said
David “Beaver” Valdivia.
As Rosina Valdivia cooked in
the home that has been in her
family for over 100 years, she
told Hispanic News that her dad
was an entertainer and loved to
throw parties.
“As I thought of him, I began
to think he would love this
and what better way to honor
his memory and celebrate my
mom and dad and have all my
family here. It is important to
remember our traditions and
I hope that our family will
continue this celebration each
year,” she said.
Eddie Valdivia stood next to the
altar and spoke about each family
member whose picture is proudly
displayed. Although each picture
has a special place in his heart,
one picture in particular pulls

God had other plans for him,”
he said.
The Valdivia’s want the
younger generations in their
family to hear the stories of
their great grandparents, their
grandparents and cousins and
aunts that have passed on.
“It is important to remember
our grandparents, parents, aunts
and uncles, cousins. This is our
way of honoring them. When
we go to the cemetery to visit
my parents, we take the stereo
and play Mexican music that
they love. We celebrate with
them,” said Eddie Valdivia.
It has been close to a decade
since Dr. Uzziel Pecina first
attended a Day of the Dead
ceremony. The last ceremony
he attended was with his father
before he passed away seven
years ago.
This year, the Day of the Dead
ceremony at the Guadalupe
Center held a special place in
his heart.
“As you call out the names
of your loved ones I was able
to remember my grandparents
and my dad and to honor him.
I do not use a special day to
remember my dad, I remember
my dad every time I play,” said
Pecina.
The celebration can elicit
varying emotions. For some, it can
be a day of sorrow or a day of joy,
but it is always a day to remember
the person that has died.
“We remember the ones that
passed, the ones that don’t
have anyone to remember
them anymore. As soon as
you are forgotten, no longer
remembered, you no longer
exist. I truly believe in passing
on the stories of your ancestors,”
said Pecina.
Traditionally
the
remembrances have been held
in family homes but in recent
years, the Day of the Dead
ceremonies and traditions have
been brought out to the public.
“Gilbert
(Guerrero)
is
one of my mentors. He is a
tremendous historian and he
always studied folkloric history
of Mexico. He thought it was
important to bring it to the
community and outside of our
homes,” said Pecina.
The play between life and
death is a key element of Day of
the Dead celebrations.
In Meso-American traditions,
skulls were collected and used
during rituals to symbolize
death and rebirth.
Today,
colorful skulls, made out of
glue and sugar, are acceptable
substitutes. The images of skulls
during the Day of the Dead
celebration can be found on the
altars and drawn on one side of
people’s faces.
“The face painting is a
tradition and we are poking fun
at death. We all know that we
are born and eventually death
will come to us,” he said.
According to Guerrero, the
death rate in Mexico is high and
death is scary in the Hispanic
culture. “The sugar skulls and
small toys that sit on the altars
were a way to teach the children
not to fear death. They are used
to help kids understand the
reality of life and death,” he said.

his past weekend,
as
parishioners
attended
mass
at Our Lady of
Guadalupe
Church
and
Sacred Heart Parish churches,
a statement was read on behalf
of Bishop Finn of the Diocese
of Kansas City – St. Joseph. It
read as follows:
“Dear Friends in Christ,
I regret that I must announce
to you I have removed Fr. Jorge
Ramirez as Administrator
of Sacred Heart-Guadalupe
Parish. My office has received
a variety of complaints
concerning Fr. Ramirez, which I
have considered serious enough
to merit removing him from his
priestly responsibilities at the
parish.
Fr. Ramirez is a priest of
the Diocese of Boise, Idaho
who has been on loan to the
Diocese of Kansas City – St.
Joseph for about five years. I
appointed him Administrator
of Sacred Heart-Guadalupe
in June of this year. He was
removed as Administrator
on October 31. I would like
to stress that none of the
complaints alleged against Fr.

For those in attendance,
listening to the statement was
shocking. Fr. Ramirez had
only been at the church for a
little over four months and in
that time had re-opened Our
Lady of Guadalupe Shrine,
an
iconic
neighborhood
institution that had been
shuttered when the parishes
were consolidated over twenty
years ago. Fr. Ramirez had
convinced Bishop Finn to
re-open and make Our Lady
of Guadalupe a church. An
agreement was reached to hold
a weekend mass on Saturday
at 4 p.m.
Once news got out that the
church had re-opened, people
started coming back to the
church. It was a few at first
but soon the church swelled to
over 75% of capacity. Families
that had moved away years
ago began re-embracing the
neighborhood weekend-mass
ritual that had been a part of
their youth. Now many are left
to wonder what will happen to
both churches and how soon
or whether another priest will
be assigned to them.

Para los asistentes, el
escuchar
la
declaración
fue impactante. El Padre
Ramírez sólo había estado
en la iglesia por un poco más
de cuatro meses, y en ese
tiempo se había vuelto a abrir
el Santuario de la Virgen de
Guadalupe, una institución
emblemática en el barrio y que
había sido clausurada cuando
las parroquias se consolidaron
hace más de veinte años.
El Padre Ramírez había
convencido al Obispo Finn
para volver a abrir y convertir
en Iglesia al Santuario de la
Virgen de Guadalupe. Se llegó
a un acuerdo para celebrar
una misa de fin de semana los
sábados a las 4:00 pm.
Una vez que se supo la
noticia de que la iglesia
se había vuelto a abrir, las
personas empezaron a llegar
de nuevo a la iglesia. Fueron
pocos al principio, pero
pronto la iglesia aumentó a
más del 75 % de capacidad.
Las familias que se habían
alejado hace años comenzaron
a volver a abrazar el ritual de
misa de fin de semana en el
barrio y que había sido parte
de su juventud. Ahora muchos
se preguntan ¿qué pasará con

Gutierrez identified the vision
of the new ownership. “We want

every family in this city. But most
of all, Multimedia Group wants
to unite all the groups out there
… to be one community. That is
why this is very important.”

with Hispanic News about the
appeal of the Kansas City market
to the investors.
“We were looking for some
type of investment. We saw the
opportunity to come to Kansas
City and to bring the innovation
that is found in a city like Los
Angeles CA. That is the risk we
are taking on,” he explained.
Perez also addressed the new
programming, a mix of popular
national programs and local
focus that will soon be a staple
of the station.
“We are bringing in national
shows like Don Cheto, which is
the most popular morning show
in the country,” explained Perez.
“Secondly, we have three DJs
to entertain the people who are
driving to work and help keep
them awake. “
Apart from the national
shows, the station is looking
to focus on local issues with an
interactive mindset.
“We have expectations that
the governor of Kansas and the
mayor of Kansas City, Kansas
will meet with us and dialogue
with the Hispanic community
and answer questions so that we
can address issues that people
have and set about resolving
them,” explained Perez.
According to Perez, the station
“will have special programming
that opens a dialogue with
the community over issues of
importance to the listeners. The
date has not been set on the
program schedule but it may
well be on the weekend, either
Saturday or Sunday. … We
want to be the intermediary so
that people will get closer to the
government.”
Perez added that the company
is planning to go to an FM
model by next month. “This will
be the first FM Latino station
in Kansas City. It will have
world-class technology. … We
are doing this because we see an
opportunity in the market.”
Perez added that the most
important effort that the
company is making in their
investment is the holistic
approach that they bring to the

me. I am from two places – from
Los Angeles and from Monterey
Mexico, but of Mexican parents
and I have two cultures. They
are blended. What I see here in
Kansas City is a separation and
we want to bring that together.
It is all business but we do want
to invite the community because
without them we are nothing.
… This is your radio station.
Welcome, and if we can help the
community in any way we are
here for that.”

identified said he voted yes because, “it was the
right thing to do.”
On election night Jim Fitzpatrick of the
Committee to Stop a bad Cure said, “the voters
of Jackson County took a really close look at the
issue… made an effort to learn the ins and outs
of the issue and made thoughtful decisions on
it rather than watching the TV ads. … We all
agree medical research is good. The question is
… how do you go about financing it?”

Pursuant to RSMo 99.825, and in accordance with RSMo 99.830, notice is hereby given

provide women’s health services,
immunizations and dental.
“The services they can
provide, and at a low cost to
the patient, was another reason
for transferring it to a FQHC
because they have the federal
government help to do that,”
said Cessor.
Cessor has served as the Cabot
director for the past decade and
told Hispanic News that this has
been the best time of her career.
While she is sad to walk away
from Cabot, she finds solace in
the fact that Cabot will continue
in very capable hands.
“Due to the economy, I
couldn’t have predicted if Cabot
would continue. I was scared
the losses would continue and
we would become such a burden
and we wouldn’t survive. This
way we will continue to survive
and the community wins,” said
Cessor.

When Fuentes first arrived in
Kansas City 17 years ago, she
was asked to serve on the Cabot
board of directors. During her
time on the board, she discussed
the need for fundraising for

director and began organizing
fundraising projects.
Her next career move was
with St. Luke’s Shawnee Mission
Health System where she
was named vice president of
Diversity Services.
“I made a loop working with
the different organizations and
now I am coming full circle. I
will be helping to lead Cabot
into the integration with Samuel
Rodgers,” Fuentes said.
The Samuel U. Rodgers Health
Center began in 1967 when Dr.
Samuel Rodgers planned and
then opened the first federally
recognized community health
center in Missouri. He had a
vision and a passion to ensure
that everyone had access to
quality health care.
Cabot was a member of Saint
Luke’s Health System since
1999. The system consists of
ten area hospitals and several
primary and specialty care
practices, and provides a range of
inpatient, outpatient, and home
care services. The mission of the
center is to commit to the highest
levels of excellence in health care
and the advancement of medical
research and education.
Cabot serves more than 7,800
patients through 19,000 visits
each year, with half of that
number being children. They
help fill the health care gap for
low-income patients and those
with little or no insurance.
The idea to merge the two
organizations
was
hatched
over a year ago when Fuentes
approached Cessor about the
possibilities.
It took them
a year to work through the
legal paperwork of getting
authorizations from the federal
government, working with each
respective board and signing
all the documents to make the
merger official.

In The Numbers
A
friend of mine told me
that when it comes
to figuring out why a
thing happens it is revealing to look at statistical measurements, if
any exist, to get an explanation for a certain outcome. Actually, no
friend of mine said that. Heck most of my friends try to change the
world as it is. They could care less about the minutiae that would
dictate they conform a specified worldview.
In fact, most of my friends that are sports fans or not, are relishing
this Chiefs’ record as a clear indicator of the fallibility of statistics
to give a clear view of anything. Absent any other measuring stick,
outside of wanting something so desperately that the collective
desire for a winning team in a long-starved fan base has finally found
the harmonic convergence to make it happen, I must tread onto the
numbers. Scientific inquiry demands it.
After all, fantasy football leagues exist because the numbers must
mean something. Or do the numbers mean nothing as they apply to
the actual game played and for that reason we have to create fantasy
teams to generate validity to the statistics? I am no Sherlock Holmes
and there is no indication that he would have loved the game, but
he would have been flummoxed by what is really at the root of this
confounding season that is the 2013 Chiefs.
Choose two things to consider as you look at the season. There are
the defensive numbers and the offensive numbers, and here we are
not talking about last years record.
The Chiefs have a pretty good defense that has been racking up
sacks and turnovers at record-setting numbers. Okay, there it is. That
works. Case solved. Good defense wins games. Elementary really.
Whoa. You say the defense has not done well even considering
their gaudy numbers? They have given up too many yards to back
up quarterbacks in the last three weeks. Wait till they face the elites
arms like Phillip Rivers, all-world Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck,
Terrelle Pryor and RGIII in the last seven games of the season.
Shiver me timbers, this could really be a bad thing coming up –
almost Armageddon like. The team has scored more points than last
year but how about their opponents?
That looks like a mixed bag. The Chiefs are ranked 12th in
points scored and have scored one more point than the Luck-led
Indianapolis Colts. They have scored 23 more points than the Rivers
led San Diego Chargers. They have scored 12 more points than the
RGIII led team from Washington DC. They have scored 69 more
points than the Pryor-led Oakland Raiders. Who by the way have
scored the same amount of points the Chiefs did at this time last year.
Okay the bad news; the Broncos have scored 343 points. Okay,
that means the Chiefs will lose two games against the Broncos. Darn
it! There goes that perfect season. Okay, I will take 14-2 as a great
season.
Wait a minute. The Cowboys have scored 257 points. That is 52
more than the Chiefs, but we beat the Cowboys. Or did we? The
Eagles have scored ten more points that the Chiefs? But we beat the
Eagles, or did we?
And now you want me to think about the makeup of the offense
and how the defense is starting to look weak, especially in the
secondary and how the whole team is winning with luck and luck
will eventually run out (But he plays for the Colts and they have
had some really good Luck). Just look at the numbers. This is not
physics folks
Darn it, this was starting to make sense to me. The Chiefs stand
9-0 compared to last year at this time when they were 1-8. Okay, I
see something here. They won 8 more games than last year. You win
more games you have a better record.
Okay, they have scored 215 points compared to 146 last year. Well
there it is, the offense is kicking butt! Oh, yeah. Wait a minute. The
defense has scored five touchdowns? But you said you did not trust
the defense going forward to match up against those elite arms.
You know what? I like my numbers more. The offense has scored
more points. If you score more points, you win more games. If you
win more games you have a better record. This is pretty easy really.
The why of it? I could care less. Leave it to scientists to figure out.
They are still trying to work out that Unified Theory of Everything.
On second thought, you throw in this Chiefs’ season into their
equations and it is likely to set their progress back centuries. Leave
it alone. Go Chiefs.
