Dear Friends
I am very proud to introduce to you the Olive Wood
Art which will be on display at St. Mark next
weekend, June 11th & 12th. This collection comes to
you directly from Bethlehem and contains the best
religious figurines from the Holy Land.
The tradition of Olive wood carving in the Holy Land
has been handed down from father to son since the
12th century. Originally introduced by the Crusaders,
the craft has been perfected by centuries of local
master carvers. My designs are brought to you by
workmanship of over 85 Families. The carving wood
comes from the olive trees that are over 700 years old,
which have a unique beauty, and quality that is not
found in other wood.
The olive tree is chosen for more than its appearance.
It has a history of religious significance with many
references in Bible. Proverbs refer to olive and its
reputed power as “ tree of life to them that grasp it,
and to them that would uphold it, everyone is rendered
happy.” Also, Olive woods were used to make the
cross of Jesus Christ. God promised afterward that the
olive trees would be a symbol of peace and beauty for
the world. The RISHMAWI family is one of
Bethlehem’s oldest Christian Families and we are
proud to continue the olive wood Carving Tradition.
Thanks you for your Support
Sincerely, Rida Rishmawi

Pope Francis has announced this extraordinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy, to
highlight the Catholic Church's "mission to
be a witness of mercy." Today we pray...
...for the Sick and Disabled
Jesus our Lord,
We ask you to have mercy on all who are sick
and disabled.
Give them your strength and love,
And help them to carry this cross with faith.
May their sufferings be one with yours,
Overcome the power of evil, and lead others to
our Father in heaven.
Lord Jesus, hear our prayer,
For you are Lord for ever and ever.
Amen

and Family, published by the CCCB)

Today’s Readings
First Reading — The LORD forgives David for
taking the wife of Uriah, and for having Uriah killed
(2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13).
Psalm — Lord, forgive the wrong I have done
(Psalm 32).
Second Reading — If justification comes through
the law, then Christ died for nothing (Galatians 2:16, 19-21).
Gospel — Jesus forgives the woman because of her
great love (Luke 7:36 — 8:3 [7:36-50]).

HOPE AND FORGIVENESS
There were some interesting
conceptions of sin prevalent in the
time of the Hebrew scriptures. There
was the belief that God punished sin
immediately. Those who suffered
disease or misfortune were, therefore,
sinners getting their due from the Almighty.
Today’s first reading hints at another kind of
God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares,
“The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin” (2
Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a
merciful God. What good news that must have been
to David and those who, like him, could be honest
enough to admit their sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and
forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the
good news would have been too good to believe, too
difficult to imagine. But there he is in today’s
Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and
declaring that she is forgiven because of her great
love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners,
if only we love enough! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
