1st Sunday in Lent
February 22, 2015
• Welcome, guests! If our form of worship seems unfamiliar, that’s okay.
If it feels like you’re joining a conversation already in progress, you are!
In a way the family of God has been visiting with him for centuries and
the style of conversation has developed over time. But after a short
time of listening and observing, you’ll find yourself caught up and participating in this long-felt joy of conversation between God and his
dearly loved people.
What’s next?
If you’re just getting back to church or looking for a new church, let this be your road
map on the journey.
→ Come back next week. The connection between yourself and Christ gets closer
and stronger with more listening to his word, the Bible. And the connection with
his people grows also as we experience his truth and love together, extending his
peace in our relationships.

a good relationship with God. If you know anything from the Bible, know these
four keys! Then the rest of the Bible starts to open up for you.

Bible’s basic teachings while letting you see how other religions and denominations, including ours, handle those teachings. You get to see the Bible’s own word
on these topics and let God’s Spirit show you what the Bible says. This is a prerequisite for membership here because we base membership not on feelings and
style but on unity in God’s precious truths.

Basketball Update: Congratulations to the St.
John's basketball team for competing in eight
games in three days and winning six of them! On
Thursday, February 12th the Warriors traveled to
St. Paul's, Arlington for a doubleheader. St. John's
faced Arlington in the first game and lost 25-36.
Matthew Beussman lead the Warriors with 13
points. St. John's then played Immanuel,
Hutchinson in their second game and won 25 to 21.
Matthew Beussman had 12 points and Yuri Soloviyov had 10 points. The St. John's basketball team
then traveled to Hutchinson for a tournament on
Saturday, February 14. The team played three pool
games and won their first against St. Paul's, St.
James 10 to 5. Matthew Beussman lead the team
with 4 points. The Warriors then played in their
second pool game and beat St. Paul's, Arlington 24
to 13. Matthew Beussman again lead the team with
8 points, Molly Landkammer with 6 points, and Yuri
Soloviyov with 6 points. The Warriors then defeated St. Johns, Redwood Falls 20 to 14. Matthew
Beussman lead the team with 10 points. The Warriors finished 3-0 in their pool play and took the 1st
seed in the bracket. In their first bracket round the
Warriors beat Immanuel, Gaylord 27 to 20.
Matthew Beussman led the team with 13 points
and Yuri Soloviyov with 12 points. St. John's again
played St. Paul's, Arlington and won in overtime 27
to 25 in an exciting game that moved them into the
championship game of the tournament. Matthew
led the team with 10 points and Molly Landkammer had 6 points. In their sixth game of the day the
Warriors lost in the championship game 12 to 21 to
Immanuel, Hutchinson. Matthew Beussman led the
team with 12 points. The Warriors ended their
tournament with a 5-1 record and a 2nd place fin-
ish. The current record for the Warriors is 16-8.
The Warriors have a week break and then will
play in another tournament at Martin Luther
College with their first game at 4:30 on Friday,
February 27th.

During season of Lent, we want to make use of older children from our school to help out with ushering. It is a fun way to get them involved in service to
our Lord. Watch for them and encourage them in
serving him.

Part-time Office Position: St. John’s is currently accepting applications through February 27th for a part
-time office position for approx. 12 hrs. weekly. The
position will mainly consist of bookkeeping with
knowledge of Quickbooks and Microsoft office being
helpful. This person’s duties will require them to be
in the office two days a week. Those wishing to apply
should fill out an application. Applications can be
found in the office. Questions can be directed to Jim
Mielke or Lisa Hillmann.
Sewing Project Day February 28th! Everyone is welcome to participate in sewing baby items for New
Beginnings Home. We will start at 9 am in the church
basement. Bring: sewing machines, notions and
threads, ribbon pieces, and a sharp scissors if you
have them. We will have jobs for everyone - even if
you don’t sew! Also, if you are willing to launder
some of the purchased fabric ahead of time, please
contact Rachel Cordes. Sign up in the narthex if you
are able to bring a salad for the day. This project is
made possible financially through a Thrivent Action
Team grant!

Camp Shetek will be held June 13-19th this year.
Camp is for all children Grade 3 - 8 to enjoy wholesome activities in an outdoor setting. There is time
for Bible Study, Worship, games, swimming, fishing,
biking and singing. You may pay IN FULL or the pay
the DEPOSIT amount when you register. The Regular Registration cost of $ 225 per person will apply
for all registrations received after April 1st. No reservations will be accepted after May 15th. Names
that are received after May 15th will be contacted if
we have space. PLEASE NOTE: A second or third
child from the same family WILL RECEIVE A $ 20 discount. Financial Assistance is available through generous supporters of Camp Shetek. Please explain

Dear St. John’s Church Family,
I have received an email notification the funds from
St. John’s will go towards my MLC tuition. Thank you
for contributing to my education. I appreciate the
help to pay for school!
I am double majoring in early childhood and elementary education, and am always studying hard. I
am looking forward to my first early field experience, in March, where I will be teaching reading to
third through fifth graders.
• For Parents: If your child is restless during the service, please use the lobby or lower level
to quiet him/her down, so you can rejoin the assembly in worship. A TV monitor is on in
the lower level so you don’t have to miss much while your child gets calm. Children’s
worship bags are available for small children during the service. Find them next to the
upper elevator door.
• Offerings: Our offerings make it possible to run the programs and ministries of our church,
participating with the Lord our God in his kingdom plans and expansion. Each member is
taught to make his own decision what to give, based on the simple principles of giving
first to God, generously and with a heart of trust. If you are a guest, you are not expected to participate in the Offering. We’re just glad you can be here and listen to God’s
Word with us!
• There are resources for you and your family to discover on the display tables in the Narthex
(lobby). Take home some helpful tools and news – free!
• Sunday School is a HUGE blessing for all ages at St. John’s, because it’s like power-learning
and sibling fun all in one! Children can stay right in the sanctuary where we worship,
moving to the front where the piano is for some fun songs to start Adults and teens can
head downstairs where the fun begins in a topic focused on growing your lifestyle and
character.

Portraits of Christ to Remember
This Wednesday we began the season of “Lent”. During the next six weeks we turn our
hearts to the story of Jesus’ humility. We watch him go deeper and deeper into willing
humiliation, because that was the only way he could save us from our sins. So, while we
marvel at his sufferings, we also take the time necessary to repent of all sins, turning
from them and to him for the package of forgiveness and life he came to win for us. As
the days “lengthen” (the word “Lent” comes from this word) toward springtime, so our
hope increases as Christ’s crucifixion nears.

What happens after the seminar?
Following this introductory Phase 1 seminar – if we decide to proceed with the proposed ministry planning process – we'll continue with Phase 2 (Analysis), Phase 3 (Mission/Vision
Setting), and Phase 4 (Strategic Implementation).
Crossroads Consulting strongly recommends a proactive, consensus-building approach to ministry planning, not the unhealthy and unadventurous head-in-the-sand approach. Let’s see
